2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, According to the Mosaic code, adultery was considered among the gravest of sins, punishable by death; but the law of the Roman occupiers forbade the Jewish authorities to impose and carry out the death sentence on anyone. The dilemma facing Jesus, then, is this: If Jesus condemns the woman, he undermines his own teachings on forgiveness and puts him in conflict with the Roman authority; if he does not condemn her, he breaks faith with the covenant Law. Jesus response to their hypocrisy challenges the Jews understanding of judgment and authority: God reserves the role of judging others to himself; to us belongs the work of forgiveness and reconciliation. God s commandments are addressed to each one of us as individuals to keep. We are called to judge our own actions and pass sentence on our own lives. While the scribes and Pharisees view authority as a license to criticize, ensure and condemn this woman, Jesus sees authority as a gift for transforming her life and reconciling her with God. Jesus calls us not simply to follow the Law but to embrace the spirit of the Law: not to demand rigid adherence and conformity but seeking instead mutual understanding, forgiveness and reconciliation; not to be satisfied with condemning the sinful and fallen but to bring forth resurrection from the ashes of their sin through understanding and reconciliation. Confronting the demons of the world must begin with confronting the demons in our own hearts: We cannot lift the fallen until we realize that we, too, are fallen; we cannot raise others to health and hope until we seek our own healing; we cannot pass sentence on others until we judge our own lives. Fr. Mike Faith Direct Off To A Great Start Here At St. Peter s The response to our new e-giving initiative, Faith Direct has been wonderful. After only a few short weeks over 110 parishioners have signed up with the program! Of those 110 parishioners, approximately 80 are online givers from our former program and approximately 30 are new families who have either switched from using envelopes or are using e-giving here at St. Peter s for the first time! We are thrilled with the response so far and encourage all parishioners to consider using Faith Direct when making contributions to the parish. It s safe, it s convenient and it works! Bethlehem Handicrafts April 13/14 From the birthplace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Christian community is seeking your love and support through obtaining their handmade olive wood religious articles. These items will be displayed in the Gathering Space after all masses next weekend, April 13th and 14th. The custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special Easter fast during the Triduum. Easter was the first day when meat, eggs, and other foods could again be eaten. Swieconka (sh-vee-soon-kah) is one of the most enduring and beloved Eastern European traditions. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter food are brought to the church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood, the typical Easter evergreen. Special pride is taken in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket with crisp linens, occasionally embroidered for the occasion, and just enough boxwood and ribbon woven through the handle. Observing the foods and creations of other parishioners is one of the special joys of the event. Please join us by bringing your baskets of meats, breads, baked goods, eggs, chocolates, and jelly beans for a blessing. 6 Easter Spiritual Bouquet The Easter Vigil Mass and all Masses on Easter Sunday will be offered for all those enrolled in the Spiritual Bouquet. Gift Mass Cards are available for both the living and deceased. Names of those enrolled will be placed in the Sanctuary for Easter and will be remembered at all Easter masses. Report Abuse The Archdiocese of Newark takes very seriously any and all complaints of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform the Archdiocese immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Although we will report all allegations of abuse immediately to the appropriate County Prosecutor, we encourage anyone with an allegation of abuse also to reach out to the prosecutor. 7 In the St. Peter s Parking Lot Catholic Charities Clothing Bin The Easter season is upon us and the universal Church is rejoicing. Some people, however, have difficulty experiencing these joys due to their circumstances in life. Catholic Charities aims to help relieve the suffering of many in our society through its various programs. Please help Catholic Charities continue its mission by donating your unwanted clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, and books (no reference books) to the donation bin located on our property. May the spirit of the Risen Christ resound through your generosity. Thank you. Important Announcement Continuing Caution Concerning and Texting Scams There has been an increase in the number of fraudulent s across the country. Financial losses can exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars and are often uninsured. Recently we have received notification of and text scams that will use the name of a pastor to solicit funds in the form of gift cards or cash donations. The usually includes no recipients name, and asks for financial help for a worthy cause. The pastor s name concludes the request. Several of our pastors have already heard from parishioners who have received s or text messages, seemingly from the pastor, asking for donations. Our parishes and schools do not raise money in this manner so please exercise the utmost caution when receiving this type of communication. Law enforcement agencies urge parishioners to question any or text that doesn t come from a person in their contacts. If a pastor s name is used, parishioners should contact the parish to verify the legitimacy of the appeal. Anyone who feels that they have been the victim of this type of scam is urged to contact their local police department.
