Padre Chris The Heart of Gospel Perseverance My sons and daughters, you have pointed out...the sufferings and the contradictions by which society is seen to be overwhelmed when it moves away from God. The wisdom of Christ makes you capable of pushing on to discover the deepest source of evil existing in the world. And it also stimulates you to proclaim to all people, your companions in study today and in work tomorrow, the truth you have learned from the Master s lips, that is, that evil comes out of the heart of man (Mk 7:21). So sociological analyses are not enough to bring justice and peace. The root of evil is within man. The remedy, therefore, also starts from the heart. And I am happy to repeat the door of our heart can be opened only by that great and definitive word of the love of Christ for us, which is his death on the cross. It is here that the Lord wishes to lead us: within ourselves. This is real wisdom: initium sapientiae timor Domini (Sir 1:16) ST. JOHN PAUL II (+2005) reigned as pope from 1978 until

7 OUR UNWEARYING LOVE DIALOGUE If even a human lover knows how much love requires expression in words, how much more God knows this. What is prayer if not a long love dialogue in which the soul lays bare to God all its needs, its delights, its love, and its gratitude. There are various reasons why what seems obvious in human love seems strange in divine love. One would be that the absence of a visible partner in conversation gives to all prayer a quality of foolishness, unless the viewer believes as deeply as the prayer in the reality of a God who cares. Since the nonbeliever in prayer has great difficulty in trusting that God listens, it becomes even more absurd to him to think God would be willing to hear about such undivine matters as one s messy set of problems or to the repetitious prayers of the liturgy. Yet the same person, when in love, would not consider it below his dignity to enjoy the repeated hymns of praising love which his girlfriend sings to him throughout the day; nor would a girl, at the peak of her love for a boy, feel bored with hearing his thoughts about daily events. She is interested in everything about him and as eager to help him overcome petty annoyances as to come to his aid in grave difficulties. RHONDA CHERVIN is a convert from Judaism, professor of philosophy and theology, and author of over fifty books. FORGIVE Augustine says, We are mortal human beings, fragile, weak, carrying along with us our earthen vessels, which don t leave each other much room. We cannot live together in harmony, in a family or any other kind of community, without the reciprocal practice of forgiveness and mercy. We need to respond with forgiveness and even, as far as possible, by excusing others instead of condemning them. The following saying applies to us: He who excuses himself, God accuses him; he who accuses himself, God excuses him. In terms of others, the converse applies: He who excuses his brother is excused by God; he who accuses his brothers is accused by God. Forgiveness does for a community what oil does for a motor. If someone begins a trip in a car without a drop of oil in the engine, after a few minutes the whole car will be on fire. Like oil, forgiveness neutralizes friction. Having mercy for one another should be the most natural sentiment for human beings. We would have to close our ears and our eyes to the cry of desolation that reaches us from all sides not to have at least some compassion. FATHER RANIERO CANTALAMESSA, O.F.M. CAP. is the preacher to the papal household. HUMBLE SERVANTS OF GOD When the soul considers deep within itself, its eyes burning with love, the immensity of God, his fidelity, the proofs of his love, his favors which can add nothing to his happiness; then, looking at itself it sees its crimes against this immense Lord, it turns to its own center with such self-contempt that it does not know how it can endure its horror. The best thing for it to do is to complain to God, its Friend, of the strength of its self-love which betrays it by not letting it place itself as low as it would wish. It resigns itself to the will of God, and in self-abnegation, finds true, invincible, and perfect peace, which nothing can disturb. For it has plunged into such a deep abyss that no one will seek it there. If anyone should affirm to me that to find the bottom of the abyss is to be immersed in humility, I would not contradict him. However, it seems to me that to be plunged into humility is to be plunged into God, for God is the bottom of the abyss. That is why humility, like charity, is always capable of increasing. Since a humble heart is the vessel needed, the vessel capable of containing the grace God wants to pour into it, let us be humble. The humble can never rank God high enough nor themselves low enough. But here is the wonder: their weakness turns into wisdom, and the imperfection of their acts, always insufficient in their eyes, will be the greatest delight of their life. Whoever possesses humility has no need of many words to be instructed; God tells him more things than he can learn; such was the case with the Lord s disciples. 10 Come to Set Fire Just as one who suffers from a burning fever is sickened by and rejects any food or drink that you may offer him even if it were very delicious, because he is on fire with a fever and is really burning up from it, so those who are burning with a holy and venerable longing for the heavenly Spirit are wounded in their soul with love for the love of God. They burn with a divine and heavenly fire which the Lord came on this earth to enkindle. How he wishes that it be quickly accomplished! They are enflamed with a heavenly longing for Christ so that everything that is of this world, considered as outstanding and precious, is reputed base and despised on account of the fire of their love for Christ who binds them, burns them, and enflames them with a passion for God and for the heavenly good things that lead to love. From such a love nothing of the earth or underworld will separate them, as the Apostle Paul testified: Who will separate us from the love of Christ? (Rom 8:35), and all else that follows. But one cannot possess his soul and the love of the heavenly Spirit unless he cuts himself off from all the things of this world and surrenders himself to seek the love of Christ. His mind must be freed from all crass and material concerns so that he may be totally taken up with only one aim, namely, to direct all these things according to the commandments so that his whole concern, striving, attention and preoccupation of soul may be centered on the search for transcendent values as the soul may strive to be adorned with the Gospel virtues and the heavenly Spirit, and may become a participator in the purity and sanctification of Christ. Contact the Office of Communications, , ext You do not want to come to me to have life Attachment comes from selfish love; it stands in the way of every holy desire and perpetrates every sort of evil. Those who are in love with themselves live in luke-warmness of heart. On the one hand, God calls to them by letting them see what a short time they have to live, how wretchedly weak the world is, how unstable and fickle. God lets them see that every least pleasure and concern people pursue excessively, apart from God, is punished miserably. So they begin to hate and despise the world and would gladly rise above it, realizing that those who abandon the world I mean those who make light of the world s pleasures and status and ostentation will possess the world. They realize that every good is rewarded, and that they will receive in return a hundred times as much [as they have given up]. They are, therefore, ready to abandon the world completely. But if selfish love is still alive in their heart, this desire becomes tepid. In their attachment they go on being attached [to the world] and procrastinating. This is not the way to act. We should kill all selfish love, reflecting that we are not sure we will have time. If we were sure of it, we could say, I ll get around to loosening this tie with the world, and once I am free, I ll go and bind myself to Christ crucified with the yoke of obedience. Since you are not sure of having time, throw off all selfish love and sensual attachment. Think not of untying but rather of cutting. Take up in the hand of your free choice a knife that has two edges, hatred and love love for virtue and hatred and contempt for vice and for the world and for your selfish sensuality. This is how you will prove you are a courageous person, not lukewarm or indifferent. Respond, respond to God, who is calling you with good holy inspirations. The place is ready for you. SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA (+1380), Doctor of the Church, was a Dominican, stigmatist, and papal counselor. 10

Bulletin Reflection Today s readings paint a somewhat frightening picture of the end of time. But the Gospel ends with the assurance to faithful stewards that those who persevere will be saved. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who live each day preparing for the coming of the Son of Man. Vocation Prayer Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Christians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN 11

13 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months.
