Completing Projects As you realize, Fr. Frank is trying to complete all the needed projects in order to leave the parish in the best possible condition for a new pastor! In the church, just this past week we saw new book racks and new missals installed. Then we saw new carpeting in the parish center installed. Some of you may recall that there has been a long unfinished project that began in the spring of Yes four years ago but this week it should be finally finished. The parish photo directory was highly anticipated when we began the process with over 200 individuals and families having their photos taken. Then in the fall of that year, all of the parish ministries and committees had group photos taken. Everything was on schedule until We had computer issues and additional photos and materials from the parish had to be collected and laid out in a printable document. All of that however, was completed by late summer of Finally, the final set of parish materials was shipped to the company in the fall of The next hurdle was the getting the photo directory company to complete their end of the task. First there were family photos missing, then we needed to check on the accuracy of the spelling of names, etc. And there were many that needed to be corrected. A first "proof set" of the book arrived in March/April of To our dismay, none of the photos in the family section, the company's responsibility, were edited. So, the process of ensuring that all photos were included and the names listed correctly began again. The fact that we had been having such difficulty in contacting the representatives, coupled with the fact that we were promised "proofs" one month after we delivered our material and it took four to five months, should have set off alarm signals. But the president of the company assured us that he would have the directory expedited. Finally, last August we received a new "proof", which still needed some adjustments. We redid the cover and were promised that the color would match what we preferred. Finally, with a list of about 9 errors to be corrected, the "final proofs" were returned in November Fr. Frank spoke with the company representative in December and we were promised delivery in January January came and went with the company phone message continuing to say that the company was closed for the Christmas holidays until January 4th. Finally, a family member, not the company itself, responded to our voice message, and explained that the two factions of the company were both in bankruptcy and it turns out that Summerfield Studios, the photography component, had been in bankruptcy since the fall of Mr. Mark Erwin, president of My Church Family Album Co., contacted us via and stated that he was attempting to print St. Martha's directory as it was complete and we would have it done by April. Of course April came and went. We had repeatedly asked, via as that proved to be our only means of communication which has since stopped, that the proofs and the family photos be forwarded to us, which was an option that had been suggested by the family member who contacted us in February. Therefore as a great deal of effort and expense already went into this, Father has decided to have the directory printed here on LI and we were able to have the final corrections resolved. The books, which are beautiful and reflect a portion of the history of the parish during Fr. Frank's tenure, will arrive this week and we will be distributing them next weekend, June 11-12th. HOWEVER, THE PARISH WAS ENTITLED TO HAVE 250 COPIES OF THE BOOK PRINTED AS PART OF THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT. Additional pages and additional copies would have made the parish responsible for a reasonable additional cost. Printing the books here has significantly increased the cost to the parish. While My Church Family Album company promised a copy of the book in addition to the free 8x10in photo, which have been received, to those who had their photos taken, we are now in a position where the cost of "free" copies of the book is not feasible for the parish to absorb. THEREFORE, WE ARE ASKING THOSE WHO WISH A COPY OF THE BOOK TO PAY A SMALL FEE TO OFFSET PRINTING COSTS. Those individuals and families whose photos appear in the family section may obtain one copy at a fee of $10. Those who did not avail themselves of the opportunity to have their family photo included may purchase a copy of the book for a fee of $20. DISTRIBUTION WILL TAKE PLACE AFTER EACH MASS NEXT WEEKEND IN THE STAGE ROOM IN BETHANY HALL. Kathleen Lyons, Editor 3

Bulletin Reflection St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given Himself up for me. What do we give to - and do - for others? What do we give to - and do - for Jesus? Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards of God s mercy in our parish who care for the sick by visiting family members and friends who are ill, praying for the sick individually by name or making a meal for people who are facing difficult situations in caring for a sick loved one. 5

Sensitivity and Suffering Fr. Ron Rolheiser Week of June Daniel Berrigan, in one of his famous quips, once wrote: Before you get serious about Jesus, first consider carefully how good you are going to look on wood! In saying this, he was trying to highlight something that s often radically misunderstood from almost every side, namely, how and why authentic religion brings suffering into our lives. On the one hand, all too common is the idea that if you welcome God into your life you will have an easier walk through life; God will spare you from many of the illnesses and sufferings that afflict others. Conversely, many others nurse the feeling, if not explicit belief, that God means for us to suffer, that there s an intrinsic connection between suffering and depth, and that the more painful something is the better it is for you spiritually. There is, of course, some deep truth in this, spiritual depth is inextricably connected to suffering, as the Cross of Jesus reveals; and scripture does say that God chastises those who draw close to Him. But there are countless ways to misunderstand this. Jesus did say that we must take up our cross daily and follow him and that following him means precisely accepting a special suffering. But we might ask: Why? Why should suffering enter into our lives more deeply because we take Jesus seriously? Shouldn t the opposite be true? Does true religion somehow stand against our natural exuberance? Is suffering deep and joy superficial? And, what does this say about God? Is God masochistic? Does God want and demand our suffering? Why is a certain inflow of pain necessarily concomitant with taking God seriously? Pain will flow into us more deeply when we take God seriously not because God wants it or because pain is somehow more blessed than joy. None of these. Suffering and pain are not what God wants; they re negatives, to be eliminated in heaven. But, to the extent that we take God seriously, they will flow more deeply into our lives because in a deeper opening to God we will stop falsely protecting ourselves against pain and become much more sensitive so that life can flow more freely and more deeply into us. In that sensitivity, we will stop unconsciously manipulating everything so as to keep ourselves secure and pain-free. Simply put, we will experience deeper pain in our lives because, being more sensitive, we will be experiencing everything more deeply. The opposite is also true. If someone, as a crass expression might put it, is so insensitive so as to be thick as plank, his own insensitivity will surely immunize him against many sufferings and the pain of others will rarely disturb his peace of mind. Of course, he won t experience meaning and joy very deeply either, that s the price tag for insensitivity. A number of years ago, Michael Buckley, the California Jesuit, preached at the first mass of a newly ordained priest. In his homily, he didn t ask the newly ordained man if he was strong enough to be a priest, but rather if he was weak enough to be a priest. In teasing out what s contained in that paradox, Buckley helps answer the question of why drawing nearer to God also means drawing nearer to suffering: Is this man deficient enough so that he cannot ward off significant suffering from his life, so that he lives with a certain amount of failure, so that he feels what it is to be an average man? Is there any history of confusion, of self-doubt, of interior anguish? Has he had to deal with fear, come to terms with frustrations, or accepted deflated expectations? 6

