1 HARBOR DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Fall/Winter2016 Today, Tomorrow & Beyond God is calling us to Provide! Greetings from The Co-President The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. John 3:8 NRSV A Fresh Wind Blowing, inspired by these words of Jesus, was the theme of the Southeastern Jurisdiction United Methodist Women Quadrennial Meeting, held in Charleston, SC, June 3-5, Several members of our Harbor District UMW Leadership Team attended; and received a great blessing and inspiration from the experience! Our keynote speaker on Friday evening was the Reverend Jasmine Smothers, an Associate Director of Connectional Ministries of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church and former Senior Associate Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Atlanta Georgia. The Reverend Smothers was a powerhouse speaker! She charged us to examine our own faith walk and to really live out our faith! We should not be hesitant, or settle for second best, but should ask what God wants us to do, and accept the challenge! Only then can our world really change! I don t think anyone who heard the Reverend Smothers sermon was the same after the evening was over! On Saturday afternoon, we were privileged to hear a report on General Conference by our National UMW President, Yvette Kim Richards. Ms. Richards reported that we have 96 national mission institutions, supported with UMW funds! These are all in the United States, of course. There are many mission institutions in other countries as well! Ms. Richards reminded us that 2016 is the 60 th anniversary of full clergy rights for women in the United Methodist Church. There was no hesitation when the motion was made in 1956, to grant women in the United Methodist Church full clergy rights! This is truly an event to celebrate! Ms. Richards noted that United Methodist Women are partnered with United Methodist Men in the prevention of domestic violence. There are myriad possibilities for working together in our local churches on this issue that affects all people! Ms. Richards also reminded us to check the national UMW website regularly. There are free videos on many relevant UMW topics that can be used for local programs and events. Continued on page 6 And my God will supply every need of yours to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 3 F A L L /WI N T E R 2016 P A G E 3 S ecr etary s Report It s time again to start work on the 2017 Harbor District Directory. In order for the directories to have up-to-date information, each unit needs to submit their list of officers to the new Harbor District Secretary by November 1. On page 93 of the 2016 Directory is the form that you may use to submit the unit officer information. If your officers did not change for 2017, please drop the new secretary a note to let her know that there will be no changes for your unit. The following information is printed in the directory for each of your Executive Committee members: name, address, telephone, e- mail address. If addresses are available, please be sure to submit them as this is the preferred method for getting in touch with our members. Your cooperation in this is greatly appreciated. The directories should be available for distribution to the Presidents at the January training session. For those of you who have already submitted your officer information, I will be sure that the new secretary who will be elected at our District Annual Meeting in October gets that information. If I can be of assistance, please contact me. We were able to furnish an apartment and supply kitchen equipment and food to start through donations from our members. We will work with the family, a mother and two children, for 6 months as they become self-sufficient. We will be helping them develop English skills and introduce them to our culture. They are from the Democratic Republic of Congo. H A R B O R T I D I N G S FHUMC at the airport waiting for the family to arrive. North Carolina Conference Annual Conference I had the privilege of representing the Harbor District United Methodist Women at the Conference Annual Meeting in June, 2016 held in Greenville, N.C. The meeting was jam packed with excellent pastors, teachers, and old friends to visit. If you would like to know more details about the meeting, this year you can get daily results by going to nccumc.org and clicking on the annual meeting link. From there go to the section marked Saddlebags and you will get a thorough daily report of events. One of the highlights of the 3 day meeting was that a good friend to UMW, Rev. Leonard Fairley was selected to be presented for a possible position as a Bishop. Since the meeting, we have been informed that Bishop Fairly will be appointed to the Kentucky and Red Bird Conference. The theme of our conference this year is going to center around Giving. Individually we may be limited in what we can give, but as a group, we can do amazing things. Sherry Mewborn, Co-President, Harbor District Continued from front page: On Sunday, our worship was led by our own Bishop Hope Morgan Ward of our North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Bishop Ward spoke about working as Christians to meet the needs of our communities. When we really get excited about working through Christ to help others, great work can be accomplished. Not only will those we are helping receive the benefit, but we will benefit, as well! We also received great inspiration from all our worship experiences, including singing, watching liturgical dance, and celebrating communion. We were excited that Ann Davis from our North Carolina Conference was re-elected as a National UMW Director. It is my hope that many of our Harbor District UMW women will take advantage of all the opportunities we have to learn more about our organization and the opportunities we have to participate in mission on the local, district, conference, jurisdictional and national levels. You will learn more about some of these opportunities in this issue of HARBOR TIDINGS! Janet Shew, Co-President Harbor District
