2 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Let us recount Mary s song the Magnificat in response to God s grace: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy is name! His mercy is from generation to generation On those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength And scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones And raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things Sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, Remembering his mercy, The mercy promised to our fathers, To Abraham and his sons for ever. Luke (1:46-55) We too, as Holy Family community, want to echo these words of gratitude from one generation to another. It is obvious that generations before us did their best to help build our community of faith with many of the establishments, including our useful facilities. We are very grateful to God and to those whose love, thoughtfulness and generosity have enabled us to inherit this great legacy from them. As grateful people, we also want to leave behind our legacy for the next generation as much as we have graciously received from the past. In fact, our parish is our spiritual home. It is not only a community of love and faith, but it is also our larger family. Our love for Christ our Lord is manifested through those we encounter and serve. As much as we all love our biological family, we also love our spiritual home. It is fair to say that who we are as a person has to do much with our family. Likewise, who we are as a Christian Catholic has to do with our faith community our parish. Therefore, out of gratefulness to God and to our spiritual home, if all possible, please prayerfully consider our parish in your will. 4 Boy Scout Wreath Sales Holy Family s Boy Scout Troop is excited to offer parishioners a chance to order Christmas Wreaths and other evergreen products. Please visit the Troop table outside of Mass on October 21 and 22 to order your wreaths. We will have a deliver date available when you order your wreaths. They will be delivered before and after Masses most likely on December 9 and 10. Ministry to the Sick & Homebound Training Series Saturdays, November 11 & 18 8:30am - noon Location: O Connor Hospital Chapel Forest Avenue, San Jose Cost: FREE (a $100 fee is charged for registration that will be returned after both sessions are attended). There is a need in our diocese to minister to those who are sick in hospitals and those who are homebound. This training series is for people who are currently in this ministry and those interested in learning more about it. Participants will explore, share and practice elements of this ministry to enhance their skills and resources. Annual Bocce Ball Tournament Mark your calendar for our School s annual event on November 13th from 5-9pm. 2nd Collection next week Next week is the 5th Sunday of the month which is when we collect for our local St. Vincent de Paul Chapter. All of the money we collect gets distributed to people in our area who are in need. Please be generous. Last Sack Collection of the Year Next weekend (Oct. 29) is our last collection before we pack the Survival Sacks for the Homeless. At this point we REALLY NEED new men s and women s white work-type socks AND new men s and women s underpants (all sizes). We re very short on these items each Survival Sack contains two pairs of each. Other items we need are deodorant, personal sized 1 st aid kits, lip balm, and toilet paper (no small-sized rolls, please). Bring your items to Mass next weekend and give them to FIAT members waiting outside the front of church. Or drop them off at the parish office. Help give the homeless members of our community a warmer, healthier winter. People With Intellectual Disabilities Fund Drive Holy Family s annual fund raising drive to benefit People With Intel- lectual Disabilities will accept your donations after all masses on the weekend of October 21 and % of all donations are used right here in our own community through Hope Services and Special Olympics of Santa Clara County. Your donations in any form are welcomed and greatly needed. 5 Faith Formation Enrollment Faith Formation classes are held from 11 am Noon on most Sundays during the school year. We are excited to invite you to enroll your child(ren) for Faith Formation (pre-k through 12th grade) Over the last few years we have been tailoring our programs to best fit the formation needs of children. This week we take a momentary break from our discussion on the Mass and focus instead on statues and images within the Church. As you probably noticed, Mary is in a prominent space in our sanctuary as we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of her appearing to the children at Fatima. Some might say that the Church Fathers at Vatican II put a prohibition on statues and images in the church. However, while the Church Fathers did indeed stress a need for the statues and images to be moderated carefully, they did recognize their place in our sacred spaces. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, states, "Thus, in sacred buildings images of the Lord, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saints, in accordance with most ancient tradition of the Church, should be displayed for veneration by the faithful and should be so arranged so as to lead the faithful toward the mysteries of faith celebrated there." This month, as you see Mary in the church, please take time to ask her to pray for you to her Son, and intercede on your behalf so that you might merit entrance into heaven.
