2 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Folks, The apostles return from their first mission of preaching and healing and report to Jesus. He gathers them in a deserted place, but the people find them and keep coming. Even their attempt to escape by boat to the other side of the lake is foiled once word gets out. This incident recorded by Mark in today s Gospel offers two important insights into our Church s ministry: that the mission of the Church does not spring from mass marketing techniques or publicity strategies but from the Gospel of compassion we seek to live and share, from the authority of our commitment to forgiveness and reconciliation; and that leadership, inspired by the wisdom of God, means not dictating and ruling over others but inspiring, providing for and selflessly caring for those whom we are called to lead. In our heeding those shepherds in our society and culture who promise us only the best, who affirm and rationalize our fears, who give us enemies to direct our fear and their promise to vanquish them for us, who reduce the complexities of life to simple rules and absolutes, we are the shepherdless for whom Jesus heart breaks. In Christ, God has raised up for us a shepherd to guide us in God s ways of compassion and reconciliation; a shepherd to lead us safely along life s rough crags and dangerous drop-offs to God s pasture of peace and fulfillment; a shepherd who helps us clear the obstacles and hurdles of fear and self-interest to live lives centered in what is right and just. From the clamor of the marketplace and the demands of our calendars and to do lists, we need deserted, out-of-the-way places to be alone with God, to listen to the quiet of our hearts to hear the voice of God. Fr. Mike Baptisms will be celebrated at Mass on the following weekends: August 11/12, September 15/16, October 13/14, November 17/18, December 15/16. Parents may choose the 5:30, 9:30, 11:00 or 12:30 Mass. 5 Our Parish Family Shares As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace: 1 Peter 4:10 God s Word for Children Are You Going On Vacation? Many of our parish families are planning to get away for some summer fun and relaxation in the next few months. We pray that your vacation time will be safe and a source of many happy memories. However, please do not take your parish offering with you. Each summer our parish office struggles to juggle the bills as Sunday offerings decrease significantly. If you find that you tend to forget your envelope more often during the less structured weeks of summer, please consider our electronic giving program. Go to giving-to-st-peters. It s simple! It s safe! And it keeps God at the top of your giving list even when you are away! Special Collection Aug 4/5 Missionary Society of St. Paul Mission Appeal - August 4/5 Our church is missionary by nature. Each of us as baptized Catholics are called to share in the work of evangelization. The Archdiocese of Newark collaborates with mission groups every year to raise fund for their missions through a program called the Missionary Cooperative Plan. The group assigned to our parish this year is the Missionary Society of St. Paul. Fr. Cosmas Nwosuh, MSP will be speaking to us from the Missionary Society of St Paul on the weekend of August 4/5. There will be a second collection to support them in their work. The Missionary Society of St. Paul (MSP) is a congregation of priests founded in Nigeria in The Society now has 268 priests. They are working in ten countries of Africa, (South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Cameroon, Liberia, Chad, The Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya and Southern Sudan), Grenada in the West Indies, the United States, England, Sweden and Ireland. They also have about 127 seminarians in their seminary in Nigeria. Their mission in Malawi provides rehabilitation and support for over 300 orphans who lost their parents due to AIDS. They need our financial assistance to continue this mission. They also need funds to: 1) provide fresh water wells, and education in rural communities of Chad, Malawi, South Sudan, Kenya and Nigeria; 2) Sponsoring seminarians, our future priests; 3) Supporting priests in the founding/ building of new churches. Your support to this worthy cause will be an immense encouragement to the Missionary Society of St. Paul to as they continue to take the good news to those desperately in need of it. May God bless you! Find out more about them on July 22, Articles to: bulletin@saint-peter.org Deadline: Tuesdays - 3 PM Page 5

6 JustSteps: Catholic Social Teaching Prayer For and By Refugees (We invite you to join into the migrant experience through these prayers): O God, Open our eyes that we may see the needs of others; Open our ears that we may hear their cries; Open our hearts that we may feel their anguish and their joy. Let us not be afraid to defend the oppressed, the poor, the powerless because of the anger and might of the powerful. Show us where love and hope and faith are needed, and use us to bring them to those places. Open our ears and eyes, our hearts and lives, that we may in these coming days be able to do some work of justice and peace for you. Amen. (from The Sabeel Center, Jerusalem) You Deserve a Break July is often remembered for its excessive heat, picnics with relatives and friends and of course, time at the beach.
