2 May 13, 2018 The Ascension of our Lord Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, the account we heard in today s Gospel: Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. We celebrate knowing that where Jesus has gone, he is enabling us to go as well. Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, famously said, One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Although that step out of the spaceship was just one small step for him, it had amazing significance for the human race. Neil Armstrong walking on the moon meant that it was possible for others to walk on the moon. As astonishing as Neil Armstrong s action was, Jesus ascension into heaven is what truly has significance for all of humanity and creation. Through the fall of Adam and Eve, all of mankind was separated from God. But through Jesus life, passion, death and resurrection, he paid the price for sin and enabled us to be in union with God through him. Through the Ascension, Jesus has made it possible for sinners like us to enter heaven and abide in God s presence. Just as Neil Armstrong overcame limits, which allowed man to walk on the moon, so has Jesus overcome death allowing us to reach heaven. But this is no easy journey. Just as Neil Armstrong went through training, so do we need to be trained, as it were; formed as disciples of Jesus Christ. In doing so we become more like him and become more and more able to enter the glories of heaven. There is no chance we could ever accomplish this on our own but we are not alone. Jesus has gone before us to show us the way, and sent us the Holy Spirit to be our Helper and Paraclete. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to follow the command Jesus gives us before he ascends in today s Gospel: Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. We are his disciples, and he has shown us the way. Let us follow him with joy and thanksgiving. Next week, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit marking the end of the Easter Season. I pray that these Easter weeks have been a strong spiritual renewal for you as we approach the Summer months. Thank you for praying with us today. Have you reflected on your call to proclaim the Gospel? IT MUST WORK! A beautiful old story tells of how Jesus, after his Ascension into Heaven, was surrounded by the holy angels who began to enquire about his work on earth. Jesus told them about his birth, life, preaching, death and Resurrection, and how he had accomplished the salvation of the world. The angel Gabriel asked, Well, now that you are back in Heaven, who will continue your work on earth?" Jesus said, "While I was on earth, I gathered a group of people around me who believed in me and loved me. They will continue to spread the Gospel and carry on the work of the Church. Gabriel was perplexed. "You mean Peter, who denied you thrice and all the rest who ran away when you were crucified? You mean to tell us that you left them to carry on your work? And what will you do if this plan doesn't work?" Jesus said, "I have no other plan -- it must work." Truly, Jesus has no other plan than to depend on the efforts of his followers!

3 HAPPY MOTHER S DAY! Today we thank our mothers, pray for them and honor them by celebrating Mother s Day and by offering our mothers on the altar of God. The origin of Mother s Day. Anna M. Jarvis ( ), first suggested the national observance of an annual day honoring all mothers because she had loved her own mother so dearly. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, Miss Jarvis gave a carnation (her mother s favorite flower), to each person who attended. Within the next few years, the idea of a day to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mother s Day was observed in a number of large cities in the U.S. On May 9, 1914, by an act of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother s Day. He established the day as a time for public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country. By then it had become customary to wear white carnations to honor departed mothers and red to honor the living, a custom that continues to this day. Proverbs 31:10-31 presents us with God s description and estimation of what a godly wife and mother looks like. The role of mothers in our lives: This is a day to admit gratefully the fact that none of us is able to return, in the same measure, all the love that our mothers have given us. Their influence on their children is so great that it affects the children throughout their lives. Our mothers not only gave us birth but nursed us, nurtured us, trained us in their religious beliefs and practices, taught us good manners and ideal behavior, disciplined us as best as they could and made us good citizens of our country, our Church and our society. There is a beautiful Spanish proverb: "An ounce of mother is better than a pound of clergy." Hence, it is highly proper for us to express our love and gratitude to our mothers by our presence, gifts and prayers on Mother s Day. We offer this Eucharistic celebration on Mother s Day for all the mothers in our congregation, whether they are alive or have gone for their eternal reward. The word mom is synonymous with sacrificial, agápe love in its purest form, as given by Jesus in his farewell speech: "Love one another as I have loved you. Hence, let us lavish our love on our mothers and express our gratitude for them in the form of fervent prayers offered for them before God. Remember that a Christian has two mothers: On Mother s Day, let us acknowledge the truth that we have two mothers: our earthly mother and our Heavenly Mother, the Mother of Jesus. The Catholic Church proclaims the great nobility of the Mother of Jesus, Mary most holy, and presents her as the supreme model for all mothers. On this Mother s Day, presenting all mothers on the altar, let us sing the beautiful song we sing on the Feast of the Presentation, Gentle woman, peaceful dove, teach us wisdom, teach us love. Let us show our love and appreciation for both of our mothers, and let us ask our Heavenly Mother to take care of our earthly mothers. We need to be persons for others, sacrificing our time, talents and lives for them, as our mothers are. Marriage is a journey!! 6 CATHOLIC CHARITIES SUNDAY May 20 Next Sunday, May 20 is Catholic Charities Sunday. This annual second collection asks parishioners to live their faith by generously supporting the good work of Catholic Charities, the social services arm of the Catholic Church in our local area. We are asked to put our faith into action and change a life for the better today by contributing to Catholic Charities. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. SOME HUMOR The Ascension mission to preach the Gospel: After attending a convention led by Billy Graham a woman wrote to him. Dear Sir, I feel that God is calling me to preach the Gospel. But the trouble is that I have twelve children. What shall I do? The televangelist replied: Dear Madam, I am delighted to hear that God has called you to preach the Gospel. I am even more delighted to hear that He has already provided you with a congregation in your own home. * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Ascension walk-out: There was a longwinded pastor who preached Salvation history from Genesis to Revelation in every sermon. On the feast of Ascension as he reached Isaiah, he remarked that the prophet said nothing about the Ascension of Our Lord. He asked his audience, What shall we do with him? One old man in the front seat said, He can have my seat, Father, I am leaving. A ridiculous story with religious significance has been making the rounds lately. It is about a pilot and three passengers a Boy Scout, a priest, and an atomic scientist in a plane that develops engine trouble in mid-flight. The pilot rushes back to the passenger compartment and exclaims, "The plane is going down! We only have three parachutes, and there are four of us! I have a family waiting for me at home. I must survive!" With that, he grabs one of the parachutes and jumps out of the plane. The atomic scientist jumps to his feet at this point and declares, "I am the smartest man in the world. It would be a great tragedy if my life were snuffed out!" With that, he also grabs a parachute and exits the plane. With an alarmed look on his face, the priest says to the Boy Scout, "My son, I have no family. I am ready to meet my Maker. You are still young with much ahead of you. You take the last parachute. At this point, the Boy Scout interrupts the priest, "Hold on, Father. Don't say any more. We're all right. The world's smartest man just jumped out of the plane wearing my knapsack!" For such smart people who do not believe in an afterlife, today s feast of the Ascension seems a myth. But it is the guarantee of their Resurrection and Ascension to heaven for Christians. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother s Day is over. Mothering Sunday was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their Mother Church. Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
