We endeavor to live this out through Worship, Community Life, Spiritual Growth and Development, and Education in the Faith. Worship: Communal worship is the center and the heart of our parish life. We strive for the active participation of all in the celebration of the Eucharist. Community Life: We strive to create an integrated, gracious parish community whose members recognize and respect the inherent dignity of every person. We minister to one another and reach out to those with special need. Spiritual Growth and Development: We seek to respond in faith and love to the Scriptures and through prayer and reflection throughout the year, allow the Word of God to nourish, sustain, and transform our personal and communal lives. Education in the Faith: We encourage lifelong religious education for youth and adults. Drawing upon gifts within and outside the parish, we hope to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the Church and of the challenges we face as Catholics in our own time. 3 The Spirit of Justice CONSIDER THIS! The last line of today s gospel refers to the first line of today s first reading. When Jesus was baptized, a voice proclaimed, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Isaiah opens his prophecy today with the voice of God proclaiming, Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased. Oh, to bring God pleasure! What marvelous joy! Isaiah envisions that God takes joy in the chosen one. God s choice of a people started the whole story of salvation. When the covenant worked well, the chosen people responded like good servants, stewards of the word of God. When Israel was pleasing, God put upon the people the spirit. That spirit helped them bring forth justice to the nations. For Christians, all the baptized are God s chosen people, those chosen by God for union with Christ. Upon us God has given a Spirit, to help us bring forth justice to the nations. God s Spirit is anxious to use you to make the world a fairer place. Have you opened your heart? As adults we should know it is wiser to stay home and get better than to come and spread your sickness to others. Please do not drink from the cup if sick. Crime Prevention Please remember to lock your car and do not leave any personal items visible on the seats. Criminals go for opportunity even in a church parking lot. Perhaps you heard the news about the robbery at one of our Long Island churches two weeks ago? Don t let it be you. RESPECT LIFE Defend life America. Woe to you America, if you do not succeed in defending life POPE JOHN PAUL 2 Participation in the March for Life is vitally important. This annual display of commitment to sacredness of life in the womb by people all over the United States is a powerful statement to our elected representatives and to society itself. This year the March for Life will be held on Friday, January 18 th. We have reserved a bus for the trip to Washington, D.C. on that date. To reserve your seat, please call, Bob Yeomans at Our bus will leave from TJ MAXX in Riverhead at 5:30am. Requested donation for the bus is $10. Thank you. It is published by St. Mary s Press. This Bible has easy to read pages, activities and information for you and your child to study and learn about the Bible. This is not a Children s Story Bible that your child may have gotten when he or she was little. It is the Bible in its entirety for $27 each. This is a great gift for children or grandchildren, ages 5 through 12. If you would like to preview a copy call the Religious Formation Office, or stop by our office during the hours posted above. Every family can benefit from a Bible that helps to apply God s Word in their lives. FAMILY REFLECTION Today is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Can you find your child s or teen s Baptismal certificate? It is a wonderful practice to celebrate your child s Baptism like a birthday. That was the day that your child became a member of the Catholic Church. The prayers spoken that day called your child a priest, prophet and king. How special it is that we are sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus? Celebrate this special relationship sometime this week. FAMILY PRACTICE Tell your child about his or her Baptism day, why you chose the godparents, how your decided on his or her name. Then get a special dessert or something to put a candle in and sing, Happy Baptism Day to you like the birthday song. If you can find your child s Baptism candle, that would be very special, too. At the meeting parents will be asked to sign a Permission Form to allow their child(ren) to attend the student sessions. The student sessions will be held during class times at the end of January and early February.
