THE PHARISEES LACK OF TRUE PERFECTION First, it must be known that every venial sin merits a punishment in this world or in the next, and for those who are lost through having died in the state of mortal sin, this punishment of venial sin will be eternal. Furthermore, venial sin weakens and enervates the soul; thus it renders it more feeble in resisting temptations and in doing good. It makes the fervor of charity grow cold. It retards spiritual progress. If many...do not attain true perfection it will not be necessary to seek another cause for this fact. Not keeping themselves with fear in the presence of God, they allow themselves to be easily carried away by useless and vain things. Venial sin is also a great obstacle to the familiar friendship of the soul with God, to the secret consolation of the Holy Spirit, to the interior taste of the divine goodness and suavity. Lastly, it easily disposes to mortal sin, as we have said, if one does not make an effort to correct it with constant vigilance. This meditation should produce in us three effects: a profound hatred of sin, a resolution to detest it by frequent acts of contrition, and a firm purpose to die rather than ever to commit it again. The Angelic Doctor exhorts us strongly to this hatred of sin. He says: If you love everything, exclude sin, fear nothing but sin. Love God alone and let nothing render you sad except sin. VENERABLE MOTHER JULIENNE MORELL, O. P. (+1653) was a Dominican nun born in Barcelona, Spain. She spoke several languages, and was the first woman to receive a Doctor of Laws Degree. 3

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 10, 2017 Ezekiel 33:7-9 Ps 95:1-2, Romans 13:8-10 Matthew 18:15-20

6 Lectio Divina A Prayerful Reading of Sacred Scripture The Gospel for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you (16:21-22). Began to show: notice show, not tell - manifestation vs. mere understanding. Earlier, on a high mountain, the devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence - an act of temptation (Mt 4:8). So too, Peter takes this showing of Jesus as a temptation to be spurned. But, ironically, now it is Peter who assumes the role of tempter by trying to prohibit Jesus. Other instances of rebuking Mt 19:13, when the disciples rebuke children to keep them away from Jesus, and Mt 20:31, when the crowds rebuke the blind men beseeching Jesus if heeded would prevent Jesus from bestowing his mercy. Another paradox: Peter s rebuke, God forbid! Literally means God be merciful. However, when Jesus rebukes the wind and the sea in Mt. 8:26, the crowds intent on publicizing his healings in Mt 12:16, his disciples to keep quiet about his being the Messiah (Mt 16:20), the demon in the possessed boy (Mt 17:18) - his rebukes are ordered to perfecting faith. In effect, Jesus shows us in advance the horror of his own wounds on Calvary to woo us to the reality of redemption. Suffer greatly from the elders Saint Thomas Aquinas: This caused a certain abjection and humiliation, for when someone suffers at the hand of common people, it is no great thing; but when at the hand of the wise and those who seem good, the humiliation is great. He turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do (16:23). He turned: Jesus reprimands Peter as he did Satan in the temptation (Mt 4:10) and the demons of Gadara (Mt 8:32). Get behind me Aquinas: That is, Follow me. Compare Peter s obstacle - literally, scandal - to Mt 18:6-9. Aquinas: When God withdrew his grace, Peter s humanity and weakness appeared to the point that Jesus called Peter Satan. In this way, the Lord sometimes wills perfect human beings to fall, that they may know their own humanity. To forbid the Passion: the ultimate satanic act. Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (16:24-25). Must deny himself: the Lord has already prepared his disciples for this teaching in Mt 5:29-30; 10:39. If we fail to deny ourselves, we may risk denying Jesus: Mt 10:33; 26:34, 35, 70, 72, 74. Father Cornelius a Lapide, S.J.: Deny himself means let him put away from him his own judgment and human affection. Let every believer deny his own imaginations, his own prurient urges, his own human reasoning, his own will; and let him direct it and conform it in all things to the will of God. For as in baptism we renounce Satan, and as it were abjure him, so ought we fully to deny, and as it were abjure ourselves, that is our lusts. For these are more inimical to us and our salvation than the devils themselves. For we dread the devil himself, but our lusts deceive us by their flattery, and profess to be our friends. Let us leave ourselves as we have made ourselves by sinning, and let us remain ourselves such we have been made by grace. Saint Gregory the Great: Let a believer deny himself so that a man should go away from himself and become a stranger to himself, yea, that he should leave off to be what he was and begin to be what he was not, and become as it were a new and another human man. 6

7 Lectio Divina Cont d A Prayerful Reading of Sacred Scripture The Gospel for the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 16:21-27 We must take up (Mt 9:6; 11:29; 14:20; 15:37; 27:32) the cross or else the gift of divine life may be taken from us (Mt 25:28-29). A Lapide: Jesus says: I your Captain will go before you; therefore, just follow me, because I will precede you, not only by my example, but by my help, and I will make you certain of victory and the crown, if only you will follow me and earnestly cooperate with my grace. An example of someone who wishes to save his life: the third servant in the parable of the talents: Mt 25:18, Will find it examples of finding : Mt 7:7-8; 11:29; 13:44; 18:13; 27:32. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? (16:26). Saint Basil the Great: Herein lies perfect self-denial: if someone has reached the point where he is not concerned in the least about his life, no matter how much talk there may be about death. For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct (16:27). The Son of Man will come: see Mt 25: CCC 294: The glory of God consists in the realization of [the] manifestation and communication of his goodness, for which the world was created. Repay: see Mt 6:4, 6, 18. A LIGHT UNTO MY PATH Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time -Bishop Robert Barron - - When Jesus speaks of the trials he will undergo in the Holy City, Peter, shockingly enough, rebukes him. It might be worthwhile to allow this image of the chief of the Apostles angrily remonstrating with the Lord to linger in your mind, for it is one of the clearest biblical images for sin. Disciples listen to Jesus; sinners tell him what to do. Disciples obey the Master; sinners correct him. In one of his very first speeches recorded in the Gospels, Jesus tells his followers, Metanoiete, which could be literally rendered as go beyond the mind that you have or change your way of thinking. In the wake of Peter s rebuke, Jesus says something very similar, Get behind me, Satan! You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. So what precisely is the difference between these two frames of reference? To think in the human manner is to follow an instinct toward self-protection. To think in the divine manner is to follow an instinct toward selfdonation. The old mind flees from the cross, but the new mind seeks it out. Do we want to save our lives or do we want to give them away? Everything that we say and do will be conditioned ultimately by the way in which we answer that fundamental question. When Jesus speaks, directly and concretely, of the cross he wants us to take up, do we rebuke him? If so, we have some more spiritual work to do. 7

13 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new link is You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped. God bless and thank you so much.
