2 LUKE BIBLE INTENSIVE Join Pastor Janet on Wednesday s from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary, First Evangelical Center. Bring a Bible and a notebook. Join us each week or when you are able. The scheduled topics are: November 9: The Death and Resurrection of Jesus November 16: The next chapter: The Luke/Acts Journey FROM THE FIRST CHURCH STEPHEN MINISTRY TEAM Over the last few weeks, we ve shared thoughts on praying with others, including the WHY and the WHEN so HOW do we pray with others? An important part of prayer is being honest with God. As Kenneth C. Haugk points out in Christian Caregiving: A Way of Life: Some people think they have to clean up their thoughts when they talk to God Martin Luther s first rule of prayer is Don t lie to God. Feel free to share all emotions and experiences with God. God is loving and understanding and wants honesty from us, not prettied-up piety. God is always here, ready to listen to what is on our hearts. Don t be afraid to pray with others You may just be the vessel that someone else needs to bring his or her needs and concerns to our loving God. TEACH HEARTS, HANDS, AND PAWS AT PANERA BREAD Join members of First Church's Pet Ministry for supper and fellowship on Thursday, November 10 th, 6:00 p.m. at Panera Bread. We'd love to hear stories about your pets and talk about our pet ministry: "serving God by serving people who love pets." Questions? Call Ann Wilson: BIBLES FOR GENESIS HOUSE Genesis House Drug and Alcohol Counseling Service of Williamsport is in need of Bibles for their Christian based groups. If you have an extra Bible you are willing to donate, please drop it off at the Church office. Used is fine (if in good condition). It can be any translation. 3 ACTS NETWORK What is the new normal for North American church? This question might be elusive if we aren't asking the question. The reality we face however is that roughly 50% of America does not consider themselves Christian. Also, the share of Americans who say they are absolutely certain God exists has dropped more sharply, from 71% in 2007 to 63% in In some ways we might find this concerning, but this also opens new possibilities of how to share the Gospel with our neighbors. The Acts Network is one of First Church's effort to do exactly this. If you are interested in talking about this topic and perhaps how God might be calling you into this ministry please contact Mitch Marcello at or by phone at (570) CONTACT INFO. NEEDED If you have any contact information (address, telephone number, or address) for any of the following church members, please let the church office know by calling or by ing Pastor D.G. Giordano at Alyssa Ficacci, Alexis Sampson, Cliff Shenuski, Bryan Thompson. Thank you. FALL OUTDOOR CLEAN-UP! Join us November 19 th at 9:00 a.m. at the fountain of the First Evangelical Center. We will be working on both the FEC and the NC. FOOD! BEVERAGES! TEAMWORK! Bring rakes, tarps, leaf blowers, and a friend! BE THERE! Rain date: Sunday, November 20 th at 12:30 p.m. Contact Ken Durrwachter for information and to reserve your tubesteak. (Church youth are doing the CLC - see Josh for details). THANKSGIVING FOOD BAG COLLECTION It is time for our annual food drive so the Food Pantry can provide baskets for those in need this Thanksgiving. 4 Sermon Outline Humble Power: God s Idea of Power Mark 5:21-43 First Church, Pastor s Page A Legacy of Faith I. The focus of this series is to ask God to Revive of who we are. II. What is the internal spiritual dynamic that makes a church biblically normal? III. Pattern for Revival A. The church faces some great B. The C. We see a ( D. The result of revival is a community 1. Vital Worship--Acts 2:37, Deep Teaching--Acts 2:42 3. Devoted Fellowship--Acts 2:42 4. Compassionate Social Concern--Acts 2: Committed Prayer--Acts 2:42 IV. Misperceptions of Revival A. Too B. Too V. What allows us to be passive AND active at the same time? VI. Pray for two things: 1) and 2) Action Steps 1) Come to early morning prayer at 6:00 a.m. at the North Campus 2) Sign up on the communication card to pray during a worship service on November 13 or November 20. 3) Daily prayer: Lord, we beg you, revive all of who we are. Create in us an urgency for you. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us. Amen. Scripture Reflection: Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Today we celebrate the lives of a number of loved ones connected with First Church who have passed on into glory over the past year. We call this Sunday All Saints Sunday as we remember those who have left legacies of faith for us. Days like today are bittersweet. On the one hand there is a sense of sadness to no longer have loved ones physically present with us who have meant so much to us. On the other hand, we rejoice at the legacy of faith these folks have left behind, as well as their impact on the lives of so many. Please keep the family members of these saints in your prayers today as they come once again to remember and celebrate their lives. As we celebrate these lives today I am reminded of the impact that one life can have on another. I m also reminded how every moment counts and that we all only get a certain amount of time to make a difference. Obviously none of us are guaranteed forever. So often we go about life as if we have all the time in the world. And yet the truth is, time is always limited. Because of that, time is always of the essence. As we reflect on those who have left a legacy of faith, I want to ask us as a church, What legacy of faith are we leaving? Are we making every day count to build up the kingdom of God? Is there a sense of urgency in how we live to share the Gospel with a world that increasingly does not know the love of Jesus? Or are we simply going through the motions seeking out our own comfort over what it might mean to truly love our neighbors with the love of Christ? What would it look like in our lives to begin living urgently to share the love of Christ with others? What would need to change in a tangible way? Getting past our own comforts can be a formidable challenge. But when we realize that we really only get one chance on this earth, compared with the vastness of all of eternity, we realize how important it is to make each day count... as those who have gone before us have modeled. Today we thank God for the saints who have gone before us. May we, like them, passionately and urgently leave a legacy of faith. In Christ, Pastor Matt
