2 M O R N I N G W O R S H I P 9 : 0 0 / 1 1 : 0 0 A M Prelude Silent Night Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and Child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace. We Three Kings We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to Thy perfect light. Call to Worship F. Gruber/arr. J. Strong arr. J. Strong Helen Sneller, clarinet * Doxology (Hymn 731) Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Confession Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy upon us. And grant, O most merciful Father, for Jesus sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and joyful life, to the glory of Your Name. Amen. * Invocation * Hymn 226: As with Gladness Men of Old Dix Responsive Reading Psalm 69:19 36 (page 483) * Gloria Patri (Hymn 734) Gloria Patri (Meineke) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. * Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Thou who art God beyond all praising, All for love s sake becamest man; Stooping so low, but sinners raising Heavenwards by Thine eternal plan. Thou who art God beyond all praising, All for love s sake becamest man. Thou who art love beyond all telling, Savior and King, we worship Thee. 4 E V E N I N G W O R S H I P 6 : 3 0 P M Soli Deo Gloria: Prelude at 6:15 PM Away in a Manger arr. G. Schuster Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; the stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. Good Christian Men, Rejoice! arr. G. Schuster Good Christian men, rejoice, with heart and soul and voice; give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today; earth and heav n before Him bow, and He is in the manger now. Christ is born today! Christ is born today! Sarah Seaman, flute Danielle Seaman, violin Judy Seaman, clarinet Sonata in E Minor, KV 304 I. Allegro II. Tempo di Minuetto W. A. Mozart Danielle Seaman, violin Sarah Seaman, piano Soli Deo Gloria is a motto that has been used since the time of the Protestant Reformation. It is the culminating phrase of five Solas and means Glory to God Alone. Recognizing that all glory belongs to God and that we, even at our best, are but instruments of His grace, is the true, Christian world-life view. Such was the perspective of the great church musician Johann Sebastian Bach ( ), who regularly began his compositional work, whether sacred or secular, by writing JJ (Jesu, juva Jesus, help me ) on the first page of a manuscript and sdg at the end. Since 1995 we have employed this phrase as the title of our fifteen-minute musical prelude to evening worship. SDG affords musicians (singers and instrumentalists alike) the opportunity to give back to God from the gifts He has given them. At the same time, the music is intended to encourage the congregation and to be a public testimony of our desire as musicians to honor Him with our musical offerings. This even extends past vocal music with sacred text to the untexted beauty of instrumental music, which can also be offered to the glory of God. Through the doctrine of common grace, such music demonstrates for us not only the skill of the player, but also the creative genius with which God has endowed so many composers, whether or not they were conscious of this gift or were intentional in their use of it for His glory. Welcome Call to Worship Invocation * Hymn 215: While by the Sheep We Watched at Night Jungst * Hymn 227: On Christmas Night All Christians Sing Sussex Carol * Congregation standing

5 * Prayer of Confession (in unison) O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hands. Forgive us, Lord, for how we have corrupted Your good creation. Gracious Lord, You alone are righteous and holy, and in Your presence no one can stand. Your gracious mercy is our only hope and we ask for Your forgiveness. We pray for Your cleansing touch to wash away our corruption, and to clothe us in the righteousness that may only be found by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, in Whose holy name we pray. Amen. * The Gospel s Assurance of Pardon Romans 5:8 10 ESV God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. * Doxology (Hymn 733) Lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below: alleluia, alleluia! Praise Him above ye heav nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Prayer of Preparation God s Word Read Psalm 138:1 8 (page 521) * Hymn 228: Saw You Never, in the Twilight Chartres * Offering Prayer Offertory: Thou Who Wast Rich beyond All Splendor arr. T. Thou who wast rich beyond all splendor, all for love s sake becamest poor. 6 P R O J E C T O F T H E M O N T H Jump-start 2014 global partners: God is calling several families closely connected to Tenth to work with unengaged or least-reached people groups. We have a unique opportunity to come alongside them and help them get to the field. One will go to South Asia, one to Japan, one to the Middle East, and one to Ethiopia. Becoming a global partner means incurring a mountain of start-up expenses. These families are stepping out in faith; we can partner with them and speed their departure by helping with these costs. Cash or checks made out to Tenth (designated Project of the Month on the memo line) may be placed in offering plates or one of the oak boxes at the Sanctuary entrances.

8 TENTH PRESS DECEMBER 29, 2013 WATCH NIGHT by Rev. Marion Clark, Executive Minister What are you doing for New Year s Eve? Have you considered spending the last night of the year in church? The New Year s Eve Watch Night Service is a long tradition at Tenth, and a rare one in the Philadelphia area. It may have borrowed from the tradition of our African-American sister churches, which began on the eve of 1863, when the Emancipation Proclamation was to take effect. Charles Spurgeon held a watch night service at the end of He writes: If it be enquired why I held a Watchnight, let the answer be because I hoped that the Lord would own the service, and thus souls might be saved. I have preached at all hours the gospel of Jesus, and I see no reason why I may not preach at midnight, if I can obtain hearers. He sounds a bit like Liam Goligher. Perhaps Presbyterians borrowed from the Methodists. John Wesley started watch night services one hundred years earlier in They would also be called Covenant Renewal services. The custom of holding a watch night service on New Year s Eve was started in America by St. George s Methodist Church in Philadelphia in I don t know when or how it started at Tenth. It at least goes back to the Donald Grey Barnhouse years, so that would take it at least to the 50 s and most likely earlier. The earliest year of bulletins I can consult is from fortyfive years ago in 1968, the first year of James Boice s tenure. Sunday fell on December 29 that year. Listed in the bulletin is an announcement that the Watch Night Service will be one of joyful thanksgiving for our Lord s faithfulness to us throughout the year. The service began at 9:30 with a reception at 10:30, then followed by a communion service. The announcement adds: There is no better way for a Christian to end the Old Year and start the New Year than to praise and worship God in fellowship with others. What does a watch night service at Tenth look like? From 9:00 to 10:30 is the testimony and hymn singing portion. We sing a couple of hymns and then people go up to microphones in the aisles and share what the Lord has done in their lives. Someone might read a Scripture passage and share how it impacted them. Someone might speak of a lesson that the Lord taught them during the year. Another person might share their testimony of coming to faith in Christ, whether it was this year or years ago. It is a time to do what the worshippers at the temple would do. I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you (Psalm 22:22). You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told (Psalm 40:1-5). Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul (Psalm 66:16). But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone (Psalm 71:14-16). From 10:30 to 11:30 PM we fellowship in Reception Hall and enjoy refreshments. We then return to the sanctuary where the lights have been dimmed, the candles are lighted, and the organ is quietly playing. Now is the time for the communion service. It is now, after we have shared the wondrous deeds of God in our lives, that we draw our attention to the wondrous deed of our Lord s sacrifice for us. Is there a better way to close out the year and to enter the new than to recall once more the watch night service in the Upper Room and in the Garden of Gethsemane? We have come safely through another year under the watch of our Good Shepherd, and we enter into a new year under his watch.
