2 The Deacon s Corner celebrating 50 years of the diaconate Who Do You Say That I Am? That s the question that Jesus asks his disciples in today s Gospel. As we heard, the disciples give Jesus some wrong answers but it is St. Peter who gives Jesus the correct theological answer. But I think that Jesus is asking you and me personally: Who Do You Say That I Am? I know that Jesus asked me that question many times. I began my formation classes on the evening of September 10 th, The next day was September 11th. I was asking Jesus who are you? And why did you let that happen? Somehow, for me, the two dates are related. Then the next year, in 2002, the Boston Globe published reports of the priest sex scandal. I asked the questions again. Then this summer we read about the abuse of children in Pennsylvania and of seminarians by a former Cardinal. Many souls have been irreparably and mortally wounded by priests of the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict has said: The greatest persecution of the church doesn t come from enemies on the outside but is born from the sins within the church. He then speaks of the general obscuring of God and affirm that eclipse of God does not at all mean that God is no longer there, but that many people no longer recognize God because in front of the Lord there are shadows that obscure him. All of this is the work of Satan. Today it is the shadows of sins, misdeeds and crimes from within the Church that obscure to many the sight of his luminous presence. Not even the satanic events of September 11 will be able to weaken or destroy the truth about that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. Also that this time of great crisis, may be above all as a time of grace; because in the end what will set us free will be no particular effort, but the truth, as the Lord has promised us. Maybe that is the answer to who Jesus is asking Who Do You Say That I Am? Deacon Andy Golden Saturday Morning Mass Location Change!!! St. Peter s Rosary Society Monday, September 17 The Rosary Society welcomes all parishioners to our first meeting on Monday, September 17 at 7:15pm in the Parish Center. We will pray the rosary together, followed by our guest speaker, Fr. John Radwan. The Rosary Society continues to be a very social, friendly group who happen to have a special devotion to Mary. Group Children s Clothing Swap September 21 and 22 The M.O.M.S. group biannual children's clothing swap will take place on Saturday, September 22nd, from 9am- 12pm in the Parish Center. Parents are invited to shop for gently used children's and maternity clothes. Donations will be accepted on Friday, September 21st, from 3-7pm in the Parish Center. Walk-In Dinner Ministry October 4, 2018 Six times a year our parish provides dinner to the poor and homeless at the Bergen County Human Resources Services Center in Hackensack. Our next hosting date is Thursday, October 4. We can always use additional people willing to occasionally heat up frozen lasagna and meatballs. The food is delivered to your home on Wednesday early afternoon for you heat up on Thursday and bring to the church parking lot that afternoon. For more info call Marge Haggerty or margity@verizon.net The Catholic s Divorce Healing Program Begins October 15 St. Peter s is pleased to announce the return of an exciting program for men and women who have suffered from divorce. The Catholic s Divorce Survival Guide is a 6 -week program featuring 30-minute DVD sessions each week that cover topics of shock, denial, anger, grief, forgiveness, money, the courts, the kids, the ex-spouse, annulment, dating, sexuality, spirituality, remarriage or staying single and much more. Music Ministry Notes from Jim Adult Choir (11:00 Mass): NOW is the time to take that step and join the choir! The Adult Choir is welcoming new members to be part of our vibrant music ministry. Music reading skills are desirable, but not necessary. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7:30 9:00 pm in the church. High School students even if you can t make all/many rehearsals, please come and sing with us on Sundays. Children s Choir (9:30 Mass): Calling all Kids! Our choir year is just getting underway and we welcome new members to join us! We rehearse on Sundays at 9:10 am and approximately twice/month on Tuesdays from 3:30 4:30. All elementary students 1st grade and older are invited to participate. Saturday: 1-11 PM Sunday: 1-8 PM Ministry to the Ill and Homebound Information and Discernment Gathering You are invited to a special information and discernment gathering to prayerfully consider becoming a Minister to the Ill and Homebound. A gratifying ministry, the homebound eagerly anticipate a visit and appreciate the fact that the Eucharist is taken to them and shared by a compassionate member of St. Peters. It is truly a mutually fulfilling exchange! The time commitment is a minimum of one visit per month. Making visits is something that each individual minister works out with the parishioner they are visiting. Training for this ministry is provided. A seasoned minister will gladly accompany you to your visits, if you desire. A few reminders: Open to the public on Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Located in the back parking lot. Acceptable bin donations include used clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals and books (no reference books). If the bin is full, do not leave donations outside the bin. As stated on the bin, this is considered littering and punishable by law. Large items which do not fit in the bins, and furniture, are not accepted. 7 Outside St. Peter s The 2018 River Edge Farmers Market runs Tuesdays through October 31st from 2:00-7:00 PM at The American Legion (215 Continental Avenue) parking lot. The market offers locally grown produce, the highest quality baked goods, and artisanal foods. Anderson Farms of Sussex New Jersey donates the leftover produce to the St. Peter's Parish Food Pantry. Catholic School Open Houses Immaculate Heart Academy will be hosting its Fall Open House on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Discover how IHA empowers girls through excellence in academics, including a robust STEM curriculum, athletics, the arts, service, and much more. Through October 15, 2018 we will be collecting plastic at the River Edge Library, Roosevelt School, Cherry Hill School and St. Peter the Apostle parish (bin can be found in the gathering space). If we collect a minimum of 500 lbs of plastic film and bags. (On average, a 30-gallon trash bag will hold about 650 plastic bags and weigh 8 lbs.) the town will receive a Trex bench.
