7 After a Miscarriage By Paul Turner The Catholic church s Book of Blessings include an Order for the Blessing of Parents after a Miscarriage. At a time when new parents are facing the worst possible news, the church provides an occasion for them to receive pastoral care by means of liturgical prayer. Our church keeps growing every year; people come forward to inquire about how to become a Catholic. Some are coming from other churches and faith denominations; some are just curious. Then there are those who are Catholic but have not completed their Sacraments of Initiation. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is here to answer your questions about the Catholic faith and to lead you into completing your Sacraments of Initiation. You must be an adult (at least 18 years old). The sessions will take place in three languages, all beginning in mid- September: English Parish Center on Thursdays with from 7:30pm 9:00pm and Saturdays (in the school) from 9:30am 11:00am. Creole Parish Center on Wednesdays with from 7:00pm 8:30pm. Spanish Bethany Hall on Sundays after the 8:45am Mass. If you are interested, please call and leave a detailed message at (516) , Ext. 314 for Mrs. Imogene Regan. SACRED HEART ACADEMY, 45 Cathedral Avenue, Hempstead, Long Island, will sponsor a comprehensive track and field meet for young ladies in 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grades on Friday, August 19 th, 2016 at 6:00 PM. All events including jumping, hurdling, and throwing will be held at the school s track facility. A special 4x400 meter relay will conclude the meet for females ages 9 through 90. This is a community service activity open to any interested athletes; no fees, no prior entry are required. For more details call: (516) (Mr. Ed Kilkelly) When a husband and wife receive the joyful news of a pregnancy, they begin to dream about life with their new child. If the pregnancy is lost, a child dies. In grief, parents may turn to Christ for consolation and strength. The order of blessing may be led by a priest, a deacon, or a layperson. It may take place at church, in the home, or in some other suitable location. After the sign of the cross and greeting, the minister introduces the ceremony. The suggested reading from the Book of Lamentations expresses both sorrow ( My soul is deprived of peace ) and hope ( The favors of the Lord are not exhausted ) Alternative readings are suggested. Psalm 25 may follow, and one can almost hear the voice of the child in its refrain: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. If the parents or other family members or friends feel able, they may proclaim the readings. The minister may explain the biblical text, and a series of intercessions concludes with the Lord s Prayer. The minister then offers the prayer of blessing over the parents and may sprinkle them with holy water. The rite concludes with a final prayer of blessing for all who have gathered. A shorter rite is also supplied, as circumstances suggest. If the family desires, the child could be remembered with a Mass intention and listed in the parish s book of the dead. Especially at times of unexpected grief, Christians look for ways to support one another through sorrow into hope. 8 Suicide and Mental Health By Fr. Ron Rolheiser Week of July 24, 2016 As young boy, I longed to be a professional athlete but I had to soon accept the unwelcome fact that I simply wasn t gifted with an athlete s body. Speed, strength, coordination, instinct, vision, I got by in ordinary life with what I had been given of these, but I wasn t physically robust enough to be an athlete. It took some years to make peace with that, but it took me even longer, well into mid-life, before I came to both acknowledge and give thanks for the fact that, while I wasn t blessed with an athlete s body, I had been given a robust mental health, and that this was a mammoth undeserved blessing, more important for life than an athlete s body. I had often wondered what it would be like to have an athlete s body, to possess that kind of speed, strength, and grace, but I had never wondered what it must be like not to have a strong, steady, resilient mind, one that knows how to return a lob, split a defense, not be afraid of contact, absorb a hit, and not let the rigors of the game break you. And that recognition was bought and paid for by some of the most painful moments of my life. As I aged, year after year, I began to see a number of my former classmates, colleagues, trusted mentors, acquaintances of all kinds, and dear friends lose their battle with mental health and sink, slowly or rapidly, into various forms of clinical depression, mental paralysis, mental anguish, dementia of various kinds, dark personality changes, suicide, and, and worst of all, even into murder. Slowly, painfully, haltingly, I came to know that not everyone has the internal circuits to allow them the sustained capacity for steadiness and buoyancy. I also came to learn that one s mental health is really parallel to one s physical health, fragile, and not fully within one s own control. Moreover just as diabetes, arthritis, cancer, stroke, heart attacks, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis, can cause debilitation and death, so too can mental diseases wreak deadly havoc inside the mind, also causing every kind of debilitation and, not infrequently, death, suicide. How might one define robust mental health? Robust mental health is not to be confused with intelligence or brilliance. It s neither. Rather it is steadiness, a capacity to somehow always be anchored, balanced, buoyant, and resilient in the face