2 The Fifth Sunday of Easter In all honesty, we must admit that we cannot do it all by ourselves. We will not be useful, productive or successful unless we go about our tasks and accomplish our mission in the power of Jesus Christ. But really, that is a good thing! Having Jesus Christ, Spirit-filled and risen from the dead on our side, and empowered by the gifts of God's Holy Spirit, is what truly gives value to whatever we do. We are branches of the main vine, as Jesus tells us in today's Gospel account: I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. If you live in me and I in you, he tells us, you will live a life of meaning, purpose, direction and infinite value. We, as Catholic Christians, are called to apply the powers we have, powers that come from God, to heal, redeem and thereby sanctify not only in our own individual lives but in the world around us. In our commonly shared life of faith in Jesus Christ, we truly have the ability to make change happen in the world. We have God s commitment: his covenant to be with us no matter what. And to help us be a part of accomplishing his work, we have God's Presence among us, even within us, when we receive the body and blood of Jesus. We live in him, and he in us. May our lives bear much fruit, for the glory of God and the good of the world. As we bring the month of April to a close (already!), and look forward to May, dedicated to our Blessed Mother, we give special thanks to all the beautiful and joyous things that were celebrated here at Saint Stephens this month. May God s blessings be upon all of you. Father Tony * * * * * * * LITURGY AND LIFE When has the work of the Holy Spirit defied your expectations? How does our parish help the community recognize that they are to love in deed and truth as today s readings from the First Letter of Saint John states? How does the fruit you bear glorify God? PRUNING OUR CHRISTIAN LIVES Cutting out of our lives everything that is contrary to the spirit of Jesus and renewing our commitment to Christian ideals in our lives every day, is the first type of self-imposed pruning expected of us. A second means of pruning is to practice self-control over our evil inclinations, sinful addictions and aberrations. Cordial mingling with people of different cultures, races, religions and orientations in our neighborhood and society also enables us to prune away our selfish and prejudicial tendencies as we treat others in the society with Christian charity and openness. In addition, Jesus prunes, purifies and strengthens us by allowing us to face pain and suffering, contradictions and difficulties with the courage of our Christian convictions. The four Gospels teach us how to become true disciples of Jesus and how to abide in him as branches abide in the main trunk of the vine, drawing their life from it. Personal and liturgical prayers, frequenting of the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation, daily, meditative reading of Scripture, and the loving forgiveness of others enable us to abide in Jesus, the true Vine, as fruit-bearing branches.

4 NO WATER! In the late 1980s, a fire destroyed a building on the lower East side of Manhattan. An alarm was sounded, and the trucks and personnel arrived in plenty of time to fight the fire. The exit doors worked properly. The steps were clear. The people got out of the building quickly and in order. However, the fire burned out of control and the building had to be demolished. When the firemen arrived, the hoses on the wall were installed properly. There were hoses hundreds of feet in length--clearly sufficient to put the fire out. It was discovered too late, however, that the city water line had never been connected to this part of the system. It was a deadly oversight. To live a human life disconnected from the living God is tragic as well. Jesus did more than come to live among us. He is the life-giving vine and we are the branches. Making Time For Our Faith Parents and guardians sometimes say, Our family is so busy that we don t have time to participate in faith formation. Our Catholic faith is one of our greatest treasures it teaches us how to love others as Jesus loves us; it gives us hope in time of struggle; it leads us to answers about the deepest questions and yearnings of our lives. A life built on this firm foundation of faith is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. But faith doesn t happen by itself. Faith must be nurtured, by the example of family members and by appropriate religious education in the Catholic community, so that it can grow. Count Your Blessings When I feel that the world is caving in and my tears of hopelessness are just about to fall, I look down at my hands. I stretch my fingers and I start to count... my blessings. I say to myself, I have 10 fingers I can move all of them. My skin is clear. I can see. I can hear. I can talk. I can walk. I have a family. I have a home. I have friends. I have a job. Not everyone has these. I am a very lucky person. I am whole and I can cope with this minor setback. Try it. Mosaic TV on Young Catholics and Digital Communication Sunday, May 6, 5:30 am KPIX television Channel 5, CBS Bay Area sfarch.org/mosaic-tv It is the age of digital communication. The devices that receive and send messages are powerful and portable; we have them in our hands, our pockets, our cars, and our homes; the messaging is ceaseless and seductive, and the flow of information (good and bad) is practically infinite. Young people especially seem to live on their devices. On this episode of Mosaic, our guest expert is Samantha Yee, a young writer and editor, student and scholar, who is already a veteran professional, creating digital communications for Catholic groups. As she says, If young people are living on the internet, that s where we have to reach them. Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals.
