Saint Martha Roman Catholic Church 546 GREENGROVE AVENUE, UNIONDALE, NEW YORK Phone: (516) I would once again like to thank all of those who helped with our Volunteer Day of Recollection. It went much better than I envisioned. It is very affirming to see just how enthusiastic our parishioners are about working together to worship God, evangelize, and serve others. Many different aspects of parish life were discussed, great suggestions about how to move into the future were made, and parishioners were able to meet and spend time with others who they barely knew beforehand. Thank you to all! This weekend I would also like to thank Father Rony Fabien. Earlier this year he celebrated the 25 th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. This weekend our parish will be celebrating his 25 years and thanking him for his kindness and generosity to us here at St. Martha over the years. Personally, Father has been a tremendous help for me in my ministry here at Saint Martha. We wish him blessings for years to come! Next weekend is Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion, the beginning of the holiest week of the year. The schedule for Palm Sunday, all of Holy Week, and Easter Sunday, are found in the bulletin. Please note that for Palm Sunday and Easter there will be two 8:45 Masses (in the Church and in Bethany Hall). Palm Sunday is one of the most attended weekends of the Church year. The extra attendance can create issues but they are all good issues to have! I ask that everyone show kindness and sense of warmth and welcome to any who will be visiting our parish over the next weeks, as well as anyone returning (if each of you brought someone that would be a lot!). Please exercise patience entering and leaving the church to allow for a smooth flow of people. There is not a lot of time between the Sunday morning Masses. Next weekend we will have a one way flow of people into and out of the church. We ask that everyone enter the church by the main doors on Greengrove Avenue and leave after Mass by way of the side doors. Follow the directions of the ushers. Also, please do not enter the church while another Mass is being celebrated. This is very distracting to all. Thank you for your understanding.

Pere Chris 3

YOU WILL DIE IN YOUR SINS Sin does not contain only an outrageous disobedience but, in addition, an extreme ingratitude. Although sinners do not deserve that one show consideration for them in any way, still if the great Saint Ambrose had not first made use even of the example of a dog in order to teach us gratitude, I would not have dared mention what I am going to say. About two years ago, [while] in a town in France, someone recounted to me that, shortly before, a dog had bitten his master, who was entering his house in disguise and very abruptly. This poor animal developed such a great regret of what he had done that it was impossible to console him of it. He went to hide himself under a vat from which [the master] tried in vain to withdraw him, what little he could pet him. He presented him to eat and to drink everything that could be most to his taste, without ever being able to get him to touch it. Finally, [the dog] died three days later of pure sadness, unable to withstand the distress that he had of having been mistaken in the person of the one who fed him and who himself had despaired of not being able to save this beast who was made lovable in his gratitude. Whoever can make up his mind to offend the Creator, the Master of all things, if he wants to examine the sentiments of his heart, will find that he would wish that there were no God, or at least, that this God lacked either justice or the strength to punish him, which is to desire his entire destruction. YOU WILL TRULY BE FREE Just as there is such a thing as a vicious circle, a state of being imprisoned in the negative when one no leads to another and makes the whole thing ever more impossible to get out of, so there is also what could be called a healing circle of salvation, in which one yes gives birth to another. It is important that in this the right relationship of nature and grace should always be safeguarded. And agape that is not sustained and affirmed by my own nature, that aims at pushing the self to one side and challenging it, becomes sullen and obstinate. It frightens the other person off and nourishes the internal conflict within myself. The challenge of the cross is something quite different. It reaches deeper: it demands that I give my ego into Jesus hands, not so that he may destroy it but so that in him it may become free and expand. The yes of Jesus Christ that I hand on is only really his if it has also become completely mine. Thus a great deal of patience and humility also belongs to this way, just as the Lord has patience with us: it is not a headlong leap into heroism that makes someone a saint but patiently and humbly walking with Jesus, step by step. Holiness does not consist in adventurous achievements of virtue, but in joining him in loving. Hence the real saints are also the quite human, quite natural people in whom through the Easter transformation and purification what his human appears afresh in its total originality and beauty. SAINT CLAUDE LA COLOMBIÈRE (+1682 was a French Jesuit priest and the spiritual director of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. POPE BENEDICT XVI reigned as pope from 2005 to Bulletin Reflection If anyone would serve Me, says Jesus in today s Gospel, let him follow Me; where I am, there will My servant be. In what ways is Jesus inviting me to follow Him? What service is He asking of me? Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who embrace every aspect of their lives as gift by surrendering to Christ their very selves through service to the parish and the wider community. 7

