5 I Am the Truth Evil has not an existence of itself. Its business is destruction. And, like physical malignancy, destroying good is its work and scope. Evil is everything that God is not. It is everything that God has not created; evil is distortion to the point of deception. It is the lie. Our blessed Savior said, I am...the truth (Jn 14:6). Evil is the negation of truth, without reality in itself, but rather the absence of that reality which is the good. Therefore, malignancy of the soul would of necessity have pretenses as its expressions, since evil is the lie. It can never have any expression of itself except some form of untruthfulness. The first lie that the world tells us is that it is a lasting city. Once we subscribe, even in small measure, to this deception, all things assume a disproportion. If the world is our lasting city, ipso facto and instanter, our values are changed. The world keeps insisting, I am what endures. Pitch your tent here. Put your roots down in me. Once we lose our healthy sense of the world as a lovely stopping-off place, but passing, fading and ephemeral, once we lose the sense that we are pilgrims in via ad Patrem...and clasp it to ourselves as a lasting city, all things are distorted. From this first lie of the world, that we have here a lasting city, we ask Jesus to defend us. MOTHER MARY FRANCIS (+2006) was the abbess of the Poor Clare Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Roswell, New Mexico. NOE GARCIA is from Guatemala. Vocation Prayer Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Christians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN A quote from Pope Francis: There is a relationship between our life and that of mother earth, between the way we live and the gift we have received from God. 'The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation.' Yet just as both can 'deteriorate,' we can also say that they can 'support one another and can be changed for the better.' This reciprocal relationship can lead to openness, transformation, and life, or to destruction and death. One thing is certain: we can no longer turn our backs on reality, on our brothers and sisters, on mother earth. It is wrong to turn aside from what is happening all around us, as if certain situations did not exist or have nothing to do with our life. It is not lawful, much less human, to enter into the culture of waste. Again and again we sense the urgency of the question which God put to Cain, 'Where is your brother?' But I wonder if our answer continues to be: 'Am I my brother s keeper?' -- Meeting at Pontifical Catholic University, Quito, Ecuador, July 8,

6 Do You Love Me? When they re all together on that morning...and Jesus had made breakfast for everybody what care and no one dared speak because they all knew it was the Lord. He s near Simon and he says to him, very softly, without the others realizing, he says quietly, Simon, do you love me more than these? This is the culmination of Christian morality: the beginning and the end of Christian morality. He didn t tell him, Simon, you betrayed me. Simon, think how many mistakes you made. Simon, how many betrayals! Simon, just think that you can make the same mistake tomorrow and the day after. Think about how fragile you are, what a coward you are in front of me. No! Simon, do you love me more than these? He went to the depths of everything, to the bottom of everything; so this bottom of everything pulls everything along with it. And Peter, who loved him, ended up dying like him. Saint Thomas says, more or less, that man finds his dignity in the choice of what he values most in life and from which he expects the greatest satisfaction. SERVANT OF GOD MONSIGNOR LUIGI GIUSSANI (+2005) was a priest from Milan, Italy, and was the founder of the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation. St. Athanasius Feast Day: May 2 (295?-373) Athanasius led a tumultuous but dedicated life of service to the Church. He was the great champion of the faith against the widespread heresy of Arianism, the teaching by Arius that Jesus was not truly divine. The vigor of his writings earned him the title of doctor of the Church. Born of a Christian family in Alexandria, Egypt, and given a classical education, Athanasius became secretary to Alexander, the bishop of Alexandria, entered the priesthood and was eventually named bishop himself. His predecessor, Alexander, had been an outspoken critic of a new movement growing in the East Arianism. When Athanasius assumed his role as bishop of Alexandria, he continued the fight against Arianism. At first it seemed that the battle would be easily won and that Arianism would be condemned. Such, however, did not prove to be the case. The Council of Tyre was called and for several reasons that are still unclear, the Emperor Constantine exiled Athanasius to northern Gaul. This was to be the first in a series of travels and exiles reminiscent of the life of St. Paul. After Constantine died, his son restored