2 The Deacon s Corner celebrating 50 years of the diaconate Dear Folks, In August, Pope France gave a Festival of Family speech at Croke Park Stadium in Dublin. The Holy Father said that the Church is the family of God s children and a family in which we care for everyone. It is when our children are baptized, Francis stated, that they become part of God s family. In our Baptismal Preparation classes here, led for many years by Deacon Ed Bowen and his devoted team members, we prepare our children to become part of God s family. The session leads off with the Gospel from Mark. Jesus words, Let the children come to me (Mark 10:14) is proclaimed to the parents and godparents of children to be baptized in the days and weeks ahead of the session. These words are a loving invitation by Jesus to enter into a deeper relationship with Him. The invitation by Jesus to the children is addressed to all of us, too. By virtue of our own Baptism, we are called to be part of God s family and become one of His disciples. Jesus places His arms around us, embraces us, and invites into His vineyard, which requires us to sustain and nurture it for future generations. How do we sustain and nurture the vineyard? Here at the vineyard called St. Peter the Apostle Parish, we have many opportunities to use our gifts and talents to serve and minister in order to make Gods vineyard grow and flourish. We are all gifted in some way. We all have some talent with which the Lord has blessed us. This month, as we hear from the ministry clusters Word, Worship, Community Building, and Service and the ministries within each cluster, may we be inspired to accept Jesus invitation to come to Him and work in His vineyard. Each day is an opportunity to discover and use our gifts and talents to grow His Kingdom. The Catholic s Divorce Healing Program Begins October 15 St. Peter s is pleased to announce the return of an exciting program for men and women who have suffered from divorce. The Catholic s Divorce Survival Guide is a 6 -week program featuring 30-minute DVD sessions each week that cover topics of shock, denial, anger, grief, forgiveness, money, the courts, the kids, the ex-spouse, annulment, dating, sexuality, spirituality, remarriage or staying single and much more. CYO Basketball Registration Now Open through October 14 Registration for the upcoming St Peter s CYO basketball season is NOW OPEN!!! You can register here: Mass of the Anointing of the Sick Saturday, October 13 On Saturday morning, October 13th, St. Peter the Apostle Parish will celebrate a communal Anointing of the Sick during Mass at 11:00 a.m. We particularly invite you as a member of the St. Peter s parish family to consider participating and receiving the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament may be received more than once and is for any person who has become ill and is in danger of subsequent sickness. We especially encourage the elderly to be candidates, but anyone facing major surgery, a serious illness, or anyone who has been afflicted for a long time is invited to receive the sacrament. 6 Many Thanks Thank you to all who donated to the September CFA food drive collection. We received $400 in cash donations and 44 bags of food, which were donated to the Center for Food Action. Please Take Note The River Edge Environmental commission would like to thank St. Peter the Apostle parish for participating in the Trex Plastic Film recycling challenge. We are so happy to report that we have reached our goal of 500 pounds of stretch plastic. The bins will no longer be in the gathering space. But you can still recycle your plastic bags, etc. by bringing them to local grocery stores that have collection bins. Please do not leave any plastic in the gathering space. Remember the next time you go to the store, ask yourself if you really need to take the plastic bag? You can bring your own. Recycling is great but reducing what we use is even better. The breathtaking scenery of multicolored leaves the brilliant yellow, gold and orange, along with the green, brown and in some regions purple produces an unforgettable image.
