2 FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY (Isaiah 60:1-6; Eph 3:2-6; Matthew 2:1-12) There is a story about a parish children s Christmas pageant from a few years ago. Everyone was selected for the variety of roles and the costumes were all prepared. There was lots of practice, but as is often the case when young children take the lead, one never knows exactly what to expect. Such was the case that day as the Magi proceeded down the church s main aisle, headed toward the manger and the Christ Child. Upon arriving, the leader of three turned to the congregation, and proclaimed in a loud voice, We are the Magi, and behold, we come bearing gifts of gold, common sense and fur! The Magi brought to Christ the gifts they could bring: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Today s celebration of the Epiphany should encourage each of us to reflect on the gifts we can bring to Christ, so that he may put them to use in building his kingdom here on earth. The gifts don t have to be wildly expensive, but they must come from the heart of who we are, and must be rooted in the unique way that each of us has been fashioned by God. Consider Dorothy, who at eighty-four, was a widow who had grown tired of only talking about the world s problems. She wondered what she could do to make a difference. She had heard about the plight of her community s homeless, and decided that what she could do is to make them sandwiches. And so she did, taking the sandwiches to the local park where she knew a number of the homeless gathered daily. Engaging them in conversation, she discovered that many of the homeless wanted to work, but didn t have a way to make or receive phone calls or to receive mail regularly. Some of them shared that even if they were fortunate enough to arrange a job interview, they didn t have good clothes to wear or a place to shower. She took their concerns to her friends, and in a short while, with all of them working together, they were able to secure safe shelter, have a general telephone, a general mailbox, a clothes closet that made available gently used clothing for free, and a place that would eventually be able to serve three simple meals each day. Dorothy is now ninety-four, and still going strong. The place she and her friends helped to create now assists hundreds of people annually. What is the most valuable gift that each of us has to offer? A sense of humor? An ability to pray with others? Kindness, gentleness and patience? An ability to fix cars or computers? Musical talent? The ability to make others feel welcome? People such as Dorothy help us to know that each of us has a gift that can be offered to Christ. In making that concrete choice, we can help to make God s presence known, and so the Epiphany continues. In a few short moments, we will present our gifts of bread and wine, as well as our monetary gifts. As we do so, Christ will lovingly accept them and then return them to us, transformed into his body and blood. This is all the nourishment we need to continue to love and serve the Lord. As we begin this New Year together, may your journey be faith-filled, full of happiness and blessed with good health. * * * * * * * Father Tony LITURGY AND LIFE How does our parish help spread the news of Christ throughout our community? What does it mean to you that God became flesh? When has someone helped your realize that God is in our midst?

4 THE GIFTS OF EPIPHANY Gold, frankincense and myrrh may be thought of as prophesying Jesus future. Gold was a gift for Kings; frankincense (an ancient air purifier and perfume), was offered to God in Temple worship (Ex. 30:37); and myrrh (an oriental remedy for intestinal worms in infants), was used by the High Priest as an anointing oil (Ex. 30:23), and to prepare bodies for burial. These gifts were not only expensive but portable. Perhaps Joseph sold the gifts to finance the Holy Family s trip to Egypt. The gifts might have been God s way of providing for the journey that lay ahead. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundredyear project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as an exceptional work of human creative genius. This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TEMPER AND PRIDE Temper is what gets most of us into trouble. Pride is what keeps us there. Anonymous END OF THE YEAR WRAP-UP Each month we take a second collection, one week for the upkeep and repair of our church building, and one week to help bring down the building debt for the construction of Donworth Center. The first two wise men got down from their camels and offered their precious gifts to the Baby. He declined them. When the Baby Jesus declined the gift of the third also, the exasperated wise man asked, "Then what do you want?" The Child Jesus answered quickly and with a warm smile, "Your big cow!" * * * * * While they were talking about the story of the three wise men, a woman asked her parish priest this question, "Do you know why God gave the star to the wise men?" When he professed his ignorance, she told him: "God knows men are too proud to ask directions. If there had been three wise women instead of three wise men, they would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and given some practical gifts! * * * * * A helicopter was flying around above Seattle yesterday when an electrical malfunction disabled all the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position and course to steer to the airport. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign, and held it in the helicopter's window. The pilot's sign said "Where am I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "You are in a helicopter." The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to Sea-Tac airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how the "You are in a helicopter" sign helped determine their position. The pilot responded, "I knew that had to be the Microsoft building because, similar to their help-lines, they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer."
