2 A Note from Fr. Lawrence: Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. A fun word, epiphany, it simply means to reveal. Today the Lord has revealed himself to all the nations - as attested to by the magi that come to visit Him. They are also known as kings or wise men. These magi represent that the entire world rejoices in Jesus' birth, and that everyone is called to know him. "They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." (Matt 2:10-11) The magi wander with gifts from a far off land because the grace of God has somehow broken into their world. Jesus' birth is a big deal. In fact it is the biggest deal. God the Son has come to save the world from its darkness and sin. How blessed are we to have (continued from previous column) such a wonderful and amazing God! Having our loving God in our lives should make us want to give gifts as well, like the Magi. But what can we offer? I think there is nothing better to give back to God praise and worship, and then to help others come to know God and love God too. So lets pray for all those out there that have never heard the Gospel message. Pray for all those who have decided to reject it. And most importantly, pray and witness to your faith where ever you are and whatever you are doing. May the God who loves us so much grant us the best graces as we begin 2018! 4 This weekend, Michael James Mette will be sharing his music with our community. Michael is a Catholic performing artist who travels the country with his wife of 18 years, Michelle and their seven young children: Gabby (13), Trinity (12), Charity (10), Cecilia (9), Michael Jr. (7), Truman (2), and Fidelity (newborn). His music is a modern reflection of his faith blending alternative rock with faith based lyrics. The concert will be 90 minutes and will include performances from the whole family, lights, video, music and testimonies by Michael & Michelle. Please consider attending the concert and supporting this ministry. Concert will be 3pm Sunday January 7th in the Social Hall. Cost: free will donation Thank you to all who helped with our Christmas Angels!! Like the Magi, let us offer Jesus our gifts on this feast of Epiphany. (a) The first gift might be friendship with God. After all, the whole point of Christmas is that God s Son became one of us to redeem us and call us friends. God wants our friendship in the form of wholehearted love and devotion. (b) A second gift might be friendship with others. This kind of friendship can be costly. The price it exacts is vulnerability and openness to others. The good news, however, is that, in offering friendship to others, we will receive back many blessings. (c) A third gift might be the gift of reconciliation. This gift repairs damaged relationships. It requires honesty, humility, understanding, forgiveness and patience. (d) The fourth gift of this season is the gift of peace: seeking God s peace in our own lives through prayer, the Sacramental life and daily meditation on the Word of God. It is out of humble gratitude that we give Him from the heart our gifts of worship, prayer, singing, possessions, and time. As we give our insignificant, little gifts to God, the good news is that God accepts them! Like the Magi offering their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, we offer what we have, from the heart, in response to what that Child has given to us - Himself. January 28th Let us conclude with a 19 th century English carol, Christina Rosetti s A Christmas Carol, which begins, In the bleak midwinter. The carol sums up, in its last stanza, the nature of "giving to the Christ Child. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I could give a Lamb. If I were a wise man, I could do my part. What I can I give Him? Give Him my heart!
