1 ST. PETER THE APOSTLE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH River Edge, New Jersey Founded 1948 November is Stewardship Month. We would like to thank and acknowledge those who generously share their time, talent and treasure to make St. Peter s a vibrant, active, compassionate parish a beacon of Christ s light. Special thanks to all those who contribute faithfully to St. Peters financially, especially those who use envelopes or parish pay. You keep the lights on in our building and our hearts, and allow us to fulfill our Mission Statement to love and serve others in faithful stewardship to the mission of Jesus Christ. Thank you to those who serve in Parish administration: trustees, finance council, pastoral council, office staff, and building and grounds staff. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Mt. 18:20). Nourished by the Eucharist and prompted by the Holy Spirit, the stewards who serve on our numerous ministries make a difference in the lives they touch as ambassadors for Christ. Let us acknowledge and thank those who serve with such selfless hearts and eyes of faith: Ministries of the Ministries of Ministries of Baptismal Ministry Cornerstone Engaging Spirituality Faith Formation Journey Teen New Evangelization Ministry Parish Library Parish Website Pre-Cana RCIA Small Christian Communities Ministries of Altar Linens Altar Servers Altar Servers-Adults Eucharistic Ministers Gift Presenters Lectors Liturgy of the Word for Children Music Ministry Parish Prayer Chain Ushers Carnival Committee Community Sunday CYO Basketball Event Planning Committee Festival Committee Men's Basketball MOM's Ministry Rosary Society Senior's Ministry St. Peters Singles Group The Networker Youth Ministry Welcome Ministry Advent Giving Tree Equal Exchange Fair Trade Sales Family Promise Food Drive Food Pantry Green Team Harrison House Habitat for Humanity Just Faith Ministry to the Sick and Homebound Parents Who Have Lost Children Project Linus Respect Life Social Concerns Core St. Martins Kitchen St. Peter's Quilters Sunday Collection Counters Turkey Drive Walk-In Supper Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 26, 2017

2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, The very concept of Christ the King might seem rather triumphalistic in an age of expanding democratization of society. But look carefully at this king as portrayed in today s parable: he was hungry and thirsty and naked and ill and in prison. Who are his loyal subjects? They are those who give food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty, who welcome strangers and clothe the naked, who comfort the ill and visit prisoners. What a king and what a kingdom! The goal of this king is not to oppress his subjects with his power but rather to break the power of evil : In this kingdom the evils of economic, medical, and criminal injustice are confronted and overcome by subjects who not only respect the King of creation but also glory in his justice and live in his love. who live in holiness and grace, and who work to bring justice, love and peace, will inherit the kingdom prepared for them from the creation of the world. After we have obeyed the Lord, and in his Spirit nurtured on earth the values of human dignity, brotherhood and freedom, and indeed all the good fruits of our nature and enterprise, we will find them again, but freed of stain, burnished and transfigured, when Christ hands over to the father: a kingdom eternal and universal, a kingdom of truth and life, of holiness and grace, of justice, love, and peace. On this earth that Kingdom is already present in mystery. When the Lord returns it will be brought into full flower.* *Vatican II, Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, 1965: 39 The kingdom that we celebrate today is a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace. Those who respect truth and life, Baptisms will be celebrated at Mass on the following weekends: December 16/17, January 13/14, February 10/11, April 7/8, May 19/20, June 9/10, July 14/15, August 11/12, September 15/16, October 13/14, November 17/18, December 15/16. Parents may choose the 5:30, 9:30, 11:00 or 12:30 Mass. Next Baptismal Preparation Session: December 9, :00 AM to 12:00 Noon Please call Deacon Edward Bowen to schedule a baptism and/or register for the session at Page 2 Fr. Monthly Calendar Linked Online at / Daily Calendar: Many hands make light work! There is a need for more volunteers to clean and iron the altar linens (purificators and smaller cloths). You are asked to pick up the linens on Sunday after the 12:30 mass the week you are assigned, wash and iron the linens, and return them by the following Friday. It takes about 3 hours of your time for the week you are assigned. Some of the older helpers had to retire, so we need more help. You would be assigned approximately four times during the year. Please