1 St. Stephen Parish April 10, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter A t that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, am going fishing. They said to him, We also will come with you. So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, Children, have you caught anything to eat? They answered him, No. So he said to them, Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something. So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish you just caught. Psalm I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading In his vision John sees all in heaven and on earth give honor and glory to the one on the throne and to the Lamb (Revelation 5:11-14). Gospel Jesus appears to the disciples by the sea of Tiberias (John 21:1-19 [1-14]). 3 Dear Parishioners of St. Stephen: As the Easter season proceeds so does this Year of Mercy. We are all aware by now that Pope Francis has called for this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. An argument can be made to show that mercy is a primordial sign of a healthy civilization. The more merciful we as individuals and as a church become the more we grow as effective signs of God s action in our lives. Recently I came across a story that spoke to me of the preeminence and centrality of mercy in life and in culture. It was written by the Dominican, Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P. It is reported that a student once asked the famous anthropologist Margaret Mead, What is the earliest sign of civilization in any given culture? According to the story, the questioner likely expected Mead to say a tool, a weapon, a piece of pottery, an artifact of domestic life, etc. Instead, the anthropologist answered: A healed femur (the big leg bone between the hip and the knee). A healed femur shows that someone took care of the injured person. Someone else had to step in to carry out the work of hunting and gathering until the individual s fractured leg healed. For Mead, the first sign of civilization was the evidence of compassion. I pray we may grow as a parish full of compassion and mercy and thus become more effective signs of God s presence in our world Because of Easter break not everyone in the parish heard the news I shared with the community last Sunday. The Archdiocese has named the new Pastor for our parish. His name is Fr. Tony LaTorre. He is presently completing two terms (12 years) as the Pastor of St. Philip s parish in the Noe Valley district of San Francisco. Congratulations, Fr. Tony, and welcome to our wonderful parish. You will love it here. On another note: the Archdiocese has asked me to be the Administrator at St. Patrick s parish in Larkspur, across the Bay in Marin County for just two months, July and August. When I complete that assignment I can begin my retirement. Where I will live at that point has yet to be determined. Please contact Mary Molly if you plan to attend. Thanks. REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, countless in number from heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus arrest, trial, and crucifixion. In these short chapters Keating reflects on various subjects having to do with the contemplative experience. Fr. Ryan will comment on these reflections and try to help us to deepen our own spiritual journey. Did you ever think of silence as quiet? They are not the same. 6 April 6, 2016 Dear St. Stephen Families, We are writing to let you know about a very important long-term project that is beginning in our parish and school community. We are all, of course, aware that we live, work, pray and attend school in earthquake country here in the Bay Area. Most often we do not give another thought to that reality and we go on with our daily business. Every so often, however, new information comes up around an issue, and as a result actions are taken. With that idea in mind, the Archdiocese of San Francisco recently provided extensive engineering seismic analysis for all of our San Francisco Catholic schools. Knowing that all of our schools were constructed over forty-plus years or more, the archdiocese is attempting to assist all our schools in setting up long-term goals for each of the school facilities. Each of our school buildings went through the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake with little or no damage, which speaks to the integrity of our facilities for that specific earthquake. As responsible stewards of our schools students, faculty, and staff, however, we want to strengthen the structures of our school buildings to increase the safety of all parties in any future earthquakes. Over the coming months, each of our San Francisco Catholic schools will begin to formulate a longterm strategic plan to address and fund the work that has been noted in the engineering seismic reports. Once the strategic plans are developed and finalized, a timeline for the work to begin will then be proposed. In most cases, we anticipate that the work will take place over a period of two, three or more years. In order to avoid interrupting the students academic programs during the school year, we expect that the work can be done during summer vacations. Over the next few months, we and our parish and school committee will be meeting with the engineers to put together our parish and school strategic plan. We will keep everyone informed as this plan is being developed, and we certainly welcome your input and professional advice along the way. We are extremely grateful to our hardworking Women's Guild for their phenomenal fundraising. Their efforts have allowed us to save money for the past several years to fund this retrofit when the time came. We thank you for your support of Catholic education over the years and ask that you join us in prayer as we begin this journey together for our children today and the future generations of children who will be educated in our Catholic schools here in San Francisco.
