4 New Pastoral Letter Commemorates Fiftieth Anniversary of Humane Vitae Fifty years ago, on July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an Encyclical Letter entitled Humanae Vitae, On Human Life. On October 14, 2018, Pope Francis will canonize his predecessor as Pope Saint Paul VI. In this anniversary year, Bishop John O. Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre has issued a Pastoral Letter entitled The Supreme Gift: The Gift of Life, commemorating the encyclical of this soon-to-be-canonized saint. This teaching of the late Holy Father is in many ways more important today than at any time before. In his letter, Bishop Barres wants to teach the people of the diocese the important truths of Humanae Vitae, because these truths very much need to be reexamined today in light of the problems we face in our time. Please take a copy of The Supreme Gift home, read it, and discuss it as married couples and as families. Bishop Barres says: Understanding the teaching of Humanae Vitae, believing it, and living it, is one of the first and most important answers to the crisis of our time. I truly believe that the future Pope Saint Paul VI wrote the letter more for our times than even for his own. Today, it can become the first step in repairing the injury between men and women, husbands and wives, parents and children, the family and society. At the Mass of Beatification of Pope Paul VI in 2014, Pope Francis said of his predecessor: When we look to this great Pope, this courageous Christian, this tireless apostle, we cannot but say in the sight of God a word as simple as it is heartfelt and important: thanks! Thank you, our dear and beloved Pope Paul VI! Thank you for your humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church! In [his] humility the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth: before the advent of a secularized and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom and at times alone to the helm of the barque of Peter, while never losing his joy and his trust in the Lord. Visit drvc.org for an electronic copy in English and Spanish. Thank you. Whoever Does the Will of God Christian life can only be a vast generosity towards a God who is as fragile as he is precious, and who can appear only if we allow him to show through us. This generosity, expected of us, gives to the whole Christian life its most admirable character, since it turns us away from making of Christianity a religion of our personal salvation. It is no longer a question of ourselves: it is a question of God surrendered to us, whose life is given over into our hands and who touches us with his light and his grace so that we may be his torch bearers, so that we may communicate this incomparable friendship to all our human brothers, so that we may stir in their heart the echo of his tenderness and that, through us, they may perceive his face. That is what we must ask ourselves so that this divine Motherhood of which the Lord himself speaks may be fulfilled in us: Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and my sister, and my mother. FATHER MAURICE ZUNDEL (+1975) was a Swiss mystic, poet, philosopher, liturgist, and author. 4

8 Lectio Divina A Prayerful Reading of Sacred Scripture The Gospel for the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 6:30-34 The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught (6:30). This is the only time in the Gospel of Mark when the disciples are called Apostles : they have been sent out on mission. Pseudo-Jerome: For they return to the fountain-head whence the streams flow; those who are sent by God always offer up thanks for those things which they have received. He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat (6:31). The deserted place reminds us of other desolate locations in Mark: 1:3-5, where John the Baptist calls people to repentance; 1:12-13, where Jesus undergoes temptation; 1:35, 45, where Jesus goes to pray. Saint Ambrose the bread of life is offered in a lonely place: The bread of life is most valued, not by the idle, or those who live in crowded cities encompassed within the honors of the world. It is rather most cherished by those who seek Christ in a desert place. Adrienne von Speyr: It is as if Jesus is choosing them again, taking them to himself, at first not at all to send them into a visible mission but, rather, to have them with him in a quiet place. They are to take a vacation together, but a vacation in discipleship. Come with me. It is a new, Follow me, as he said this to each one of them, to Peter several times, and as he says it now before the time of rest. They are to be with him in solitude and learn to follow the Lord in rest. This is something new, which apparently has nothing to do with their mission until now and yet which is to give them the strength to begin again. Saint Anselm: Come now, turn aside for a while from your daily employment, escape for a moment from the tumult of your thoughts. Put aside your weighty cares, let your burdensome distractions wait, free yourself awhile for God and rest awhile in him. Enter the inner chamber of your soul, shut out everything except God and that which can help you in seeking him; and when you have shut the door, seek him. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place (6:32). Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection: What can be more agreeable to God than to withdraw thus many times a day from the things of man to retire into ourselves and adore him interiorly; in addition, these interior retreats to God gradually free us by destroying that self-love which can exist only among our fellow human beings. Servant of God Elisabeth Leseur: To pray is to live in constant, calm, strong, and lasting union with God, to look at everything from God s point of view, and to be so peacefully anchored in eternity that annoyances, unavoidable struggles, and continual activity have no ability to disturb us or to drag us down. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them (6:33). Theophylact of Ohrid (+1107): So, you, do not wait for Christ till he himself calls you, but outrun him and come before him. 8

