2 Santa getting ready for Christmas WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES AUGUST 2018 Thank you To all who work so hard preparing the church and enhancing our Liturgies and welcoming others during the past year. The Church Cleaning Guild, Floral Teams, Altar Society, Liturgy groups, Baptism team, Do This In Memory team, Fáilte team, Stewards, Choirs, Ministers of the Word, Ministers of the Eucharist, Maintenance Team and all who prepare and present Thursday evening prayer, Thursday morning prayer during the Summer months, and Advent morning prayer. Thanks to all of you who come and participate daily and weekly in prayer, devotions, the daily rosary and Eucharist. To all who collect and deliver for the church, those who prepared the crib and decorated the church so beautifully for Christmas - your contribution is very much appreciated. 3 The Wednesday morning Hospitality group had a wonderful Christmas party on the 13th. Lots of reindeers and festive hats and jumpers. The choir from Queen of Angels, local national school were in great voice under the baton of Ms Laura Dunne, & Breffni on the keyboard, regailing us with their joyful Christmas songs and carols. There were prizes galore (one for everyone in the audience). But, no one did as well as Fr Lane the previous Sunday at the Queen of Angels Christmas Fair he won vouchers for the tanning salon and the hairdresssers!!!

4 INVITATION - A Mass to celebrate the children who were Baptised in our Church during Together with their Parents and Godparents, these children are invited to come to the12.45pm Mass Sunday 7th January, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. You are invited to bring your baptismal candle, and your family & friends to this celebration. Our American visitors arrived from Pittsburgh in July and we have some great memories - from the breakfast on their arrival, the hike in Glendalough, visits to Knock & Clonmacnoise; Tour of Dublin & scavenger hunt - to the final barbeque before departure Alice and Bill get a loan of Santa s car Mary, the Ark of God s Covenant Rejoice so highly favoured; the Lord is with you. The Angel addressed these words to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and our Mother. But they are also addressed to each of us who have the wonderful privilege of knowing Jesus through our Baptism. They have a very special significance for couples who are privileged to have each other and to be united in the Sacrament of Marriage. In the course of this week of Christmas, be aware of all the good that is in your love relationship, how highly favoured you are to have this person as your wife/husband. Be aware also of the goodness of each one of your children and how privileged you are to have them. As you celebrate the Eucharist during this week, make a special effort to appreciate the people of your faith community. And know that your love makes Christ present. Johnny Doherty, CSsR.

5 There have been 364 sleeps since last Christmas and here we are again enjoying this magical time of year as a community of faith, the family of God. Everyone has something to say about Christmas and here are a few quotes I have picked up over the year: Roy L. Smith. Harlan Miller says.. But I found Pope Francis words particularly inspiring (incidentally Pope Francis will be passing through Dublin on his way to Balally in 2018) and maybe they will inspire you too: I invite you to sit with these words around the Crib in your house or maybe read them together as a family in the Christmas gathering. Putting Christ back in the Crib, in the heart of Christmas is a wonderful thing. It gives meaning to all our beautiful traditions, carols and celebrations. It is the Christ Child that gives us joy and hope. So a very blessed and happy Christmas to all the community particularly those who are coming home for Christmas. Fr Peter F. Byrne LOOKING FORWARD TO 2018 The Parish as a Family of Families will be a huge year for the Church in Dublin. Pope Francis will be coming in August for the World Meeting of Families (21 st -26 th August). The parish of Balally wishes to participate fully and we already have a special programme. Lent and Easter will be powerful times to consider the Family in all its dimensions and definitions. We will unveil our intentions in January. We also hope to host people who are coming to Dublin from all over the world to participate in the event so if you would consider how you could help in the hosting please leave your name in the parish office. The updating of the Parish infrastructure: Our Parish Church and Pastoral Centre are wonderful spaces for worship and community gathering. A large part of this was built with the hard earned pennies and pounds of Balally Parish. The Parish Team and the Pastoral Centre Board feel a strong sense of duty to keep the Parish Property as Safe, Welcoming, Beautiful and Christ Centred as possible. This requires permanent up-keeping and minding. It involves a lot of work from the staff, the maintenance teams, the gardening team and many others. We have to address the heating and lighting difficulties in the Church, we have to enhance our storage capacity and entrance into the Parish Centre and Office. We also have resonance difficulties in the Parish Centre that need to be resolved. We want to put in more special-needs parking areas and renew the entrance into the Church to make it safer in stormy and windy conditions ( and much of the heat in the Church disappears through the doors and windows without as much as an excuse me or by your leave ). The Bell Tower has to be fixed and reinstated. Indeed many plans that you must know about and that we will keep you informed about as the year goes on. All this practical work is only in function of the Pastoral work that goes on in the parish: especially the Sunday Liturgies, the Sacramental Preparation, the dignified celebration of the Requiem Masses, the daily Masses, the Rosary, Eucharistic adoration, the Advent Morning Prayer, the Thursday Evening Prayer, the Prayer of the Church in summertime and the many other spiritual and charitable efforts that take place in our Sacred Space.. plus all the gatherings, joy, formation, friendship and events that take place in the Parish Centre. This all happens because of the generous contribution of time, talents and treasures of our parishioners to whom we are immensely grateful to and proud of. The Parish Team.

6 A year of celebrations for the Parish. In June, Fr Lane Celebrates the Golden Jubilee of his Ordination to the priesthood and 25 years as Parish Priest of Balally. Parish History was launched. Naomh Olaf GAA Club Darren Egan has resigned as Naomh Olaf Club Coach to take up a position as a secondary school teacher. Since September 2009 Darren who was reared in Wedgewood has been the Club s fulltime coach. His quiet and friendly personality endeared him to everybody and he was loved by the children he coached. We wish Darren who plans to marry in February every success in his new career. There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot. There numbers drawn were 6, 10 and 14.
