October 12, 2014 HPMF Scripture: Exodus 3 Title: Theophany NARRATOR: Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. 3 Moses: I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up. NARRATOR: 4 When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, I AM: Moses, Moses! Moses: Here I am. 5 I AM: Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. 6 I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. NARRATOR: And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Then the LORD said I AM: I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites and the Jebusites. 9 The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. 10 So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt. 11 Moses: Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? 12 I AM: I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain. Moses : If I come to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your ancestors has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name? what shall I say to them? I AM: I AM WHO I AM. Thus you shall say to the Israelites, I AM has sent me to you. Thus you shall say to the Israelites, The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you : This is my name for ever, and this my title for all generations. 18 They will listen to your voice; and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; let us now go a three days journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. 19 I know, however, that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand. 20 So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders that I will perform in it; after that he will let you go.

To help us inhabit this story, I wanted to start with a few paintings of the burning bush experience paintings that try to capture a bit this encounter that Moses has with God. Professor and author Avivah Zornberg points out that this whole Exodus story, of God leading the people out of Egypt, through the Red Sea to the mountain of the Lord, the giving of the Ten Commandments and so on and so on this whole story begins because a shepherd in Midian (not Meridian let s not get too Idaho-centric) sees something unusual and decides to go and explore it closer. This shepherd is going about his daily tasks and sees something which raises his curiosity, he sees something that causes him to pause and deviate from his regular routine. Moses turns

aside from his straight path, from his primary concerns and routine, simply to notice an anomaly in the world and to look for meaning in it (Zornberg). And this is how it all begins. This whole story grand story of liberation begins because a shepherd looks up and takes notice of something out of place. God does not speak to Moses until Moses breaks from his routine, until Moses steps aside to explore to see what this might be. God does not call out to Moses, the angel does not speak, until Moses comes to see what is happening in this world anomaly. And then Moses has what is called a theophany, an experience of God where God appears to humanity in a tangible form a form that is experienced by the human sense an encounter with the Divine. And this, I think is what many of us long for, or at least what we think we long for. The simplicity of God showing up in some anomaly and letting us know what God s exact plan is for us and our lives to give us a full and clear sense of direction. But, of course, it could be that God is appearing to us all the time and that we are just not willing to diverge from our current path we are not looking up enough to notice, or we are not willing to stray from the day-to-day tasks that we have filled our lives with. It could be that God is regularly placing anomalies into our lives but we are just not paying attention. It could be in something that disturbs us- like a story we read in the news or seeing a group of homeless people living under a bridge; it could be in unusual beauty, in the taste of a strawberry or the view from a mountain top. Perhaps if we were able to step aside in more of these moments we might hear God calling to us, Moses, Moses.

When Moses does have this theophany, this encounter causes him to ask two of life s most important questions: Who am I? Who is God? Who am I, and Who is God? These are the questions of life, and certainly the questions we must ask when we encounter the Divine. Moses first question, Who am I? plays out in his great resistance to God s calling for his life. This part of the story captures just a bit of Moses resistance, it continues well into the fourth chapter of Exodus where Moses asks God, but suppose they do not believe me or listen to me? And to this God performs a few mini-miracles to help inspire Moses (I have to admit that I forgot this part of the story) first he turns Moses shepherd s crux into a snake. Next, God tells Moses to put his hand inside his cloak, and when he takes it out it is leprous, as white as snow says the Bible. Then when he puts his hand back, his hand returns to normal. And to these little miracles Moses answers, but God, I am not a good speaker I am no politician I don t think well on my feet and I am no public speaker. Apparently the true translation from the Hebrew here is that Moses says he has a heavy tongue which may mean he has a stutter of some type, or may just mean that like so many people he is deathly afraid of public speaking. Whatever the case, Moses response to witnessing God s power is, I have a heavy tongue. To this God answers, I will be with you. I will be with your mouth and teach you what you are to say. And then, Moses finally gets down to the truth that he is scared and just plain does not want to go. After God promises to help him get over his fear of public speaking Moses pleads, O my Lord, please send someone else. This is a direct quote, this is not a paraphrase, O my Lord, please send someone else. At this point I imagine that Moses is really wishing he would have stayed on that strait path, that he would not have left his sheep to go and see what was happening with this weird bush. Some Jewish rabbis speculate that this negotiation between

Moses and God took a week 7 days of Moses trying to convince God that he is not the man for the job. And so, Who am I? Someone not fit for the task Moses has just finally settled down in his life, remember he had just fled Egypt as a refugee his life was in chaos for a long time and now it is finally settling down things are finally going well for him. Moses has just gotten married to a lovely woman named Zipporah and they have just had their first child, a son. He has a good job, he is a shepherd working for his father-in-law. This could well be the first time Moses has really felt at home his entire life. And in the midst of this, God calls and asks him to go and speak to the most powerful human on the planet. Just when he is feeling at home and comfortable, God comes and interrupts this good thing he has going and says, go and work for the liberation of my people. This morning I was wondering what I would do if God showed up to me in a burning bush and told me to go down to Puerto Assis and talk to the Drug Lord s and leaders of the Guerilla armies. Just having gotten married and bought a house finally feeling settled for maybe the first time in my adult life would I be willing to go and put my life on the line? I think it is more likely I would say, But I don t even speak Spanish! And after God said, I will teach you Spanish, I will send you with an amazing translator, I am pretty sure my answer would be, O my Lord, please send Rob & Annette. Who am I? I am not up to the task, I am someone who is settled in my life But this is not all of who Moses is, not all the makes up his resistance to God s call t return to Egypt. Moses is also someone with a past that he is not proud of. As we read the story, we of course think that Moses is the perfect person, the logical person: he knows the Hebrew world and the Egyptian world, he grew up in Pharaoh s palace he certainly speaks Egyptian, he has insight into the world of Pharaoh. That is what we see, what we remember. But I imagine

