This is a parable about a scoundrel, yet it praises him and his wisdom. The manager has been given notice by his CEO and he decides to even up the tables, while he still can, for those who are struggling to pay their debts to the company. The manager is praised for his astuteness, he has his priorities straight, he is happy to let debt go, to redistribute the load. Of course, there is self-interest on his part but Jesus is telling us that the only value the money really has is in the way it is disposed of and in doing this the manager wins the hearts and minds of the workers. The manager won t be the most successful man on the planet compared to the children of the light who are more concerned with accounts than with real people. The manager is free-spirited and can be trusted to value what is really important. He knows that none of this material wealth is permanent and uses the authority that he has to relieve the suffering of those who are indebted to his company. Yes, he is a bit of a scoundrel, but Jesus liked scoundrels, once their efforts were put to good use. God s dream for creation is different from Pharaoh s dream or Rome s dream or Wall Street s dream. This high-scoring and exciting affair went down to the wire and ended 3-19 to The minor hurlers had a great start to their Championship by defeating the Division one side Naomh Barróg on the score of 1-18 to Well done to Shane O Connor formerly of Clonard who was part of the Greystones Golf Club team that won the All Ireland Mixed Foursomes, sponsored by I Need Spain recently. 4 Interested in Spirituality? A new programme in spirituality is being offered in partnership with Lumen Dominican Centre, Sion Hill Campus, Blackrock, Co. Dublin. This Adult Education Certificate in Spirituality is a two-year part-time programme which takes place on Thursday evenings from pm and on seven Saturdays each year. The programme begins on 29 Sept It is an exciting and spiritually enriching programme open to all, and no prior learning is required. Teach us to truly love our neighbor as ourselves. Jesus, earth s ransom, have you chosen us to bring your blessed promise to all the world? 5 CHURCH CLEANING GUILD New members needed to join either of two Teams who look after the cleaning of the church on alternate Tuesdays after 10am Mass. Lord of the oppressed Jesus said to his disciples: You cannot be the slave both of God and of money. Thank God all of us are much better off today than we were in past generations and even better off than we ever expected to be. This brings with it a sense of security and lessens people s anxiety about the future. But it also can bring with it a sense of self-sufficiency in which we think that we are in need of no one, not even God. We become selfish, and the more we have the more we want. The challenge of the Gospel today is to be thankful for all we have and to learn to share it with those who are in need. When we become selfish with our money we also become selfish with our time and this has a serious effect on our marriage and family relationships and the quality of our lives together becomes less loving.
