1 St. Stephen Parish June 5, 2016 The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time J esus journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, Do not weep. He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, Young man, I tell you, arise! The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, crying out A great prophet has arisen in our midst, and God has visited his people. 3 Note from Deacon Rory: Dear Parishioners, Just a short note to let you know that I will be traveling to New York in May and June to conduct mission appeals for the diocese of Miao in India. I will be in New York for mission appeals on May 27-30, June 10-13, June and June Miao Diocese is a remote Diocese in the North Eastern corner of India. Tucked away into a corner wedged between Myanmar, Tibet, China and Bhutan, this land is the home of many tribes. It has a unique history of having been a forbidden land for Christians. In 2005 December Pope Benedict XVI created the Diocese of Miao. If you could have a look at and the link: you can have a fair idea of the place, people and work. Please keep me in prayer as I travel to churches in New York making mission appeals on behalf of this remote far away missionary outpost of the Catholic Church. Archdiocese of San Francisco Free Citizenship Legal Workshop on June 11 th, 2016 We want to cordially extend the invitation to all your parishioners, who may be interested and could benefit from this opportunity, to attend a Free Citizenship Workshop on Saturday, June 11 th at 9:30AM to 12:30PM in San Francisco (711 Eddy Street, San Francisco, CA 9419) Our immigrant parishioners will be able to obtain free legal assistance to prepare and file their citizenship forms, and also with petitioning for a fee waiver if needed. There are tens of thousands of immigrants eligible to become citizens, but who have not applied yet due to lack of information, the high cost of legal assistance or the economic means to pay for fees. Research shows that becoming a U.S. Citizen can potentially bring a number of benefits and increased stability to immigrant families. It is our hope that all our parishes and schools can help pass this information along to parishioners so that as many families as possible can have the chance to benefit from the opportunities provided at the FREE Citizenship Workshop on June 11th. The relics will be at the National Shrine of St. Francis in September and November. Our Building Improvement Program We are nearing completion of a major re-lamping project of the interior and exterior of our church. This has been a work in progress behind the scenes inside our church for a number of months. We have now replaced 100% of our lighting with long lasting, energy efficient LED products. Not only will this reduce power consumption and maintenance, it will improve our interior church environment and increase safety around the perimeter of our campus. Thank you for your patience.

6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Unless Professor Einstein s theory of relativity can be translated into any useful kind of time-travel, most of our clues about life in the early church will have to come from ancient letters and ancient prayer texts. A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for example, an understanding of what presbyters actually did. We have such a prayer from the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our modern prayers derive a great deal from his, some of the practices of the ancient church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen by the people, and the other bishops merely consented. Presbyters, by contrast, seem to have been chosen by the bishops. This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers. It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by the time of the fourth-century church s growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the presbyters at the outlying eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early bishops desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of all celebrations of the Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to their reluctance to delegate a sacramental ministry to the presbyters. July Workshop on Starting a Parish Green Team SFArch.org/Green The archdiocese is exploring ways to support parishes that have a desire to become more environmentally aware and responsible. The April 23 workshop in San Francisco, attended by more than 100 people, demonstrated a strong interest in this effort, an outgrowth of the Papal encyclical Laudato Si. (Read the Catholic San Francisco story recapping the workshop here.) Parishes who are interested in a follow-up workshop to learn about forming parish Green Teams, please visit SFArch.org/Green to indicate interest and give input. A July workshop is envisioned. SMALL PLEASURES Little things seem nothing, but they give peace, like those meadow flowers which individually seem odorless but all together perfume the air. Georges Bernanos HOPE AND LIFE Today s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. High School Boys Vocation Discernment Camp Lafayette Retreat Center Fr. David Schunk, Director of Vocations or vocations@sfarch.org This camp is for Catholic boys in the Archdiocese of San Francisco who will be enrolled in high school (public or private) in the fall of The purpose of the camp is to expose our young men to the various Christian vocations of life, particularly vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. There will be some talks and presentations on vocations as well as time for fun and prayer. The camp will begin the afternoon of July 31 and end the evening of August 2. The leaders will be seminarians studying for the archdiocese and parish youth leaders. The camp will take place at the Diocese of Oakland Youth Retreat Center in Lafayette, California. Families are asked to contribute $50 for the camp but scholarships are available for families in need. Due to limited availability of space, not all applicants may be accepted.
