Greeting: Today's Worship Let us fix our eyes on Jesus... (Heb. 12:2). Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ: In the five weeks of Lent, we have been preparing for this week, for the events of our Lord s death and resurrection. The great and wondrous mystery now lies before us as we enter with Christ with palms and hosannas before He confronts the cross. Everything in Lent points to this week. As we commemorate how our Lord entered to the welcome of palms and hosannas, we also remember His death, which gives us life, and His resurrection, through which we dwell with Him for all eternity. The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. We gather outside for the procession with palms. Announcements Holy Week services Our observance of Holy Week will continue with a Maundy Thursday Communion service at 7:00 p.m. On Good Friday we will hold our customary tenebrae service. Tenebrae is a Latin term meaning shadows, darkness. This service is an ancient form of worship dating from the fourth century. The tone is very somber as candles are extinguished, and the sanctuary is gradually darkened to remind worshipers of the three hours of darkness which blanketed the earth during Christ s crucifixion as He suffered the punishment of being forsaken by God for our sins. The darkness of Good Friday prepares us for the brilliant dawning of Easter. Remember: The Good Friday tenebrae begins at 8:00 p.m. Resurrection joy! There is only one service next Sunday: 8:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to stay after the service for a brunch served by the men of the congregation. Check the list on the cupboard doors for items which are still needed. Remembrance Lilies: We would like to decorate the altar with lilies on Easter Sunday in celebration of Christ s resurrection and also in memory of loved ones who have died in the Lord and who, in light of Easter, will surely rise again in glory at Christ s return. If you would like to provide a lily in memory of a loved one, let Pastor know and he will include the names in the Easter bulletin. Call received... I have received the call to teach grades three and four at Messiah Lutheran in Eau Claire. I recognize this call as divine and will give it prayerful consideration. 3 P: That the Lord receive the offerings we bring, with the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, as testament of our faith and as sign of our gratitude, let us pray to the Lord. P: That the Lord bless His Church, those who minister in His name, and all the baptized people of God in their vocations of worship, witness, intercession, and service, let us pray to the Lord. P: That God visit His grace to us and to all nations, that we may have good leaders and that we may be good citizens, until the day we join the saints before the Lord in His eternal city, where He has prepared for us an everlasting place, let us pray to the Lord. Prayer: P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. (minute of silence for personal meditation and prayer) P: That the humility of our Lord s suffering and death bring forth in us the fruits of faith and renewed faithfulness for us and for all who hear His Word today, let us pray to the Lord. P: That the sufferings of Christ in our place not only strengthen us in faith but give us courage to proclaim His salvation to the ends of the earth, let us pray to the Lord. 2. And yet He comes. The children cheer; With palms His path is strown. With ev ry step the cross draws near The King of glory s throne. Astride a colt He passes by As loud hosannas ring, Or else the very stones would cry Behold, behold your King! P: That the wounds of the sick, the suffering, the grieving, and the dying find healing in the wounds of Christ our Lord, let us pray to the Lord. 3. What fading flow rs His road adorn; The palms how soon laid down! No bloom or leaf but only thorn The King of glory s crown. The soldiers mock, the rabble cries, The streets with tumult ring, As Pilate to the mob replies, Behold, behold your King! P: That Jesus gracious humility in giving us His righteousness as our baptismal clothing and His flesh and blood as our spiritual food equip us with all that we need to do the good works of faith, let us pray to the Lord. 4. Now He who bore for mortals sake The cross and all its pains And chose a servant s form to take, The King of glory reigns. Hosanna to the Savior s name Till heaven s rafters ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim Behold, behold your King! P: That by His gracious example of humility unto death we learn humility of faith, repent of our sin and unrighteousness, and learn to delight in His will and walk in His ways all the days of our lives, let us pray to the Lord. Confession and Absolution: P: Blessed Lord, who always comes among Your people for good, C: we confess to You that we are conceived and born sinful and both by nature and choice have turned away from You. We have enthroned self-interest and pride as our kings, and they have ruled us as tyrants. We have failed to acknowledge Your rightful lordship in our lives. Forgive us for Jesus sake, and by the power of the Holy Spirit turn our hearts this day to worship and follow Jesus, the one true King of kings and Lord of lords. P: That the Holy Spirit guide Mrs. Mielke in the consideration of her call, that He would lead her to a clear understanding of where He would have her serve the Lord Jesus, and that the Father s will be done, let us pray to the Lord. 3 8

5 From Cross to Crown: Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. P: The King has won your freedom. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Hymn: Sing, My Tongue, The Glorious Battle The humble King of kings: Mark 11: Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; and He said to them, Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. And if anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? say, The Lord has need of it, and immediately he will send it here. 7 4

6 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. But some of those who stood there said to them, What are you doing, loosing the colt? And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! Our confession of faith: Pastor: Like the planting of a seed, Christ gave Himself to death and burial that He might be raised and bring new life to all mankind. Living in this trust and hope, we confess our faith: C: Our doctrine, faith, and confession is as follows: The divine and human natures in Christ are personally united. So there are not two Christs, one the Son of God and the other the Son of Man. But one and the same person is the Son of God and Son of Man. So we believe, teach, and confess that Mary conceived and bore not merely a man and no more, but God s true Son. We also believe, teach, and confess that it was not a mere man who suffered, died, and was buried, descended into hell, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and was raised to God s majesty and almighty power for us. But it was a man whose human nature has such a profound, indescribable union and communion with God s Son that it is one person with Him. We believe, teach, and confess that the Son of Man really is exalted. He is (in deed and truth) exalted according to His human nature to the right hand of God s almighty majesty and power. Christ is and remains to all eternity God and man in one undivided person. Next to the Holy Trinity, this is the highest mystery, upon which our only consolation, life, and salvation depends.