contact Eileen Hanrahan at or ehanrahan@saint-peter.org. Thanks! Rosary Society Christmas Party Monday, December 4, 6:30 PM Our annual Christmas Party will be held at Domani Restaurant in Hillsdale. Please drop off your check for $35.00 to the rectory in an envelope labeled Rosary Christmas Party no later than Tuesday, November 28th. We need a final headcount by that date. We hope you will join us! Book Discussion Group Planned For the New Year Our Archbishop, Joseph Cardinal Tobin, has said "In too many parts of our church LGBT people have been made to feel unwelcome, excluded, and even shamed." A recent book by James Martin, SJ, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity, has become a controversial book within and outside the church. Why? At St. Peter's, we would like to explore that simple question in a series of three (3) sessions, which would involve reading the book and attending sessions on January 11, January 18, and January 25, 2018 at 7:30 PM in the Parish Center. All are welcome! The only course material would be purchasing Fr. Martin's book at a cost of $19.99 and your presence. Please contact Deacon Paul Kazanecki at pkazanecki@saint-peter.org or leave message at the Rectory, if you would like to join the discussion or have any questions. Plan to stay for Community Sunday Next Weekend December 3rd after the 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 Masses Walk-In Supper Volunteers Needed Thursday, November 30 Six times a year, through Family Promise, our parish provides dinner to the poor and homeless at the Bergen County Human Resources Services Center in Hackensack. We are in need of additional people willing to occasionally heat up frozen lasagna or meatballs. The food is delivered to your home on a Wednesday afternoon, you heat it up on Thursday and bring it to the church parking lot that afternoon. We are also looking for volunteers to serve the meal at the Center. Our next hosting date is Thursday, November 30. Please contact Beth Falker at if you can help with either task, or sign up at New Ministry at Your Service: Rosary for the Homebound Several Rosarians have volunteered to pray the Rosary with those who are homebound. 6 JustSteps: Catholic Social Teaching Sad, tired and angry: A prayer in the face of gun violence Almighty God, I come before you, once again, after another shooting. I am sad, God. So I ask you to receive into your loving care the souls of those who were killed, to care for those who were wounded or hurt in any way, to console the family members and friends of those who died or were wounded, to strengthen the hands of the rescue workers, medical professional and caregivers. I pray too for the shooter, as I must as a Christian. And all this makes me inexpressibly sad, God. But I know that the sadness I feel is your sadness. It is the same sadness your son expressed when he wept over the death of his friend Lazarus. I am tired, God. I m tired of the unwillingness to see this as an important issue. I m tired of those in power who work to prevent any real change, I m tired of those who say that gun violence can t be reduced. All this makes me tired. But I know that the tiredness I feel is your tiredness. It s the same tiredness that Jesus felt after his own struggles against injustice that led him to fall asleep on the boat with his disciples. I am angry, God. I m angry at the seeming powerlessness of our community to prevent this. I m angry at the selfish financial interests who block change. I m angry that these shootings happen at all. But I know that this anger is your anger It s the same anger Jesus felt when he overturned the tables in the Temple, angry that anyone would be taken advantage of in any way. Help me see in these emotions your own desire for change. Help me see in these feelings your moving me to act. Help me see in these reactions your pushing me to do something. Because I know this is the way you move people to action. And I know that you desire action. For Jesus did not stand by while people were being hurt. He plunged into their lives. So help me to answer these questions: How can I help? How can I fight against gun violence? How can I urge my political leaders to enact change? How can I help people understand that this is an issue about life? I am sad over the loss of life, tired of excuses for the loss of life, and angry that we are paralyzed by the loss of life. Turn my sadness into compassion. Turn my tiredness into advocacy. Turn my paralysis into the freedom to act. Help me to be compassionate, to advocate and to act, as your son did, Almighty God. (this prayer is taken in its entirety from the October 2, 2017 edition of America Magazine before the Texas shooting. Its author is James Martin SJ) Ongoing at St. Peter s PARISH FOOD PANTRY Open to the public on Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Located in the back parking lot.
