2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, A central theme of Mark s Gospel is how Jesus hearers (especially the Twelve) fail to comprehend the deeper meaning of his words and actions. The wild charges made by the scribes and the apologies offered by his family in today s Gospel indicate just how misunderstood Jesus was by those closest to him: The Jesus who calls his disciples to be a united house and community is dismissed by his own house as out of his mind. Apologizing for his exorbitant claims about himself and his challenging their most cherished traditions and revered institutions, his family attempts to bring Jesus home. The Jesus who cast out demons and cured the sick is charged with being possessed himself. The scribes cannot grasp the single-minded dedication of Jesus to the will of God without the filters of their interpretations and direction; hence, he must be an agent of Satan, the prince of demons. (Remember that whatever the people of Gospel Palestine could not understand or explain was considered the work of demons. ) God s kingdom of grace is to blaspheme against the Spirit of God: to be so mired in cynicism and skepticism that we refuse to embrace the possibilities for realizing the hope of God s grace. For Jesus, the crushing pessimism that God s grace is inaccessible to us condemns us to lives of sadness and isolation, not the lives of meaning and joy God envisions for us. Fr. The Gospel Jesus destroys the barriers created by race, culture, wealth and social status. He speaks of a new, united human family: the family of God. Since 1986, the organization has sheltered thousands of adults and children, adapting to their changing needs by creating programs to help them become self-sufficient. The Family Promise network of sheltering congregations and transitional apartments provide stability while the families receive intensive individual case management to help them realize their goal of true independence. For the past few weeks we ve provided information about this year s Bread for the World Campaign. We invite you to join us in the gathering space before or after masses to sign letters to each of our three legislators: Senators Booker and Menendez and Representative Gottheimer. St. Peter's will be hosting families from Family Promise of Bergen County with supporting congregations First Congregational Church of River Edge, St. Joseph's Church, Oradell and Temple Avodat Shalom, River Edge. We will be hosting during the week of June 17 through June 24. DONATIONS and VOLUNTEERS are needed for set -up, food preparation, and activities during the week. This will be an excellent opportunity for parents and children to share our home with guests and provide warmth, love, delicious meals and great fun. Catholic Charities Clothing Bin Thank you to all who have made donations at the Catholic Charities donation bins in the church parking lot. A few reminders: Acceptable bin donations include used clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals and books (no reference books). If the bin is full, do not leave donations outside the bin. As stated on the bin, this is considered littering and punishable by law. Large items which do not fit in the bins, and furniture, are not accepted. From the Office of Faith Formation Catechists needed for Summer Program We need catechists for the Faith Formation Summer Program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. The Summer Program is from July 9-12 and July from 3pm to 5pm. The Summer Program is an enriching experience for all catechists and students alike. We will provide training and teaching materials. 6 JustSteps: Catholic Social Teaching Catholics Are Still In Part 1 On April 25 the Catholic Climate Covenant officially launched the Catholics Are Still In campaign to assemble church institutions behind a united Catholic Climate Declaration advocating for US action on climate change and support for the Paris agreement that the administration plans to exit. As Catholic communities, organizations, and institutions in the United States, we join with state, tribal, and local governments, as well as businesses, financial institutions, and other faith organizations, to declare that we are still in on actions that meet the climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. Climate change is an urgent moral issue because it compromises the future of our common home, threatens human life and human dignity, and adds to the hardships already experienced by the poorest and most vulnerable people both at home and abroad. We teach that governments exist to protect and promote the common good, and that the climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all... The campaign is coordinated by Catholic Climate Covenant and its partner members, which include the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. It aligns with the broader We Are Still In coalition that formed among citizens, states, and a multitude of organizations and business in the wake of the announcement that the US would withdraw from the Parish Agreement at the earliest opportunity. Since the launch of We Are Still In, more than 2700 governors, mayors, university presidents, and business and faith leaders, representing million Americans, have signed onto that declaration.