what Moses remembers and recalls when he thinks of Egypt is quite different, I imagine that he remembers the pain and regret of his past. He remembers that he tried to help once before he tried to help the Hebrews before when he saw a slave being beaten and it was not wanted. So, who am I, they do not want my help. And he remembers that he committed a terrible act, he killed a man, one of the most terrible acts that one can commit an act that can never be undone. And going back to Egypt means that whatever feelings and shame he has from that moment in his life will come flooding back whatever he has buried from that experience will return to the surface. So, who am I? I am not worthy of such a task. But of course, we know that God seems to utilize some of the greatest pains of our life in the service of others, in the service of God s mission. It is often former drug-addicts who make the best drug-counselors; it is often those who have been to prison that are the most effective in working with those currently in prison; former gang members who can best relate to those trying to get out of gangs; it is often someone who has experienced a similar tragedy to us that we seek out when we encounter that same tragedy; those who have been through divorce that help us navigate our own marital struggles; those who have been through a similar experience who often most feel like they can understand the pain that we are going through. I think this is the grace of God that if we are willing, God might call our area of pain into service for the world. This seems to be the case with Moses that God calls him, not in spite of his past, but at least in part, because of his past. It is not a story that goes, even though you have done terrible things, God can still use you for good. Rather, it is a story that reads, because of this great pain you have gone through in Egypt, because you have experienced that rare pain I am going to ask you to help lead others out of that same pain.

Of course, it takes awhile to get to that point it takes time. Moses does not flee Egypt as a refugee and run right into a burning bush at the border of Egypt. He needs time to heal first. He needs Jethro, Zipporah, and time out in the fields with the sheep to heal - he needs time for his wound to become a scare. After much time and healing, this is when he notices the burning bush. Who knows, maybe that bush had been burning for ten years maybe Moses had passed by that spot 100 times, but it was not until he was ready to see it that he noticed it not until he had healed enough that he was able to see beyond his own pain and notice that anomaly in the world. And so, Who am I? One not qualified, one who is settled, and one with a past. These are the answers that Moses tries to use to resist God s great calling for his life. And then the second question, Who is God? Moses asks God to reveal God s name, to which God answers, I Am who I Am. This is one of the most debated translations in the Old Testament, what is it that God is saying here? God seems to be saying, I can not be boxed in, you can not tame me or know me just by one word, one name, one theology book, one denomination. I am vast and mysterious. And, at the same time, here I am, talking with you. Many Hebrew translators argue that the best translation here is, I will be who I will be. Which means, I think, that what God is actually saying is that you can t really know who God is nless you re willing to sign on for God s mission in the world. God is telling Moses that if he really wants to know who this God is that is speaking with him, he can only know if he is willing to join God in Her great mission of liberation in the world. We cannot know God in just one encounter, but only after a life of loving service. So, who are we? A broken and fearful people that God calls forth out of fear, and out of our own brokenness.

And who is God? A great mystery who is only fully known when we walk with Him, joining in the great mission of bringing love and wholeness to all the living things of this world And I have to close with this, with the sign that God gives to Moses. In verse 12 God says, I will be with you. And then God promises a Moses a sign, and here is the sign I just love this God says, and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain. That is the sign that God offers this very fearful Moses, that after he leads the people out of Egypt, after the task is over and done, then they will worship God on the mountain. This is only sign offered, that after Moses has done what God asks, after the task is accomplished, then he will look back and see that God was with him. That is the sign promised. And I think that is the truth that the only promise we get is that God will be with us, and that at the end, after we have stepped out with God after we have joined with God in Her mission when we are looking back we will see the places where God was with us where we met God in others, where we see that we gained wisdom and strength that was not there before, when we remember that time when we did not know what to say and God gave us the words; when the money showed up just when we needed it; when the right person walked through the door just at the right time; when we stopped to have a conversation with someone for what at the time seemed like no good reason at all. Yes, it is usually only after we have journeyed quite a long way that we are able to look back and see where God was at work. This is life in the loving service to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel, the God of Mary Magdalene and Sojourner Truth, the God

of Saint Frances and Anne Frank, the God of Dirk Willams, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The God of Levi, and Zach, and McKayla the God of Hyde Park, Emmaus, and Evergreen. This is the God who calls us forth into service, that healing and hope might flow through us and into the world. Amen. Sending Blessing And now as you go from this place, may the God who sees go with you opening our eyes to the places we are being called off of our paths, and giving us the courage to follow that call that healing and hope might flow through us and into the world. Amen.

Intergenerational In our story today Moses meets God in a bush that is on fire, but it never burns up. He is watching his sheep and he sees this bush it is strange so he goes to explore. And there, in that odd bush, Moses meets God. And Moses asks God what God s name is, and you know what God tells him? God says that his name is, I AM who I AM? That is sort of an odd name, don t you think, I AM who I AM? I think that God is telling us that God is so big, we can t really describe God with just one name we can t explain or understand God with just one name. In the Old Testament there are a lot of names that are used for God. They don t always just say God, but they use a lot of different names to try and describe different parts of God and who God is. Here are a few [SLIDES]. 1. Adonai master, the one in charge 2. El Shaddi mighty God of the mountains; can handle our problems 3. El Roi God who sees us, can see all 4. Elohim All powerful; creator of the universe 5. Immanuel God is with us; friend or companion - constant 6. Jehovah-Rapha God heals 7. Jehovah-Rohi The Lord is my shepherd; God leads and provides These are just some names of God, people trying to describe parts of who God is. But, this is not all are there other names that might help describe God? Can you think of any? -Friend -Mother, Father -Listener -Sculpture -Jesus parent (dad) -Artist -Musician -Builder Let s Pray before we go back