Athanasius as bishop. This lasted only a year, however, for he was deposed once again by a coalition of Arian bishops. Athanasius took his case to Rome, and Pope Julius I called a synod to review the case and other related matters. Five times Athanasius was exiled for his defense of the doctrine of Christ s divinity. During one period of his life, he enjoyed 10 years of relative peace reading, writing and promoting the Christian life along the lines of the monastic ideal to which he was greatly devoted. His dogmatic and historical writings are almost all polemic, directed against every aspect of Arianism. Among his ascetical writings, his Life of St. Anthony (January 17) achieved astonishing popularity and contributed greatly to the establishment of monastic life throughout the Western Christian world. Bulletin Reflection Today s reading from Revelation offers a vision of the City of God, the new Jerusalem. The bishops pastoral on stewardship reminds us, that life to come is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards who practice the corporal work of mercy - to clothe the naked - by making clothing donations to thrift stores, organizing a drive to send sport uniforms to children in developing countries or sacrificing the purchase of new clothing to donate to agencies that provide clothing to those in need. THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instils in us the courage to look to the future with hope. Pope Francis, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy During these days of Easter joy and in the spirit of the Resurrection let us come together to pray and share and deepen the gifts of mercy that we have been given. Please join us each Wednesday beginning April 13 th from 1:00 pm to 3:00pm or in the evening from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in Bethany Hall. Let us respond to the invitation of Pope Francis as he says, May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst! ~MRS. 7 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. Hand... +April 23, 2016 Sixth Pastor of St. Martha s. FATHER CHRISTOPHER COSTIGAN grew up in nearby Oceanside, NY and attended Saint Christopher's Parish and School. He entered Chaminade High School and after graduation attended the University of Notre Dame. He graduated in 2002 with a degree in Government and International Studies, Philosophy, and Theology. Following college he worked for one year as an Emergency Medical Technician for a local fire department. In 2003 he entered the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington to study for the priesthood for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 14, 2008 and was assigned to the parish of Saint Bernard in Levittown. In 2013 he was assigned to Saint Mary in Manhasset, and in June 2016 will become pastor of Saint Martha in Uniondale. Father Chris has also been a member of the Oceanside Fire Department since 1998 and was appointed Department Chaplain in In 2015, Fr. Chris was appointed as a diocesan chaplain to the Nassau County Fire Service. In addition to the Fighting Irish, he is also a fan of the New York Yankees, New York Jets, and the New York Islanders. Father Costigan has pursued advanced studies in liturgy at Notre Dame and for several years was an instructor in Liturgical Studies. 8 Dear Lord, As my life declines and my energies decrease, more than ever hold me by Your Power, that I may not offend You, but daily increase in Your Love. Give me strength to work in Your Service till the last day of my life. Help me to ever have an increasing dread of venial sin, or whatever would cause the slightest withdrawal of Your Love; all day long, and at night keep me close to Your Heart; and should I die, ere the morning breaks, may I go rejoicing in that vision of Your entrancing beauty, never to be separated from You. Amen. Right after 911, I had this vision; a man dressed in white told me, You see what happened? I said yes. He said You know why this is happening? It s because they don't have love for one another like we have. He said Go and tell the whole world to recite Psalm 25. I asked him how was I to do that? He said Go tell Oprah. I know myself as a shy and timid person; I could never tell Oprah or tell anyone. But after what happened in Boston, I felt such guilt and disobedience in not doing what I was told. The same way that the Lord loves us, so we must love one another. Please help me to tell the world to recite Psalm 25 and maybe the world will be a better place. MESSAGE IMPORTANT : Après la catastrophe du 11 Septembre, l une de nos sœurs Marie Fanfan a eu une vision dans laquelle un homme lui disait qu il n y avait pas assez d amour dans le monde et que tous les chrétiens devaient réciter le psaume 25. Par timidité elle ne voulait pas communiquer la nouvelle; mais, après l incident de Boston elle a jugé nécessaire de faire passer le message. Elle demande à tous de l aider à faire circuler la nouvelle et de prier pour un monde meilleur.
