1 WORSHIP GUIDE - FEBRUARY 21, 2016 STAYING AWAKE

2 THE WEEKLY WORD The Politics of Persistence by Pastor C. Chappell Temple LENTEN FOCUS The political season now in full bloom around us got me to thinking about him. For a chronology of his career would hardly impress most folks. It was the year after his business failed, for instance, in which he first ran for public office, prompting several to suggest that he did so only because he didn t know what else to do. He lost, returned to the business world, only to see that flop once more, too. The next year he did manage to get elected to the state assembly but two years later he suffered a nervous breakdown, followed by successive defeats in his attempts at speaker, elector, and in his first congressional race. He kept on trying, however, and two years later when the congressional seat came open once more, he actually won it, though he only managed to hold onto it for one term before being defeated again. Seven years later he tried once more, this time running for the Senate. It was a close race, to be sure, but in the end, he lost another one, in part because the media didn t seem to care for him much at all. Nevertheless, when the other Senate seat in his state opened two years later, he tried once more, and true to form he lost that race, too. Still, something inside him said that there was one more race left to make. And so this time he went for it all. And in his eleventh attempt at public office, with a success record of only 3-8, against all conventional wisdom the man from Illinois finally made it, going on to become one of the greatest presidents in our nation s history. All of which should serve to encourage anyone whom life may have beaten down. For asked to explain his philosophy of life, Abraham Lincoln summed it up by simply saying, I do the best I know how, the very best I can. Could it be that thinking such could produce amazing results in our lives, too? 02 Looking for a church home? All are warmly welcomed at Christ Church. We invite you to stop by our I m New Here table downstairs in the Gathering Hall where you can find out more about our congregation. First time guests can also pick up a special welcome gift there. If you would like to join the Christ Church family today, you may do so either by professing your faith in Jesus Christ, or by transferring your membership from another Christian congregation. Simply fill out a new member card which may be found in the Sanctuary pew racks and bring it with you as you come to the front to meet the pastors during the closing music at any of our services. If you have not yet been baptized, we will be happy to recognize your decision today as well as arrange for a convenient time to talk with you about the meaning of that sacrament before scheduling it for one of our upcoming worship services. For more information about our programs, staff and beliefs, please visit our website at SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE *All morning services are held in the Sanctuary. Join us on Sunday morning, where Mark Hayes will be present as a special guest in all services. Mark Hayes is an award-winning concert pianist, composer, and arranger of choral, piano and orchestral music. With over 850 published works to his credit, Mark is well-known for his unique choral settings which draw from diverse styles such as gospel, jazz, pop, folk, and classical to achieve a truly American sound. The six-movement work, REQUIEM, dedicated to the composer s parents, looks to the eternal with hope and glorious musical vision. Its Latin text with some English is appropriate in both concert and worship settings. 03
