3 Happy New Year! With the close of 2017, we reflect back on the many blessings here at St. Francis, as well as some significant losses. With each life we encounter, we can know that God s hand is upon each one of us as we travel this journey together. As the new year begins, we look forward to what God has in store for us here at St. Francis and we will keep you posted as to our schedule of services throughout the year, the calendar of events for gatherings and fellowship, and other news that s important to you and our community. 4 Message from our Rector Happy New Year! This joyous and eager greeting continues to break forth even through chattering teeth. There is an excitement, a feeling of hope-filled expectation that accompanies a new year. With the dawn of 2018, we at St. Francis begin this year with holy expectation. We Christians, through the power of the Holy Spirit, do know the power of living into hope-filled lives. Our Season of Discernment with 7 cottage meetings and over 50 parishioners participating enabled us to listen one to another. A sincere thank you to all who were involved in this important process. As the reports are finalized, your Master Plan Committee and your Vestry are reading, praying, and planning about where we as a community are hearing the Holy Spirit call us. Your continued prayers for our parish are cherished. At the same time, part of our common life and prayer life must be focused on thanksgiving for all we, as a portion of the Body of Christ in this part of God s vineyard, enjoy. In this newsletter there are several thank you notes to our community for care to one another and to others in the wider community. With a genuine sense of thanksgiving, for what do we want to begin this year in thanksgiving to God and to each other? I know that I am most grateful for all who worked so hard to make this Christmastide and all our worship throughout this time beautiful and Spirit-filled. Despite the challenge of Advent 4 and Christmas Eve services on the same day, our Nave was gorgeously decorated and our music glorious. In the midst of what could have been great confusion moving Sunday morning into the Children s Chapel, members were here Saturday and Sunday to help with transitions and directions as well as participating in the services. To all our staff and all our musicians, to all who helped with greening the Nave, to all who served at the various services and to all who came to raise their voices in praise to New Born King: thank you, thank you, thank you! Most especially thank you to our Great God who loves us so much that the Divine Son came and lived as one of us. Let our resolution for 2018 be to heed and to dwell into Jesus call us to love one another as he has loved us. Lou 4

5 E Y C The Youth gathered after the 10 am service on December 10, and worked to gift pack the Santa for Seniors donations collected by St. Francis. Then on the first day of their Christmas break, six of us went to see the movie The Star. This animated version of the Christmas story proved to be a fun outing for all. Looking ahead in January, there are two Winter Session offerings at Grace Point Camp. Both are full weekend opportunities for fun and fellowship with Youth from around our Diocese. Camp charges are $125 per camper. St. Francis will help cover the costs for any youth in our parish who would like to attend. Register online at gracepointcamp.org: January is for ages 9 th 12 th grades February 2 4 is for ages 6 th 8 th grades Summer Mission Trip to Heifer International Sunday, June 3 Friday, June 8 Join us as we travel to Arkansas to The Heifer Ranch. While there, we will live and work in community where animals and gardens are nurtured before being shared with developing communities internationally. We will travel with other Youth from the Chattanooga area as all the ChattEY churches that are participating. Cost is $350. Scholarships are available. Please contact Lou as soon as possible to reserve your spot for this wonderful mission opportunity. 5

7 Stewardship Well, we made it through another year. Another batch of Holiday festivities celebrating with friends and family, and the grand celebration of the birth of the Christ child. As we begin the New Year let us not forget those who may not be celebrating this time of year. Those who may be hurting physically or emotionally; who may be having a difficult time with the loss of a loved one, health issues, loss of job, or some other challenge or crisis. Stewardship is not just a financial gift, but also our words and actions allowing us to help others in our community. During the start of this new year, let us all pray that we may be an instrument of God s love and be attentive to where we can be helpful to those in need. Often times we are unaware of others situations. Let s stop and take a breath and ask God to help us preach the Gospel each and every day, and when necessary use words. 11 St. Francis Week with Family Promise January 16 18, 2018 We need volunteers to help provide dinner for the families or stay overnight Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Contact Stacy at Our Former Youth Director, Spencer Cantrell, is scheduled to be ordained at the close of the Diocesan Convention on February 10, during the celebration of Holy Eucharist. Please keep Spencer in your prayers as he prepares for his ordination. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 2017 FAITH HOUSE BUILD St. Francis Work Day Saturday, February 3 Our group enjoyed starting the build back in October. We are scheduled to work again February 3. 16 Looking ahead. Lent begins Ash Wednesday - February 14 (Yes, we know.) We ll have details on all services and gatherings for the Lenten Season in the February Issue of The Hoot Newsletter. Look for the next Hoot the first week in February! 4 Our Annual Soup Drive begins January 14 leading up to the Super Bowl Game February 4th. We will be collecting non-perishable soup to help stock the food panty at Samaritan Center. Please bring in canned or dried soup January 14 through February 4. Thank you! 16
