2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, The Today we hear in the opening words of Luke s Gospel his reason for compiling his Gospel. He writes for Theophilus so that you may see how reliable the instruction you have received. This story of Jesus who comes to proclaim glad tidings to the poor... to announce a year of favor from the Lord should make a profound difference in the lives of all who hear it. In his humanity, Jesus reveals a God who is approachable and present to us in all that is good and right and loving around us. While Israel longed for a Messiah who would lead them to victory and vindication, Jesus the Messiah comes with a much different message of humility, reconciliation, compassion and forgiveness. The good news of the Gospel calls to become rather than to shun, to lift up rather than condemn, to seek the humble way of servanthood rather than the satisfaction of self-righteousness. In the Father s Son, Isaiah s vision of a world transformed and reconciled in God s peace and justice is fulfilled; in God s Christ, God re-creates us and our world in the light of grace and the spirit of compassion. In baptism, we take on the work of fulfilling Isaiah s Today, we are taking up the collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Your support helps the CCC connect people to Christ, in the United States and around the world, through the Internet, television, radio, and print media. Half the funds we collect remain here in the Archdiocese of Newark to support local efforts. Be a part of this campaign to spread the Gospel message. Thank you! Babies at this stage can feel excruciating pain. Seventeen states have already passed this bill. We need to pass it in New Jersey! Also, baby feet car magnets are available in the back of church for a suggested donation of $5. The baby feet symbol means we are in solidarity with the babies in the womb and their families. St. Peter s will be hosting parents and children from Family Promise during the week of February With support from Temple Avodat Shalom, First Congregational Church and St. Joe s, we will provide a home filled with love, delicious meals, lots of activities and support. At this time, we do not know how many families we are expecting. We are in need of volunteers for setup on Saturday, 2/16, and several different tasks on Friday & Saturday, 2/22 & 2/23, as well as breakdown on Sunday morning 2/24 after the families leave. Fr. Mike invites all Ministry Leaders and Members to attend either one of these meeting dates. One of the key items on the agenda will be the planning of a Parish Community Saturday. Collection of Old Palm February 3rd through February 24th Don t know what to do with last years palm? Baskets, for collection of old palm, will be set out in the Gathering Space for the next two weeks. The palm will be burnt and the ashes will be used for distribution on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. Catholic Charities Clothing Bin Thank you to all who have made donations at the Catholic Charities donation bins in the church parking lot. A few reminders: Acceptable bin donations include used clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals and books (no reference books). 7 Archdiocese News Outside St. Peter s Book Discussion Group Planned For the New Year at St. Mary s, Dumont 2019 Anniversary Liturgies Our Archbishop, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, has said "In too many parts of our church LGBT people have been made to feel unwelcome, excluded, and even shamed." A recent book by James Martin, SJ, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity, has become a controversial book within and outside the church. Why? At St Mary s, Dumont, we will be exploring that simple question in a series of three (3) sessions, which would involve reading the book and attending sessions on three consecutive Wednesday evenings, January 30, February 6, and February 13th at 7:30 PM in the Parish Office (located in the rear of the rectory), 280 Washington Ave, Dumont.
