Special thanks to the anniversary committee and the many others who helped make last weekend s celebration of our school s 25th anniversary a great success. Delegate conference The Great Lakes Delegate Conference begins tomorrow at Faith Lutheran Church, Markesan, WI. Pastor and Mr. Quade will be attending, along with delegates James Arndt and Andrew Albrecht. Absalom: God s tool for chastening Wednesday s Bible class continues our study of people in David s life. This week we will consider how God used David s son Absalom to chasten David. Next Sunday s service Next Sunday there will be only one service so that all of us can join in wishing the Mielke family the Lord s blessings as they make the move to Eau Claire. The service will be at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship. Check the signup sheet on the cupboard doors for needed food items. Spokesman subscriptions deadline next Sunday Due to increased circulation, the Lutheran Spokesman is able to offer substantial savings on new subscriptions and renewals. Renewals are $10 for 12 issues and new subscriptions are only $5! If you haven t seen the Spokesman recently, take a look at the sample issues in the tract rack. Each issue has a wealth of Christian reading material: devotional articles, Bible studies, and news updates from sister CLC congregations and foreign affiliates. It also makes a great gift for anyone with whom you would like to share the gospel. The signup sheet is on the bulletin board. Even though we submit a bulk order, issues are home-delivered. Many of us look forward to summer vacations as a time to get away, unwind, and recharge. Of course, we never want to use vacation as time away from God and the needed refreshment of His Word. If you re away from home on a Sunday, consider visiting a nearby sister CLC congregation. Or if that isn t possible, our services are always available on ustream and YouTube. Another aspect of our worship is our offerings by which we express our love for the Savior, our trust in His provision of our daily bread, and our desire to support the work of the gospel here at Messiah 10

2 and through our joint work in the CLC. If you are not able to be at worship one or more weeks, you can still follow Paul s directive in 1 Cor. 16:2 and set aside a weekly offering for a future Sunday. Baseball champs The Immanuel High School boys' baseball team won their regional title with a 10-0 win over Clear Lake. 4 Confession and Absolution P: If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? C: But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared. C: But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared. P: If God were to mark our iniquities and sins, we would be left without hope. Since the time of the first sin of Adam and Eve, we are, by nature, sinful and unclean. We sin continually. But our loving Lord does not leave us without hope. He has given us redemption through His Son. With this confidence, we seek our heavenly Father s grace for the sake of Jesus Christ. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P: O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with Him is plentiful redemption. Receive this plentiful redemption through faith in Christ. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. The Invitation: P: In His mercy Jesus, the Lord your God, has become your refuge. By His Spirit He is near you and now invites you to His Supper. In the eating of the bread you receive the very body of Christ, and in the drinking of the cup you receive the blood of Christ. Here is where you can take refuge. Here in His presence is where you find fullness of joy. Come to the Lord s table and be nourished and strengthened! The Distribution. (Hymn below and 755 in the Worship Supplement if needed) The Gifts Christ Freely Gives Prayer P: Almighty God, grant that we who have been redeemed from the old life of sin through Baptism into the death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, may be renewed in Your Holy Spirit and live in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Epistle Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:5-18 By faith we keep our eyes focused on Jesus and the eternal life He won for us. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 5 In the week ahead guide us to make decisions in accord with Your will. Encourage us in times of disappointment. Help us see Your many gifts for body and soul and to thank You for them. Lord s Prayer The Rite of Confirmation (second service) the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you. And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, I believed and therefore I spoke, we also believe and therefore speak, knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. And He said, Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father. From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 6 The Apostles Creed (first service) C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. Be Strong and Courageous! I. The Lord is with you. II. Success is Guaranteed. P: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen. Offering I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Dear Lord God: We come to You with hearts full of praise for Your grace which gives meaning to the present and certain hope for the future. Through Jesus saving work You have given us, who are by nature dead in sin, new life by faith. Sermon: Joshua 1:1-9 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses assistant, saying: Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. We thank You especially for the faith You have created and sustained in our confirmand, Joanna Gerbitz. How encouraging to hear her profess trust in Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Give all of us the joy and courage to do the same whenever and wherever we have opportunity. Through Your means of grace preserve and strengthen us in the one true faith. We thank You, as well, for granting eternal life with You in glory to Lois Strader and Dick Laakaniemi. Even as we miss their presence among us, we rejoice that they are safely home where we will join them one day. We ask Your blessing for the Great Lakes Delegate Conference which begins tomorrow at Faith, Markesan. Provide safe travel for all attending. By Your Word work an ever growing appreciation for our salvation and the privilege of serving You in Your kingdom. Forgive our sins and refresh our souls through Jesus body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine of the sacrament. May we come to Your table with repentant hearts and leave with new strength from the Spirit to live for You in all we do. 5 6
