Celso Singson Bishop McGrath appointed Fr. Celso Singson, J.C.L., as parochial vicar at Holy Family, effective July 1 st. He is youngest in a family of five but celebrated his golden birthday on September 21, Fr. Celso was ordained to the priesthood on November 10, 1990, in the Philippines, and celebrated his silver sacerdotal anniversary in November Throughout his years of ministry, Fr. Celso has previously served as a parochial vicar, rector and administrator, and as a pastor (as well as judicial vicar for the Diocese of Mati, Philippines). He completed a Bachelors degree in Philosophy at the Queens of Apostles College Seminary, Tagum City and a Bachelors in Sacred Theology at the Ecclesiastical Faculty of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila and earned his Licentiate degree in Canon Law at the University of the Holy Cross, Rome. He has been a parochial vicar to Salvador del Mundo Parish of Caraga and San Vicente Ferrer Parish of Lupon, was appointed as Chancellor of the Diocese of Mati and as Judicial Vicar. Later he was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Xavier Parish of Gov. Generoso and San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral. During 2015 he enjoyed a sabbatical year including time at several New Jersey parishes. We congratulate Fr. Celso and welcome him to his new role at Holy Family. Fr. Celso will be warmly greeted by both his brother priests of the Diocese of San Jose (his fraternity ) and our parish (his new community). Let each of us welcome our new priest and enjoy this time of grace, newness, and excitement as he becomes a part of our parish family. Update on Fr. Celso s Status: Fr. Celso had an interview scheduled on Tuesday for his Visa to work in the United States. As of time of printing, we have not heard about the results of the meeting or about his arrival to Holy Family. 2 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As I am writing this note, I am also preparing for my Tijuana mission trip followed by my 3-week vacation that has been long planned with my family. I have been blessed with the care and love of so many parishioners, which in turn gives me more energy to serve our beloved community. While my ministry with the parish and school for the last two years at time seems endless, I am grateful that I was able to get some short breaks in between, especially for this upcoming vacation. I feel very much at ease now by knowing that everything that I could plan for while I am away is in good hands. However, Fr. Celso Singson s (our new parochial vicar) arrival from the Philippines is still uncertain. I was informed by Fr. Celso that he already has an appointment scheduled with the US Embassy in Manila on June 28 th for his visa interview. It is possible by the time that this article is published for the weekend of July 2 nd, he could be here already or he may not be yet. In any event, our parish is already prepared to accommodate Fr. Celso should he not be able to make it by July 1 st as appointed by Bishop McGrath. Please join me in welcoming Fr. Celso to our wonderful community whenever you have a chance to meet him. We know the things that will make us happy, but we don't always do them. Resisting Happiness can inspire you to break through resistance so you can become the best-version-of-yourself and start living with passion and purpose. The spiritual book club will meet for six sessions on Monday evenings starting July 10th (excluding July 31st). Each session will start with an ice breaker at 7pm followed by a short video and book discussion from 7:30-8:30pm. Each session covers six chapters (quick, easy reading) and assumes participants complete the reading assignment prior to the session. Holy Family Young Adults will be having a beach hang out day at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday, July 8th. Come and join us. We will begin with daily Mass at Holy Family at 8:30am, then depart from the church parking lot around 9:10. We'll be providing sandwiches for lunch so please bring drinks for yourself, and chips or salads to share. We'd appreciate if you could post on the page what you will be bringing. You May Help Save a Life Stanford Blood Center and the Knights of Columbus thank our parishioners for another successful blood drive last Sunday. We had 50 donors donate 45 units of blood. While the need is persistent, it is especially acute around a holiday. Thank you for this gift of life. Eucharistic Adoration You re invited to the First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel on Friday, July 7. Exposition begins at the end of the morning Mass, around 8am, and concludes with Benediction at 5pm. Sign up for a 30- minute time of prayer to enable others to come and go during that timeframe. Small Things Count 21-year-old pre-med student Alton Brieske denied being a hero after he saw a car going into the river and he jumped in, broke into the car, pulled a non-breathing elderly man to shore, then gave him CPR. Here s how he described the situation: "That was my calling for the day." It made me think that we may all have a "calling" for each day; we just need to recognize and act on it. For people who don't swim or know CPR, consider the man who was wandering by and heard Alton's cry for a hammer to smash the car window. He just happened to have one with him. A Successful Book Drive We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all the Holy Family school parents and parishioners who went out of their way to donate a gently used or new book for the FIAT book drive this year. We had an outpouring of generosity by many folks. We provided over 2000 books to the following recipients: Catholic Charities to help them with their reading program for Kinder and 1st grade children; Sacred Heart for their library to loan and donate to those in need; Hope Services and the Pearl Public Library for sales to benefit the many programs both provide to those in need. 5 Faith Formation is life long and ongoing for Catholics of any age. Families are the domestic Church, where love for Jesus grows; he grows in the love of spouses, he grows in the lives of children. Holy Family provides opportunities for families to engage in building this foundation together. Faith Formation Enrollment Faith Formation classes are held from 11 AM 12noon on most Sundays during the school year. The first class will meet Sunday, August 13, We are excited to invite you to enroll your child(ren) for Faith Formation (pre-k through 12th grade) Over the last few years, we have been tailoring our programs to best fit the formation needs of your child(ren). We believe that you are an important part of this process. In order to better serve you and your family, we d like to meet with you. Visit the website for more details. Please prayerfully consider what time you and your family can get together with us at Holy Family and sign-up for an appointment on the parish website. Catechists & Assistants Needed If you are interested in being an assistant or teacher, please contact Christina Fenn, our Faith Formation Director at cfenn@dsj.org or (408) Village House is an interfaith shelter of hope and St. Julie s is the current host of this women s shelter. Consider volunteering by signing up online at the Village House website: Holy Family will operate the shelter during November until December 6th. Helping a shift or more at one of the other churches is an opportunity to get to know the women and learn how things work before the shelter moves here. Those other churches include: : St. Julie, Cathedral of Faith, St. Timothy Lutheran. This provides great opportunities for us to gain experience and use your gifts and talents. Many volunteer opportunities are available for individuals or groups such as laundry, meals, intake and overnight, driving, and medical. You can see where they need help on the Village House website. Sign-ups for these sites are opened before each church s sponsorship begins. Continued from last week. Liturgy Link The Mass Our Offering After raising the host to God, we then add a little water to the wine in the chalice. As this is done, the priest or deacon says, By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. This is called the comingling. We might wonder, if we have noticed the water being poured, why is this little amount of water even important? We know, by faith and teaching, that Christ bore us all, by bearing our sins. The water is understood to be the people and the wine is showed to be the Blood, representing Christ s divine nature. When it is mixed together, it becomes one, so that Christ and the assembly of believers are conjoined with him, joining our humanity with his divinity. This is mingled in such a way that it can no longer be separated. Many theologians over the years have addressed this practice, St Justin the Martyr, St. Cyprian, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Alexander I to name a few, and all affirm its importance. Perhaps most telling of its necessity is that the council of Trent went so far as to excommunicate those who denied the need for this mixture. Through this mingling, we become to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Continued next week.
