2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, The Gospel story is pretty simple. A wealthy man gives his fortune to each of his three servants to care for while he is gone on a trip. He doesn t give them instructions, at least that we are told of. When he returns, the owner sees that two of the three servants invested his money and got back twice the amount. He is delighted. So far, the moral of the story would be: Make the most of what you have. But we miss the most interesting part of all if we look just at the successful servants (as does the shortened version of the Gospel in the lectionary!!!). We miss the fascinating and puzzling story of the third servant. This poor soul did not invest the money at all. He buried it in the ground. Quite simply, he was afraid of investing and losing it. He was right to be afraid, given the owner s attitude, which, as we see, would have the man thrown into the darkness outside where there would be wailing and grinding of teeth. Quite an overreaction, it seems. This poor guy just wanted to keep the owner s money safe! Maybe the proprietor was simply a demanding person, as the parable says. Dark spirited. If we love those around us, that love peaks and grows. But there is more to it. The monetary unit talent in Jesus time was not a small amount. Even one talent could be worth more than a laborer would earn in a lifetime. And the owner entrusted a lot more than just money to the servants. He left them all his possessions, everything he had. He took a great risk and he wanted them to do the same, not leave the investment rotting away underground somewhere. Now assume that the parable is about God. Maybe God entrusts an even greater amount to us. Life, talents, the gift of love, of the living breathing human persons around us and every so often, real and open acts of unselfish love. God gives all this free of charge, gives to us our own lives with all their rewards and disappointments and catastrophes and he says to us, dive in! Have your life! Make whatever you will of it! You are beloved to me! This is truly wonderful! But then an awful question arises. Does God curse those who are afraid and who bury what they are given? Jesus at least seems to say yes: To everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Ouch. That hurts. How are we to interpret these words? Well, in the realm of spirituality there is only one thing that completely goes away if you only have a small bit of it, but which gets greater if you have it and use it. Love. If we love those around us, that love peaks and grows. But if fear slams the door against love, guess what. The nonlover will be in the darkness outside, wailing and gnashing his teeth. We are all frightened. It is not so unusual. God waits for ages to see if we will accept just a tiny bit of the forgiving love he offers. And to see if we will even find just enough courage to invest some of that love in other people. It is a big risk he takes, and I m sure he says, oh no, not again when we fail. But this is not a harsh reaction. It is just a disappointment of someone who loves us very well. You see, love casts out fear. So, let love in. Fr. Mike Baptisms will be celebrated at Mass on the following weekends: December 16/17, January 13/14, February 10/11, April 7/8, May 19/20, June 9/10, July 14/15, August 11/12, September 15/16, October 13/14, November 17/18, December 15/16. We are in need of additional people willing to occasionally heat up frozen lasagna or meatballs. The food is delivered to your home on a Wednesday afternoon, you heat it up on Thursday and bring it to the church parking lot that afternoon. We are also looking for volunteers to serve the meal at the Center. Our next hosting date is Thursday, November 30. Please contact Beth Falker at if you can help with either task, or sign up at Book Discussion Group Planned For the New Year Our Archbishop, Joseph Cardinal Tobin, has said "In too many parts off our church LGBT people have been made to feel unwelcome, excluded, and even shamed." A recent book by James Martin, SJ, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity, has become a controversial book within and outside the church. Why? At St. Peter's, we would like to explore that simple question in a series of three (3) sessions, which would involve reading the book and attending sessions on January 11, January 18, and January 25, 2018 at 7:30 PM in the Parish Center. All are welcome! The only course material would be purchasing Fr. Martin's book at a cost of $19.99 and your presence. Please contact Deacon Paul Kazanecki at pkazanecki@saintpeter.org or leave message at the Rectory, if you would like to join the discussion or have any questions. Please stay for Community Sunday Today November 19th after the 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 Masses Altar Linens Ministry Needs Help Many hands make light work! You are asked to pick up the linens on Sunday after the 12:30 mass the week you are assigned, wash and iron the linens, and return them by the following Friday. It takes about 3 hours of your time for the week you are assigned. Some of the older helpers had to retire, so we need more help. You would be assigned approximately four times during the year. Please contact Eileen Hanrahan at or ehanrahan@saint-peter.org. Thanks! Our financial contribution also helps to support Catholic American Indian communities on reservations, in rural areas and inner cities. The collection also supports African American evangelization programs particularly in the south. Let us unite ourselves with the love of Christ with generous hearts. 6 JustSteps: Catholic Social Teaching How the US Bishops Are Addressing the Social Issues of the Day The US Catholic bishops met in Baltimore during the week at their annual fall meeting, where the agenda was to include updates from working groups on racism and immigration, the USCCB response to Charlottesville and white supremacy, and to the harsh treatment of undocumented immigrants, particularly the deportation of the young people in the DACA program. According to a press release from the USCCB prior to the meeting, much of the business promised to be routine, though the bishops as a body have been vocal in recent months about a range of political and social issues of political and social issues. For example, just before the conference bishops who head subcommittees called the proposed tax overhaul unacceptable because they say it raises taxes on the poor to reduce taxes on the wealthy. After the church shooting on November 5 in Texas, bishops across America said that the US problem with gun violence must be addressed with a real debate about needed measures to save lives and make our communities safer. A new head of the Pro-Life Committee is also expected to be chosen. For those who believe that the church and the bishops have not before spoken out as moral leaders on political and social issues, and perhaps should not, here is a little history. The USCCB is also celebrating its 100th anniversary, having been founded originally in 1917 to organize the Catholic war effort and liaise with the US government. In 1919 the group named itself the National Catholic Welfare Council to begin dealing with a postwar world. In that year on the bishops behalf, A Program of Social Reconstruction was published as a guide to address issues of social justice upon which future international peace would likely depend. Since that time, in one way or another the 1966 renamed USCC (US Catholic Conference) or USCCB (Conference of Bishops) has addressed and encouraged just approaches to education, wages, and labor rights, religious freedom war relief, refugee resettlement, immigration, segregation, prolife, health, and racism, reminding Catholics and the population alike of their civic and moral responsibility to one another and to the common good. The Church s commitment to issues of social justice and the correcting of unjust structures is therefore part of its ongoing social mission. Add your prayers and advocacy efforts in today s areas of gun violence, immigration, and racism. Ongoing at St. Peter s PARISH FOOD PANTRY Open to the public on Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Located in the back parking lot. Donations of non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene products can be dropped off any time. Look for the blue bin at the entrance to the Parish Center.