Our Most Common Sin Fr. Ron Rolheiser Week of March 11, 2018 Classically Christianity has listed seven sins as deadly sins, meaning that most everything else we do which is not virtuous somehow takes its root in one these congenital propensities. These are the infamous seven: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. In spiritual literature the first three, pride, greed, and lust get most of the ink and attention. Pride is presented as the root of all sin, Lucifer s primordial defiance of God as forever echoed in our own lives: I will not serve! Greed is seen as the basis for our selfishness and our blindness towards others and lust has often been given the ultimate notoriety, as if the Sixth Commandment were the only commandment. Not to deny the importance of these, but I suspect that the sin which most commonly afflicts us and is not much mentioned in spiritual literature is wrath, that is, anger and hatred. I venture to say that most of us operate, however unconsciously, out of anger and this shows itself in our constant criticism of others, in our cynicism, in our jealousy of others, in our bitterness, and in our inability to praise others. And unlike most of our other sins, anger is easy to camouflage and rationalize as virtue. At one level, anger often rationalizes itself as justified indignation over the foibles, stupidity, egotism, greed, and faults of others: How can I not be angry given what I see every day! Here anger shows itself in our constant irritation and in our quickness to correct, criticize, and make a cynical remark. Conversely we re very slow to praise and affirm. Perfection then becomes the enemy of the good and since nothing and no one is perfect, we re always in critical mode and we see this as a virtue rather than for what it in fact is, namely, an inchoate anger and unhappiness inside of ourselves. But our unhappy cynicism isn t the biggest problem here. More seriously, anger too often parades itself as Godly-virtue, as righteousness, as prophecy, as a healthy, divinely-inspired militancy for truth, for cause, for virtue, for God. And so we define ourselves as holy warriors and vigilant defenders of truth, taking justification in the popular (though false) conception that prophets are angry people, on passionate fire for God. However there s a near infinite distance between true prophetic anger and the anger that today commonly parades itself as prophecy. Daniel Berrigan, in his criteria for prophecy, submits (and rightly) that a prophet is someone who takes a vow of love, not of alienation. Prophecy is characterized by love aching for reconnection, not anger pushing for separation. And love isn t generally what characterizes most so-called prophetic anger in our world today, especially as it pertains to God, religion, and defense of truth. You see this in its worst form in Islamic extremism where, in the name of God, every kind of hatred, violence, and random murder puts on God s cloak. Blaise Pascal captures this well in his Pensees where he writes: Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction. He s wrong on one thing; mostly we aren t doing it cheerfully but angrily. One only has to read the letters to the editor in our newspapers, listen to most talk-radio stations, or listen to any debate on politics, religion, or morality to see raw hatred and anger justifying themselves on moral and divine grounds. There is such a thing as healthy prophetic anger, a fiery response when the poor of God, the word of God, or the truth of God are being slandered, abused, or neglected. There are important causes and boundaries to be defended. But prophetic anger is an anger that emanates out of love and empathy and always, regardless of the hatred it meets, still exhibits love and empathy, like a loving mother in the face of a belligerent child. Jesus on occasion exhibits this kind of anger, but his anger is antithetical to most of what masquerades as prophetic anger today, where love and empathy are so noticeably absent. Someone once said that we spend the first half of life struggling with the Sixth Commandment, and then spend the second-half of life struggling with the Fifth Commandment: Thou shalt not kill! We see this illustrated in the famous parable of the Prodigal Son, his Older Brother, and his Prodigal Father. The younger son is effectively out of his father s house through wrestling with the seductive energies of youth. The older brother is just as effectively outside his father s house, not through sin, but through wrestling with anger. As a young boy I was catechized to confess bad thoughts as sinful, but bad thoughts then were defined as sexual thoughts. As we age, I suggest, we might continue to confess bad thoughts, but now those bad thoughts have to do with anger. A cynic, it s said, is someone who has given up, but not shut up! He s also someone who has confused one of the seven deadly sins, wrath, with virtue. 9

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. 13 Vocation Prayer Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Christians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
