1 February 2018 Friends Coffee Morning: Friday 2 nd February at 4, Canon Lane. 10am - 12 noon. Coffee and a biscuit. 2 entry. Open to all - bring a friend! Be Still: The Chichester Contemplative Prayer Group, that explores silent prayer in the Christian tradition, is now meeting twice a month with its next meetings on Tuesdays 6 th and 20 th February (7.15pm for 7.30pm start, finishing 8.45pm) in 4, Canon Lane. Each evening stands alone, so come when you can for guidance on how to pray silently; ways to help anchor your mind; relaxation, through music and gentle breathing; two twenty minute periods of silence; a move from head to heart. Friends Book at Breakfast with the Chancellor: The Forgiveness Project by Marina Cantacuzino (available in the Cathedral shop.) Thursday 8 th February at 9am, at 4, Canon Lane. Tickets cost 7 and include a continental breakfast. All welcome. The Sixteen in Concert: Thursday 8 th February at 7.30pm. The programme includes Vivaldi s Gloria in D major RV one of sacred music s most uplifting choral works and a joyful hymn of praise with moments ranging from festive brilliance to profound sadness. Composed in Venice, probably in 1715, for the choir of the Ospedale della Pietà, its wonderfully sunny nature and distinctive melodies and rhythms gives it an immediate and universal appeal. Tickets ( 15-30) available from You may be interested to learn that singing as a member of the choir is Joshua Cooter, former Head Chorister at Chichester under Alan Thurlow! Friends Visit to West Sussex Record Office. Meet at the County Record Office at 2.15pm, Monday 12 th February. Tickets 4. Numbers are limited. Book early!

For this first talk we will be exploring the concept of forgiveness and are honoured to be welcoming Kemal Pervanic, a survivor of the notorious Omarska concentration camp, set up by Bosnian Serb forces in the early days of the Bosnian War. Kemal now lives in England and is the founder of the transformative Most Mira charity. Booking in advance is essential - book tickets via Cathedral s What s On web page and go to Talks or book in person or by phone from The Novium Museum, Tower Street, Chichester: (Refreshments included.). Kemal s story is shared as part of The Forgiveness Project. William Blake: Radical Prophet : Thursday 22 nd February 6.30pm in the Nave. A Chichester Theological Society Lecture by Professor Christopher Rowland, Emeritus Dean Ireland s Professor of Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford. Free entry, all welcome. This illustrated lecture relates to a new book by Professor Christopher Rowland called: Radical Prophet: The Mystics, Subversives and Visionaries who Strove for Heaven on Earth. In this book Rowland explores the fact that Christianity began with the conviction that the old order was finished. The mysterious, elusive and charismatic figure of Jesus proclaimed that a new era, the Kingdom of God, was dawning. Yet despite its success, and the conversion of the empire which had executed its founder, the religion he inspired was soon domesticated, its countercultural radicalism tamed, as the Church attempted to control both its doctrines and its followers. Christopher Rowland shows that this was never the whole story, and in this lecture he will focus on the extraordinary figure of William Blake. Blake may be best known for the words to the hymn Jerusalem, but he was hardly an establishment figure - as indicated by his trial for sedition in the Assizes court at Chichester in Join us to find out more.

6 Cathedral News & Notices CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL CHAPTER SUMMARY - JANUARY 2018 Chapter discussed the Carlile Review and its implications, ahead of the meeting of the Chichester Cathedral Council later in the week, where the Review would also be considered and advice offered to Chapter. Following a meeting of Chapter s property committee, the Cathedral s property portfolio was discussed further, and investment options were considered. Chapter reviewed the Cathedral s management accounts for the first three quarters of the year, noting that they were running overall at around the budgeted figure. It was agreed to begin preparations for the second phase of the Cathedral s reroofing the South Transept. It was also agreed to progress a trial of contactless payment units to encourage donations from Cathedral visitors. The College of Canons meetings for 2018 and 2019 were planned. The recent report by the Minister for Faiths, Lord Bourne, for the Government s Department for Communities and Local Government was welcomed. CATHEDRALS WORKING GROUP REPORT The draft report by the Cathedral s Working Group was published on Thursday 18 th January. It is available on the Church of England Website. ROOF PROJECT The re-roofing project is under way with access scaffold to quire and side aisle roofs progressing quickly. Once complete it will be fully enclosed with a shrink wrap that will allow works to progress inside a weather protected space, starting the first week of March. The contractors are currently also addressing ground conditions that have seen the site entrance become excessively muddy over recent weeks. They are installing additional material and road plates and road plates, and will reinstate turf later in the project. In the meantime, the area is being monitored daily.

7 ECO CHURCH Following our application to the A Rocha Eco Church award scheme (arocha.org.uk), we are delighted to announce that Chichester Cathedral has achieved their Bronze award standard and is now an Eco Church. We look forward to receiving the official plaque and certificate which will be placed on display. USPG The Spring 2018 Transmission from USPG has been received and copies of it and the USPG Prayer Diary (11 th February - 9 th June) are now available at the west end of the Cathedral. Please help yourself to a copy. CHICHESTER FOODBANK NEWS For the first time we are beginning to use all the food donated each month and have had to cut back on what we can put into our food parcels. As you all know poverty is becoming the experience of many families, even in Chichester. In the last six months use of the foodbank service has increased due to benefit changes but also people in work cannot manage on low wages and cannot feed their children. Could the Cathedral congregation, who already give tremendous support, increase donations of food and put it into the basket at the West Door or in the Cathedral office? Our immediate needs are: Smash; tinned meat; jam; UHT milk. We would also appreciate toiletries for the many homeless people we see. Thank you very much. (Maggie Saffery) The copy deadline for the March leaflet is 11 th February. Please send entries to Charlotte Rattray by to lmassistant@chichestercathedral.org.uk Thank you.
