Giving Opportunities Below is a list of the various funds and their purposes to which we can contribute and help support the proclamation of the gospel both locally and around the world. CLC funds General fund: Offerings to missions (CLC-CBP) support the day-to-day operations of both the CLC mission program and Immanuel Lutheran College. Messiah has made missions contributions a part of our regular budget. Mission Development Fund (MDF): This fund supports mission projects which are normally limited-term, such as buying Bibles and Catechisms, roofing foreign churches, and purchasing motorcycles and bicycles for pastors. Immanuel Improvement Fund (IIF): Money in this fund is used for major campus maintenance projects, as well as other needs which are not part of the regular operating budget. ILC Student Aid Fund (ILC SAF): This fund provides loans and grants to students in both the high school and college departments. The fund is available to all ILC students synod-wide, not just those from Messiah. ILC Building Fund: The fund was established for the construction of an academic center. There is a continuing need for contributions to pay the mortgage. Kinship: This fund supports orphans and seminary students in both Africa and India. Messiah funds General offerings: Offerings to the general fund support the majority of our programs, as well as maintain our buildings and property. Our congregational CLC contributions also come from the general fund. The CLC general fund supports both Immanuel Lutheran College and our domestic and foreign mission programs. Messiah Student Aid Fund (MSAF): This fund directly assists families who are members of Messiah by offering tuition aid for children attending Immanuel Lutheran High School or College. Once a year the available funds are applied to the accounts of Messiah members at ILC. Christian Day School Improvement Fund (CDSIF): Money received into this fund is used to purchase items useful to the school which are not covered by the regular budget. Traveling Vacation Bible School Fund (TVBS): The is the most recently established Messiah fund. Money received is used to support VBS efforts in other CLC congregations. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart 11
Announcements Thank you! Special thanks to all who distributed VBS flyers last Saturday. Meeting today The annual voters meeting gets underway after second service. All voters are encouraged to attend. Others, as well, are welcome to come and observe. It s here! Vacation Bible School begins tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. There is still time to invite friends to join us. The joy of the simple life It seems that more and more people are discovering that a fulfilling life is not about filling it as full as possible with possessions and activities. De-cluttering and simplifying have become trendy. But for true happiness it takes more than just getting rid of things. Beginning at this Wednesday s Bible class, we will look to the Lord for guidance and help to simplify in the way which will enable us to truly live life to the full. Friendship Sunday Looking Ahead DMonday: 9:00 A.M: VBS begins. 7:00 P.M: Tech Committee. DTuesday: 6:30 P.M: Outreach Committee. DWednesday: 7:00 P.M: Bible class. DThursday: 11:00 A.M: Arbor View Bible class. DNext Sunday: Friendship Sunday and church picnic. Next Sunday is Friendship Sunday. There will be only one service which will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by the congregational picnic. What a joy and privilege not only to receive the good news of forgiveness ourselves, but to be sent out to share it with everyone we possibly can! Do you have a friend, classmate, co-worker, or neighbor whom you could tell about the Savior who died for them? Flyers are below the mailboxes. Help yourself. Food, fun, sun, and fellowship... Come to the church picnic next Sunday after the worship service! The location is Calhoun Park in New Berlin. Pork sandwiches, hot dogs, soda, water, lemonade, and disposable dinnerware will be provided. Your help in providing side dishes, salads, and desserts is appreciated. See the signup sheet on the cupboard doors. Bring lawn chairs, table coverings, and softball equipment if you would like to join the game. Mike Cutler will be providing music. Others, too, are invited to share their musical gifts. A keyboard will be available and you may also bring your own instruments. Contact Mike by tomorrow with questions and/or to be added to the list (mcutler108@gmail.com). Schiermeister update Peggy Schiermeister and her two young daughters have relocated to Bismarck, ND, to live with relatives for the time being. They have been overwhelmed by the widespread spiritual and material support received from fellow believers across the country. Please keep them in your prayers during this difficult time of healing and transition. P: Praise be to the LORD forever! C: Amen and Amen. Hymn 15: From All that Dwell Below the Skies Confession and Absolution: P: O God our Father, since You have set forth the way of life for us in Your beloved Son, we confess with shame our slowness to learn of Him, our failure to follow Him, and our reluctance to bear the cross. C: Have mercy on us and forgive us, O Lord. P: Forgive us the poverty of our worship, our neglect of fellowship and of the Means of Grace, our hesitating witness for Christ, our evasion of responsibility in Your service, and our imperfect stewardship of Your gifts. C: Have mercy on us and forgive us, O God. P: Forgive us that so little of Your love has reached others through us, that we have been thoughtless in our judgments, hasty in condemnation, grudging in forgiveness, slow to seek reconciliation, and unwilling to help our neighbors as we ought. C: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your steadfast love. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: May the God of peace sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. 9 2
