2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, Today s Gospel is unique to Luke s Gospel: a summary of the themes of John s preaching. The Baptizer is approached by two groups whose professions were scorned by the Pharisees: tax collectors, who usually made handsome profits by gouging their fellow Jews, and Jewish soldiers who belonged to the Roman peacekeeping force. John requires of them not a change of professions but a change of heart and attitude, that they perform their duties with honesty and integrity. John calls for selfless concern for one s disadvantaged brothers and sisters. John assures his Jewish listeners that he is not the Messiah; in fact, John considers himself lower than the lowest slaves. Only a non-jewish slave could be required to loosen his master s sandal strap and John does not presume to do even that. In proclaiming the Messiah s baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, John employs the image of a winnowing-fan. A winnowing-fan was a flat, wooden, shovel-like tool, used to toss grain into the air. The heavier grain fell to the ground and the chaff blew away. In the same way, John says, the Messiah will come to gather the remnant of Israel and destroy the Godless. Like John s proclamation at the River Jordan, we are called to be witnesses of God s love by the love we extend to others; precursors of his justice by our unfailing commitment to what is right and good; lamps reflecting the light of God s Christ in our forgiveness, mercy and compassion; harvesters of souls through our humble and dedicated servanthood. As John preached at the Jordan, we can only welcome the Messiah into our lives when we move beyond ourselves to embrace the hurt and brokenness, the needs and hopes of others; we can only realize the best of humanity by taking on greed and arrogance and bigotry that diminish our humanity. Every of act of compassion, justice and reconciliation is a sign of the expectation that fills every human heart for the coming of God s kingdom in our time as well as in the time to come. Fr. If you would like to help, you would pick up the linens after mass on Sunday, wash them and iron them and return them by the following Friday. You would be assigned around 4 times a year, and the time commitment each time is approximately 3 hours in total. It provides for a prayerfully meditative time, we can assure you! Habitat for Humanity Ministry Help Wanted Habitat for Humanity has been involved in rebuilding or repairing homes in our area for several years. Parents Who Have Lost Children Support Group This group offers help for all the special needs of those who have suffered the death of a child. Outside St. Peter s Help for New Moms Needed Birthright of Bergen County, a crisis pregnancy center dedicated to encouraging and helping women choose life for their babies, is in need of volunteers to share their time and love for God s miracle of life. Birthright provides community resources, clothes, diapers and financial help to women. Volunteers are needed in the office at 19 W Pleasant Ave, Maywood to greet, help and support mothers-to-be that come in or call in. If you have time and would like to volunteer, please call Mary Pat or Barbara at Volunteers Needed to Join the River Edge Police Reserves Make a difference; give us your time and talent! The River Edge Police Department is currently seeking volunteers to join their dedicated team of Police Reserve officers. The Police Reserves are civilian volunteers trained to support and contribute to the overall safety and protection of the community. The Reserve force provides the department with extra manpower on a regular basis that can be deployed quickly for critical incidents and other emergency situations that require more officers than would otherwise be available. Applications to become an Officer in the River Edge Police Reserves are accepted year round and can be picked up in person at the River Edge Police Department Headquarters. Request for Hospice Volunteers Life Source Hospice is seeking volunteers to be part of our elderly patients end-of-life care. Volunteers serve as friendly bedside visitors to patients throughout Bergen County and provide them with much appreciated companionship by sitting, listening and praying with them. Volunteers also provide support to family members. Volunteers determine their own schedules and can visit patients during the daytime hours during the week and weekends. Most volunteers donate 2 hours a week of their time for a minimum of 6 months. Volunteers receive ongoing hospice training and support by experienced hospice professionals. For more information, please contact Life Source Hospice at or kiplifesourcehospice@ gmail.com Catholic Chaplaincy Volunteers Needed The Catholic Chaplaincy at Bergen Regional Medical Center, Paramus, needs volunteers to: transport long-term residents to and from hospital Masses, to be friendly visitors to those confined to bed or wheelchairs, and to set up and take down altar items for hospital Masses on Saturdays (3:30 PM) and Sundays (11:15 AM). Report Abuse The Archdiocese of Newark takes very seriously any and all complaints of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform the Archdiocese immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse.
