As January 22 is a Sunday, tomorrow we will have a day of prayer for the protection of all human life. The 8:30 morning Mass will use the special prayers for the occasion. Padre Chris Jesus vs. Our Faulty Expectations God does not answer man s expectations, the expectation of pride, of flesh and blood, not of the Spirit of God who wills all that is best for man. God does not do what man expects him to do, does not approach him in the form he wants, which at the deepest level means that God, far from boosting man and making him feel grand, does exactly the opposite. The effect of God drawing close to us always means that what Isaiah said of the suffering servant becomes true for us. In a very deep way we have to sacrifice that which seems to make us man, what we think of as a beautiful spirituality; we have to be changed in a way that seems to make us less, not more human. There is nothing here naturally attractive to man; rather, his instinct must be to turn away in revulsion. This, in practice, in hard reality, is what it means to embrace Jesus crucified, and, embracing him, embrace he who sent him and whose revelation he is. SISTER RUTH BURROWS, O.C.D. is a Carmelite nun at Quidenham in Norfolk, England. She is the author of a number bestselling books. 3

6 Lectio Divina A Prayerful Reading of Sacred Scripture The Gospel for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 4:12-23 When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled (4:12-14). Withdrew: Jesus withdraws in order to renew his dedication to his ministry: Mt 12:15; 14:13; 15:21. The Magi withdraw (Mt 2:12-13a); Joseph withdraws to protect the Holy Family (Mt 2:14, 22). Capernaum by the sea Saint Thomas Aquinas: Capernaum signifies the Church mystically, because the Church is set next to the afflictions of the world. Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, / the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, / Galilee of the Gentiles, / the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen (4:15-16). The people who sit in darkness Father John Justus Landsberg (+1539): Do you ask what darkness? Whatever is present in our intellect, in our will, or in our memory that is not God, or which has not its source in God; that is to say, whatever in us is not for God s sake, is a barrier between God and the soul it is darkness. Light has arisen: This will happen literally at the Transfiguration (Mt 17:2). From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (4:17). Saint John Chrysostom: In this commencement Jesus speaks nothing severe, but he puts first things merciful, preaching the glad tidings of the Kingdom of heaven. Repent: Repentance is always ordered to a person. Father Antonin Sertillanges, O.P.: By repentance, I assume the responsibility for what I have done and at the same time, I lay it down. I retract and I redeem myself. I cast myself off and take myself back. Saint Gregory the Great: God willingly forgets that we have done wrong; God is ready to count our repentance as innocence. If we have defiled ourselves since we were washed clean by the waters of salvation, let us be born again by our tears. As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. At once they left their nets and followed him (4:18-20). As he was walking Aquinas: The fact that Jesus called his disciples while walking signifies that he drew us to himself by the mystery of his Incarnation. He saw two brothers Aquinas: Both pertain to charity, which consists in the love of God and of neighbor. And this is why Jesus chose pairs and sent pairs for preaching, for he wished to signify spiritual charity by this. They were fishermen Aquinas: The Lord chose men from the most simple state of life fishermen so that what was done through them would not be attributed to human wisdom. A priority of Jesus, upon hearing of the arrest of John the Baptist, is to call to himself companions. Father Benedict Ashley, O. P.: The preaching of the Reign of God becomes credible only when the persons who speak have themselves experienced life of love in a community. Jesus preached to the crowds out of the love he shared with his Apostles. Chrysostom: The Lord seized upon this hour in order to give example that we ought never to omit the service of God on account of occupations. The fishermen s obedience is marked by three virtues: they immediately responded; they demonstrated their readiness by leaving everything behind; 6

7 Lectio Divina Cont d A Prayerful Reading of Sacred Scripture The Gospel for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 4:12-23 and they followed Jesus perfection consists in following Jesus in faith, hope, and love. Gregory: Peter and Andrew had seen Christ work no miracle, had heard from him no word of promise of the eternal reward, yet at this single bidding of the Lord they forgot all that they had seem to possess, and immediately followed him. In which deed we ought rather to consider their wills than the amount of their property. The Lord does not weigh the sacrifice by how much is offered, but out of how much it is offered. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him (4:12-22). He called them Aquinas: He called them interiorly and exteriorly; to call interiorly is nothing other than to offer aid to the human mind when God wishes to convert us. Left their father: Read in light of Mt 8:21; 10:21; 21:31a; 23:9; 23:31. He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people (4:23). Father Cornelius a Lapide, S.J.: Christ did this both to confirm by these miracles his Gospel and the new, unheard-of law which he was bringing into the world. And also to heal the soul by healing the body, for once the body was healed, they believed because of this favor and miracle, and dedicated themselves to Christ. 7

8 Bulletin Reflection The watchword today is immediately. Peter and Andrew, James and John all respond immediately to the call of Christ. May I be as open to God s call and as ready to use my talent in His service as those first disciples were! Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards who work in parishbased advocacy groups to bring Gospel value and Catholic social teaching to the wider community. THE DEMON OF DESPONDENCY When the evil spirit comes roaring upon poor, weak men, they instantly fall down helpless, and he comes and tears them to pieces. But Saint Peter bids us be bold and vigilant, and to withstand bravely the assaults of the demon with the weapons of holy faith. One should act like the garrison of a beleaguered city which knows that the enemy s army is superior in number. On whatever side the ramparts are weakest, there is concentrated the strongest defense or the city and its defenders and treasurers are lost. So must each one of us carefully mark the weakest side of his character, for there without doubt the evil one will deliver his fiercest attack that is to say, where he finds the greatest tendency to vice. Sometimes the devil s readiest temptation is to despondency. He shows a man his native frailty and his sinfulness and tries to make him heavy-hearted on that account. And then he, as it were, roars in his ear: Are you so foolish as to spend your life in anguish and in penance? No! No! Live in joy. Enjoy your carnal pleasures. Almighty God will give you time for penance at the end of life. Have your own will, enjoy creatures while you are young and strong; when old age comes, then shall you become pious and serve God. Ah, dear children, what treacherous counsel is this. Be on your guard. Diligently watch while it is day, for soon eternal darkness will enshroud you. Regulate your life by no such false confidence, but rather by a wise understanding of what is a really God-guided life. And let there be no turning back. See to it that God alone shall rule you. FATHER JOHN TAULER, O.P. (+1361) was a German priest, a popular preacher, and a mystical theologian. 8

12 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months.
