3 Closing prayer: Luther s Morning Prayer P: In the name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. C: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept all harm and danger away from me last night. And I pray that You would also protect me today from sin and every evil, that my life and all my behavior please You. Into Your hand I entrust my body and life and everything else. Let your holy angel be with me, that the devil may have no power over me. Amen. P: Come, behold the works of the Lord. C: He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. P: He will be exalted among the nations. C: He will be exalted in the earth. P: The Lord of hosts is with us; C: the God of Jacob is our fortress. Hymn 39 (red hymnal): Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen. Confession and Absolution: P: God indeed is our refuge and strength, our help and our fortress. Yet we often choose to flee from the refuge of the Lord. We abandon the strength and safety of God, trusting in our own strength and power. The apostle Paul writes that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And Jesus says that everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. As we enter the house of the Lord and call upon Him for His good and gracious gifts, let us consider our enslavement to sin and our continued shortcomings as God s people. Closing hymn 262 (red hymnal): A Mighty Fortress is Our God P: Heavenly Father, C: we have sinned against You in our thoughts, words, and actions. We have ignored neighbors in need. We have caused strife among others. We have sought refuge in the things of this world and not in You. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us back to You, our refuge and strength. P: While we have indeed fallen short of the glory of God, we are also justified by God s grace as a gift. Though we have been slaves to sin, God has set us free by the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. The Son has set us free, and we are free indeed. Amen. 9 2
4 Prayer: P: Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Along with our prayers, hymns, and praises, receive our offerings. May they serve in helping to send missionaries out to the world, in training future pastors and teachers, and in nourishing the faith of all of us here. Rather than taking pride in ourselves and our accomplishments, let us boast instead about Your loving care, Jesus willing sacrifice, and the Spirit s life-giving presence within us. In Jesus name. Amen. The Lord s Prayer: Hymn: Preserve Your Word, O Savior Old Testament lesson: Jeremiah 18:1-11.God called for a reformation of repentance among His people. The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying: Arise and go down to the potter s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words. Then I went down to the potter s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter? says the LORD. Look, as the clay is in the potter s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel! The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it. Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am fashioning a disaster and devising a plan against you. Return now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good. Sunday school children (second service): Seek Where You May to Find a Way 5 Preserve in wave and tempest Your storm-tossed little flock; Assailed by wind and weather, May it endure each shock. 5 Offering and hymn verse: God s Word is our great heritage And shall be ours forever; To spread its light from age to age Shall be our chief endeavor. Through life it guides our way, In death it is our stay. Lord, grant while worlds endure, We keep its teachings pure Throughout all generations. Prayer of the Church Pastor: plain type. Congregation: underlined, boldface type. Dear Lord God: You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness. When we were dead in sin and deserving of eternal death, You sent Jesus to be our righteousness. By faith we receive His holiness, and on the cross He suffered the penalty which was rightfully ours. Your justice is satisfied and You pronounce the world not guilty before You. We thank You, Lord, for using the Reformation to preserve the saving gospel truth. As You gave Martin Luther spiritual understanding and faith to trust in Jesus and not in his own goodness, so grant us faith to rely on Christ alone for our righteousness with You. As You gave Martin Luther courage to stand on Your Word in the face of threats and danger, please quiet our fears and give us boldness to confess You before classmates, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. May we always be ready to give a reason for the hope that we have. May our congregation and church body always remain true to You. May we never give in to the temptation to compromise Your Word in order not to offend others or avoid persecution. Bless the preaching and teaching of Your Word. Prosper our school and Sunday school, and by them prepare our young people to be Your witnesses to the next generation and beyond. When we fear for our faith or the future of Your church on earth, assure us that Your Word will endure to the end of time, and that You will continue to add souls to Your Holy Christian Church until Jesus returns to take us home. 7 4
6 Gospel lesson: John 8:31-36.True freedom comes through faith in God s saving Word. Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered Him, We are Abraham s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, You will be made free? Jesus answered them, Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Confession of Faith: Augsburg Confession, Article III We teach that the Word, that is, the Son of God, did assume the human nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin Mary, so that there are two natures, the divine and the human, inseparably conjoined in one Person, one Christ, true God and true man, who was born of the Virgin Mary, truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, that He might reconcile the Father unto us, and be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for all actual sins of men. Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. GOD IS BOTH/AND I. He is the just God who punishes sin. II. He is the gracious justifier of sinners. He also descended into hell, and truly rose again the third day; afterward He ascended into heaven that He might sit on the right hand of the Father, and forever reign and have dominion over all creatures, and sanctify them that believe in Him, by sending the Holy Ghost into their hearts, to rule, comfort, and quicken them, and to defend them against the devil and the power of sin. The same Christ shall openly come again to judge the quick and the dead, according to the Apostles Creed. Hymn 387:1-5 (red hymnal): Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice Sermon: Romans 3:19-28 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in 5 6
