Today s Sunday school Through a series of horrific plagues God punished the Egyptians for their sinful treatment of His people and freed Israel from slavery. Through His horrific suffering and death on the cross, Jesus endured the punishment for our sin and freed us from its bondage. Ask your children: What does it mean to be freed from the slavery of sin? Tell about the plagues and the power of God Almighty. Voters meet today The quarterly voters meeting will get underway after second service. All voters are encouraged to attend. Non-voters are also welcome to come and observe. School support group The school support group meets tonight at 6:00. Hear the latest news from the school and learn how you can help with the education of our students. Babysitting will be available. It is always a wonderful boost to one s faith to celebrate the gifts of the Reformation along with fellow believers from sister congregations. A priceless blessing! This past Thursday the Lord blessed the Josh and Sarah Serba family with the birth of a son, Malachi Thomas (7 lbs. 13 oz.; 20.5 in.). Church history tours On Friday, Nov. 2, the confirmation class will be touring four historic downtown churches: St. John s Lutheran, the Joan of Arc chapel, the Cathedral of St. John, and St. George Melkite Church. The first tour is at 9 a.m. You are welcome to join us. We need at least one more driver. Contact Pastor for more details. Save the date! At 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, we will be hosting a seminar on Christianity and Islam. Missionary David Koenig will be the presenter. The seminar will be held in the Garden House at Boerner Botanical Gardens, Hales Corners. Do you know someone whom you could invite? 3 Missions Prayer List Hymn 276 (red hymnal): Come Unto Me, Ye Weary 1. West Africa Visitation Missionary Ohlmann will be leaving for West Africa on Monday, October 22 nd. Please pray for safe and uneventful travels. Your prayers are also requested for his wife Beth and family while he is away for the next several weeks. 2. Togo, West Africa Missionary Ohlmann will be working with Pastor Kossi Blewu and the other pastors and students of the Mission Evangelique de Confession du Togo (MELC). He will spend fourteen days teaching pastoral training seminars and visiting congregations. He will also compile reports for the Kinship committee concerning the orphans, Bible students, and the Children In Need projects. 3. Nigeria, West Africa Following the visit to Togo, Missionary Ohlmann will travel to Nigeria to host the West Africa CLC Pastoral Conference in Badagry, Nigeria. Following the conference, he will travel to the Efa area in Akwa Ibom State where the NCLC Bible Institute, Children s Home, Headquarters, and most of the congregations are located. While in the Efa area he will conduct meetings with the various boards of the NCLC, visit congregations and pastors, and compile reports for the Kinship committee concerning the orphans and seminary students being sponsored. He will also meet with the newly formed NCLC Children s Home Board to consider future needs for the home and the children they care for. 4. West Africa CLC Pastoral Conference It has been several years since the CLC affiliated church bodies of West Africa have been able to gather for a conference. Through offerings to the CLC-Mission Development Fund (MDF) a conference is being funded for November 5-9 at Badagry, Nigeria. Forty pastors, students, and evangelists from Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Ghana, and Liberia will encourage each other in the Word and the Gospel ministry under the theme: The One Thing Needed. Pray also for safe travels as many of these men will be traveling from far distances in less than desirable conditions. 5. Tanzania the CLC Board of Missions recently approved MDF grants for books and dormitory construction and repairs along with funding for transportation to allow the CLC- Tanzania to continue to make preparations for classes to begin in January at the newly established Wartburg Lutheran Seminary in Arusha, Tanzania. There are currently twelve men from four districts who are planning to study God s word as they prepare for the ministry. Pray for both students and teachers that the Lord will bless this effort and that He will provide all that is necessary for this important work to go forward. 6. Myanmar Pastor Kham continues to suffer from an unknown illness that is causing clumps of hair to fall out. Pray that the doctors will find a cause and a cure and that this is not a symptom of a much more serious health problem. Confession and Absolution: P: Holy God, merciful Father, C: Often we turn away from the peace You promise to Your children. Forgive us for the ways in which our thoughts, words, and actions go against Your will for our lives. For our neglect of You and Your gift of grace, we ask for mercy. In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, whose work on the cross has secured our place in Your kingdom, renew us and lead us that we may rest in Your presence. Amen. P: Jesus says, Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Receive His rest. As a called and ordained servant of the Word, I announce the grace of God to you; and in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 9 2

4 Prayer: P: O God, our Creator, You set in order all things in heaven and on earth for the benefit of Your children. Grant that we rest from our labors and receive the peace Your Son has given; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lord s Prayer: Old Testament lesson: Isaiah 53:10-12.By His suffering and death, Jesus won perfect rest for sinners burdened with guilt. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Closing prayer: P: Thank You, Lord God, for nourishing our souls on this journey of earthly life with the food of everlasting life in Your holy Word. Fortify us to leave here and engage the people in our lives with the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Use us to bring Your peace into the lives of those who need Your love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 6 Gospel lesson: Mark 10:35-45.True greatness is seeking God s glory, not one s own. Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask. And He said to them, What do you want Me to do for you? They said to Him, Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They said to Him, We are able. So Jesus said to them, You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. STRIVE FOR SABBATH REST! I. Don t follow the example of disobedience. II. Confess Christ as our great High Priest. The Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
