1 PathWays Moderator: Debbie Durden , Happy Holidays! I hope your Thanksgiving and Christmas were filled with family time, delicious food, and a true thankfulness for the many blessings God has given us all. I am particularly thankful for all of you Presbyterian Women, who give so much time and talent to your churches work as well as to PW s broader work in communities and worldwide. It was so good to see so many of you at Fall Workshops, and I hope to see many more of you at the PW Retreat at Calvin Center February You will find more information about the retreat in this issue of PathWays. We have celebrated Advent a time of expectation, symbolized not only by the fourweek period of preparation, but also by the lighting of an Advent candle on each Sunday of the season and the Christ candle on Christmas Eve. The flame of each new candle reminds us that something is happening but more is still to come. The tradition of the Advent wreath is traced back to an old Scandinavian custom that celebrated the coming of light after a season of darkness. In that day, candles were placed on the edge of a horizontal wheel. As the wheel was spun around, the lighted candles would blend into a continuous circle of light. Today we use the circle of evergreen to symbolize the continuous power of God, which knows no beginning or end. An old Celtic Advent carol exhorts us to Light the candle; Jesus is coming. Open your hearts; prepare ye the way. Sleepers awake, for soon is the dawning. He will turn night into glorious day. He will turn night into day. Not only does Advent celebrate the coming of Christ as a baby but also looks forward to His coming again. The same Celtic carol tells us to be of good cheer and put away fear, the light now is coming to dry every tear and asks will you be ready for Him when He comes? As we enter the new year, my hope for each of you is that you will find time to meditate on God s wonderful gift, that He will grant you patience in the waiting, that the lights of Christmas will remind you that Jesus came to dispel the darkness of this world, and that you will be ready when He comes again. Blessings and peace to you, ************************* Winter 2016 Volume 29 Issue 3 ************************* Please read and share this information with all Presbyterian Women ************************* Editor: Mary Martin mary.martin@nokia.com Featuring: Moderator s Message Page 1 PW Calendar Page 1 PW Retreat Flyer Page 2 District Reports Pages 3-7 Debbie January 11 January 28, 8:30 a.m. February March 3 March 8 March 19 April 27, 9:00 a.m. PW Calendar 2017 National Human Trafficking Awareness Day PWP Coordinating Team meeting, Lawrenceville Pres. These students are all attending colleges and universities in cities other than Atlanta and will come here on their Christmas break rather than getting to go to their home countries. For two weeks they will be in Atlanta and stay with host volunteers. You can still volunteer as a host go to the AMIS website at and click on "Volunteer with AMIS" and then on "Christmas International House", scroll down and click on "fill out the secure form". If you need help with this, contact Karen Turney, kt2654@gmail.com (phone ). Here is what a couple of THIS year's students are saying about themselves: Ju-Ya from Taiwan: "Actually, the most appealing part of this fantastic program is that by staying with local family, I can get to know and experience the American life style and immerse myself in it...since I have come to the USA, I have spent lots of the time with friends who come from other countries, but I haven t had the experience to live with (an) American. This would be a kind of regret that I have no chance to experience the American suburban hospitality and cultural exchange." Genki from Japan: "I like History, Economics and culture because knowing about history and economy makes my thinking flexible and intelligent. I think that Atlanta is the best place to learn about them. Vivian from Taiwan: "I want to be an architect in the future, but now I am still building the foundation of the dream with my whole tons of interests and experiences. I am planning to travel to as many states or countries as possible, either by earning scholarships or by making good use of any chance and opportunity. That's also why I am learning so many foreign languages, including German, French, Japanese and Korean. (So far I can speak Taiwanese and English very well.) Learning about different cultures and adapting to new lifestyles are always meaningful and interesting to me, and I believe I cannot only be a receiver but also a giver to the people I know." 7

Over time Thornwell has reached out to communities in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida with community-based programs to help children and families grow together and thrive. This emphasis on building families is now reflected in the new logo of Thornwell, Building Tomorrow s Families Today. The campus in South Carolina continues to hum with the chatter and laughter of children, the cluck of chickens on the farm and the peacefulness of the pastoral setting. Living in family-style homes, loving family teachers and educators offer children Christian love and caring and a place to grow emotionally, academically and spiritually toward their full potential. Statistics indicate that grandparents are increasingly caring for their grandchildren. As grandparents run out of energy, health and/or funding, Thornwell is ready to help! A partnership with Thornwell can be a win-win for all. Childcare is moving in the direction of supporting and building families during a child s early years. To this end, Thornwell opened an Early Head Start Program in September to help families with children 0-36 months. This Program complements the ongoing 4-year old Kindergarten Program. Beyond the campus community-based programs offer family support services. In Gwinnett, DeKalb and Roswell, Building Families Specialists offer practical, hands-on tools to improve a child s behavior and reduce stress for parents. Parenting classes are also available for parents who want to improve relationships with their children. Ways you can help Continue to save Box Tops. Thornwell recently received $3200 from this effort! Use when ordering & designate Thornwell to receive support! Visit the campus. A day trip is being planned for April. Refer to the Thornwell website or Sherri Bozardt, , Sherri.Bozardt@ thornwell.org or Mary Evans, tmevans@bellsouth.net, for anything Thornwell.

9 Issues Sheila Louder, Amendment 2 Passes! (Safe Harbor for Sexually Exploited Children Fund) You Did It! Thank You! On November 8 th Georgia citizens sent a resounding message that funding for Georgia s children who have been sexually exploited is a priority. This fund will provide rehabilitative and social services through a Commission appointed by Governor Nathan Deal in The amendment will impose a new tax on strip clubs and other adult entertainment businesses. It will also allow for additional fines to be placed on convicted sex traffickers and an annual $5,000 fee on adult entertainment businesses. It is expected that the adult entertainment businesses will challenge the amendment in court. Georgia is prepared for the challenge as it will use cases from other states by adult entertainment businesses that resulted in the court upholding a similar amendment passage.