Sensitivity and Suffering (Cont d) Fr. Ron Rolheiser Week of June Buckley then goes on to make a comparison between Socrates and Jesus, as a study in human excellence, and highlights how Socrates appears, in many ways, to be the stronger person. Like Jesus, he too was unjustly condemned to death, but, unlike Jesus, he never went into fear and trembling or sweated blood over his impending death. He had drank the poison with calm and died. Jesus, as we know, didn t undergo his death with nearly the same calm. The superficial judgment, Buckley suggests, is to see their different reactions to death in the light of their different deaths, crucifixion so much more horrible than drinking poison. But that, Buckley submits, while containing some truth, is secondary, not the real reason. Why did Jesus struggle more deeply with his death than Socrates did with his? Because of his extraordinary sensitivity. Jesus simply was less able to protect himself against pain. He felt things more deeply and consequently was more liable to physical pain and weariness, more sensitive to human rejection and contempt, more affected by love and hate. Socrates was a great, heroic man, no doubt; but, unlike Jesus who wept over Jerusalem, he never wept over Athens, never expressed sorrow and pain over the betrayal of friends. He was strong, possessed, calm, never overwhelmed. Jesus, for his part, was less able to protect himself against pain and betrayal and, consequently, was sometimes overwhelmed. 9 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. 10 June 25-26, 2016 St. Martha is the patroness of hospitality and the parish is known throughout the Diocese for its warm and welcoming atmosphere. So it is only fitting on the last weekend of Msgr. Francis J. Caldwell s Pastorate at St. Martha s that hospitality will be a priority as we wish Father a fond farewell. A reception in Bethany Hall after each Mass that weekend is planned and will allow all parishioners the opportunity to wish him well in his new assignment as Pastor of Curé of Ars in Merrick. The 11:00am Mass, Father s last Sunday Mass as Pastor, will be a multi-cultural celebration and the reception afterward will include a small ceremony acknowledging Father s efforts on behalf of the family of St. Martha here in Uniondale. Come to one reception or come to them all. We look forward to seeing everyone that weekend at Mass and at the receptions following! We do need help. For each of the five Masses, there will be a separate hospitality committee responsible for setting up the refreshments and paper goods, serving and cleaning up afterward. We will also need a committee to plan on decorating Bethany Hall for the occasion. Marist Missions Around the World (Second Collection ) Since its official recognition by the Church in 1836, the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers and Brothers) has committed itself to the missions in the southwestern Pacific. Since that time, the Marists have expanded into areas in Africa, Asia and South America. Today there are nearly 230 priests and brothers working in bush stations, teaching in schools and seminaries, ministering in training institutions, providing direct service to the poor, oppressed and marginalized, and contributing to the development of people for a better society and a strong local Church. Contributions to the Marists will help them in their mission of witness to the Gospel, service the needy and helping the local Church to build a strong base for its promising future. Thank you for whatever you can do to help them in their life-long commitment and work. Vocation Prayer Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Christians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN 11

Dear Lord, As my life declines and my energies decrease, more than ever hold me by Your Power, that I may not offend You, but daily increase in Your Love. Give me strength to work in Your Service till the last day of my life. Help me to ever have an increasing dread of venial sin, or whatever would cause the slightest withdrawal of Your Love; all day long, and at night keep me close to Your Heart; and should I die, ere the morning breaks, may I go rejoicing in that vision of Your entrancing beauty, never to be separated from You. Amen. Right after 911, I had this vision; a man dressed in white told me, You see what happened? I said yes. He said You know why this is happening? It s because they don't have love for one another like we have. He said Go and tell the whole world to recite Psalm 25. I asked him how was I to do that? He said Go tell Oprah. I know myself as a shy and timid person; I could never tell Oprah or tell anyone. But after what happened in Boston, I felt such guilt and disobedience in not doing what I was told. The same way that the Lord loves us, so we must love one another. Please help me to tell the world to recite Psalm 25 and maybe the world will be a better place. Thank you, Marie FanFan To thee, O LORD, I lift up my soul. 2 O my God, in thee I trust, let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. 3 Yea, let none that wait for thee be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. 4 Make me to know thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me, for thou art the God of my salvation; for thee I wait all the day long. 6 Be mindful of thy mercy, O LORD, and of thy steadfast love, for they have been from of old.