difficulties. We ask for Your loving care in behalf of Jennifer Tomlin, sister of Marcy Gurgel, who will undergo cancer surgery Friday. Send Your holy angels to protect her from harm. Bless the surgery with Your healing for her body. Especially give peace and comfort to her heart through the gospel of forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus her Savior. This coming week is filled with uncertainty. We cannot even see into the next hour. Yet we have no cause for concern for we know who we are and to whom we belong. By grace we are Yours now and forever, and nothing can separate us from Your love. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Hymn 409: Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus Prayer: P: Almighty God, by the working of Your Holy Spirit, grant that we may gladly hear Your Word proclaimed among us and follow its directing; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lord s Prayer: Old Testament lesson: Jeremiah 28:5-9.There are many religious teachers who make great promises, but those promises are deceptive and worthless if they never come true. God s promises of peace and life in Jesus are eternally true. Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of the LORD, and the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen! The LORD do so; the LORD perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the Closing prayer: P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we give You thanks for all the goodness that You bestow on us. We implore You to give us a right understanding of all Your mercies that our hearts may ever be deeply grateful and that we may show forth Your praise with our lips and our lives. Send us forth now into this new week renewed in body and spirit to joyfully serve You in the pursuit of all that is good and holy and as witnesses to Your grace. In Your name we confidently pray. Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Hymn 51: Now May He Who From the Dead 3 8
Offering and hymn verse (TLH: 351:1) Love Divine, all love excelling, Joy of heav n, to earth come down, Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter ev ry trembling heart. LORD S house and all who were carried away captive, from Babylon to this place. Nevertheless hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms of war and disaster and pestilence. As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent. Pastor: plain type. Cong: underlined, boldface type. Responsive Prayer Dear Lord God: Your ways and thoughts are so much higher than ours that we would have no conception of them unless You had revealed them to us in Your holy Word. Your boundless love for billions of sinners is far beyond any human expectations. That Your Son would come to earth to live and die in our behalf, that we might receive full forgiveness and be justified before You is the message which gives comfort for today, hope for tomorrow, and the certainty of a glorious future with You. We bring You our prayers, hymns, and offerings in grateful praise for making us who we are: Your baptized children, dead to sin and alive to You in Christ. By Word and Sacrament keep us close to You in faith. Protect us from pride and complacency which would lead us to think that we don t need to keep hearing Your Word or that our fellowship with one another is not that important to our souls wellbeing. As we are new people in Christ, work in us a greater desire to serve You and those around us in love. Give the voters of the congregation joy in taking up all the various aspects of the commission You have entrusted to us. Guide the elections of our church boards today and provide us with leaders who will faithfully use their gifts to Your glory. Remind us all that even when we do not see outward progress, our labor in Your name is never in vain. Bless the students, teachers, and helpers of our Vacation Bible School this week. Strengthen the faith of all through the news of Christ crucified, and inspire children and adults to thankfully use their talents for the good of others. Lord, You have graciously given us health, daily bread, homes, and many other earthly gifts to sustain us. Continue to provide for us as You know best. We pray also for those who are sick or burdened by other 7 4
Gospel lesson: Matthew 10:34-42.Love for the Lord means taking a stand on the truth of His Word, even when it causes conflict with others. Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law ; and a man s enemies will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward. The Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Sermon: Romans 6:1-11 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. BE YOURSELF! I. Dead to sin. II. Alive to God. Hymn 437: Who Trusts in God, a Strong Abode 5 6