of all that life throws at you, good and bad. Indeed, sometimes it can be a positive blockage to creativity and brilliance. Some people, it seems, are just too grounded and sane to be brilliant! And brilliant people, gifted artists, poets, musicians, not infrequently struggle to stay solidly grounded. Brilliance and steadiness are frequently very different gifts. Through the years that I have been writing on suicide, I have received many letters, s, and phone calls, with anguished concerns about understanding mental health. One letter came for a woman, a brilliant psychoanalyst, somewhat anxious about her own steadiness and that of her family, who wrote: Everyone in my family is brilliant, but none of us is very steady! Of course, we all know families where the reverse is true. In short, we need a better understanding of mental health; perhaps not so much among doctors, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals, where there is already a considerable understanding of mental health and where valuable research goes on, but within the culture at large, particularly as this pertains to suicide. 8

9 Suicide and Mental Health Cont d By Fr. Ron Rolheiser Week of July 24, 2016 When we see someone suffering from a physical disability or a bodily disease, it s easy to understand this limitation and be moved to empathy. But this is predicated largely on the fact that we can see, physically see, the disability or the sickness. We may feel frustrated, helpless, and even angry in the face of what we see, but we generally understand. We get it! Nature has dealt this person a particular hand of cards, no one s to blame! But that s not the situation with mental health. Here the disability or sickness is not so overt or easily understood. This is particularly true where the breakdown of a person s mental health results in suicide. For centuries, this has been badly misdiagnosed, not least morally and religiously. Today, more and more, we claim to understand, even as we don t really understand. A deeper, more-intuitive eye is still required. We still don t really understand mental fragility. Our physical health can be robust or fragile, the same for our mental health. In both cases, how strong we are depends a lot upon the hand of cards we were dealt, our genetic endowment and the environment that shaped us. We don t get to order our bodies and minds from a catalogue, and nature and life don t always deal the cards evenly. We need to better understand mental health and mental breakdown. Psychologically and emotionally, we are not immune to all kinds of cancers, strokes, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. And they too can be terminal, as is the case with suicide. 11 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new link is You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped. God bless and thank you so much. 12 Right after 911, I had this vision; a man dressed in white told me, You see what happened? I said yes. He said You know why this is happening? It s because they don't have love for one another like we have. He said Go and tell the whole world to recite Psalm 25. I asked him how was I to do that? He said Go tell Oprah. I know myself as a shy and timid person; I could never tell Oprah or tell anyone. But after what happened in Boston, I felt such guilt and disobedience in not doing what I was told. The same way that the Lord loves us, so we must love one another. Please help me to tell the world to recite Psalm 25 and maybe the world will be a better place. Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Christians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN 12

13 Office Secretary/Receptionist: Mon Fri 9:00am 3:00pm for South Nassau Parish. Reliable, must be experienced in Microsoft office applications and have strong telephone and interpersonal skills. Experience, references a +. resume to mag@spl-t.com The Passion of John the Baptist Today while the virtue of John and the ferocity of Herod are related to us, our innards were shaken, our hearts trembled, our sight grew dim, our mind became dull, our hearing deserted us. For is there anything within human sensation that remains undisturbed when a large amount of vice destroys a large amount of virtue? Herod, it says, apprehended John, and had him bound, and put in prison (Mt 14:3). John was the school of the virtues, the instructor of life, the model of sanctity, the pattern of morality, the mirror of virginity, the epitome of purity, the example of chastity, the way of penitence, the pardon of sins, the discipline of faith. John was greater than a human being, equal to the angels, the apex of the Law, the seed of the Gospel, the harbinger of the Apostles, the silence of the prophets, the lamp of the world, the herald of the Judge, the forerunner of Christ, the preparer for the Lord, the witness of God, the mediator of the whole Trinity. But Herod is the very one who desecrated the Temple, ruined the priesthood, disturbed its proper order, profaned the kingdom, corrupted anything that had to do with religion, the Law, life and morals, faith, and discipline. Herod was ever an assassin toward his fellow citizens, a brigand toward people of any distinction, a ravager toward his allies, a robber toward those of his own household, a killer of the common folk, a murderer of his children, a slayer of foreigners, a parricide towards his own, drenching the land with gore in his blood-thirstiness. And so it is that he gulped down the hallowed blood of John from his enormous cup of cruelty. SAINT PETER CHRYSOLOGUS (+450), Doctor of the Church, was archbishop of Ravenna, Italy.