9 Lectio Divina Cont d A Prayerful Reading of Sacred Scripture The Gospel for the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 6:30-34 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things (6:34). Catena in Marcum (5th cent.): For indeed these people were in such a state that nobody was able to teach them anything beneficial for the soul. It was for this reason in particular that they were forced to follow after the Lord, as if he alone were the only one capable of leading them to better things: and, delighted at their zeal, he had pity upon them, and he gave them the benefit of his teaching, offering to them a spiritual dining-table and a generous banquet which is everlasting. Other instances in which Jesus is moved with pity: Mk 1;41 toward the leper, whom he heals; Mk 8:2 toward the four thousand, whom he miraculously feeds; Mk 9:22 toward the possessed boy, from whom he casts out the demon. Saint Bede the Venerable: Jesus tested the crowd s faith, and having done so he gave it a fitting reward. He sought out a lonely place to see if they would take the trouble to follow him. For their part, they showed how concerned they were for their salvation by the effort they made in going along the deserted road, not on donkeys or in carts of various kinds, but on foot. In return Jesus welcomed those weary, ignorant, sick, and hungry people, instructing, healing, and feeding them as a kindly Savior and physician, and so letting them know how pleased he is by believers devotion to him. Mary Healy: As shepherdless sheep are likely to scatter, get lost, and quickly become vulnerable to predatory beasts, so when leadership fails, God s people are likely to stray away from fidelity to him and become prey to their enemies. Only God himself can adequately guide his people and provide for their needs. Jesus teaching is healing, since it liberates people from their captivity to evil. At the same time, his teaching is feeding, since by proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom Jesus is satisfying their spiritual hunger. Giving Our Life as a Ransom You are having to bear a large, weighty cross. But what a great happiness for you! Have confidence. For if God, who is all goodness, continues to make you suffer he will not test you more than you can bear. The cross is a sure sign that he loves you. I can assure you of this, that the greatest proof that we are loved by God is when we are despised by the world and burdened with crosses, i.e., when we are made to endure the privation of things we could rightly claim; when our holiest wishes meet with opposition; when we are afflicted with distressing and hurtful insults; when we are subjected to persecution, to having our actions misinterpreted by good people and by those who are our best friends; and when we suffer illnesses which are particularly repugnant, etc. But why should I tell you things that you know better than I, for you understand and experience all of them. If Christians only knew the value of the cross, they would walk a hundred miles to obtain it, because enclosed in the beloved cross is true wisdom, and that is what I am looking for night and day more eagerly than ever. O good cross, come to us for God s greater glory! This is my frequent prayer dictated by my heart in spite of my weakness and my many infidelities. After Jesus, our only love, I place my whole trust in the cross. SAINT LOUIS GRIGNION DE MONTFORT (+1716) was a great French missionary preacher especially renowned for fostering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 9

When He saw the people gathered, however, He put His needs aside to meet the needs of others. Sometimes, as good stewards, we are called to do the same. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who find true joy in placing the needs of others before their own desires - an act of good stewardship. 13 Vocation Prayer Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Christians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. 15 THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new link is You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped. God bless and thank you so much.
