This is the patronal feast day of the United States and is a Holy Day of Obligation. All are welcome to celebrate with us at Masses at 7:30am or 7:30pm. GIFTS TO CELEBRATE ADVENT! COME ONE COME ALL!! You are invited to join us for the annual free drawing of gifts to celebrate Advent. The drawing will take place on December 3rd, after the 8:00 and 9:30am Mass, during the Parish breakfast served by the Knights of Columbus. As each person enters the Community Center they will receive a free ticket for the drawing. We look forward to seeing you for breakfast and celebrating this Advent season! Advent Morning of Reflection Join us in just TWO WEEKS for the Advent morning of reflection with Fr. Kevin Joyce on Saturday, December 16, 10 am 12:00 pm in the parish church. Bring your Bibles! Why have millions of people made pilgrimages to Lourdes over the past 150 years, and tens of millions of people made pilgrimages to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe since 1531? The answer is the power and presence of the Virgin Mary in God s plan for the world. During this Advent Parish Mission, Fr. Kevin Joyce will help us understand Mary s role in the Bible, in Christian history, and in our own spiritual journeys. He will also address common objections to the intercession of saints and how the Catholic practice of asking saints to pray for us is solid biblical teaching. Fr. Kevin completed his doctorate in Spirituality at the Catholic University of America in 1991 and later served as pastor of St. Maria Goretti Parish in San Jose and St. Lucy Parish in Campbell. He now serves at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in San Jose. For more info contact Christina: cfenn@dsj.org Village House Our guests will be with us just three more days. Please see the Village House sign-up page: On December 6, our guests will be moving to Temple Emmanuel and would certainly welcome extra volunteers. We will be having a Farewell for them on December 3 at the 6pm Mass. Pictures of the Dearly Departed If you had placed a picture on the Dia de Los Muertos altar and didn t retrieve it before it was disassembled, you can claim your picture in the parish office during regular office hours.
2 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer. 1 Tim 4:4-5 Indeed, every human life is sacred and should be treated with dignity. Here at Holy Family Community we are privileged to be God s instruments of love to nurture such sacredness. To that end, we have been working with Village House (an interfaith shelter of hope) in providing a safe shelter for up to 13 women identified by the Santa Clara County Department of Social Services since November 1 st. December 6 th will be the last day for these women before they move on to their next sheltering place. Thanks be to God for giving us the opportunity and granting us all the graces to make our hosting possible and welcoming to our guests. It is soon coming to a fruitful end. I am deeply appreciative to the many volunteers who have made this event so gracious. It would be impossible to name every volunteer who helped us along the way for there are hundreds of them. However, I would like to recognize the following leaders: Shelter Director: Christ Schmitz Director Guest Services: Libby Echavarria Directors of Clothing/Laundry: Carol Pascoe & Linda Vlcek Directors of Meals: Patty Trillo & Mimi Bini Directors of Personal Needs: FIAT & Jackie O Donnell Director of Security: Marv Lewis Director of Maintenance: Phil Dewstone Director of Transportation: Harry Coulter Director of Volunteer Recruitment and Scheduling: Jerry Lane Evening Intake Directors: Cristina Ruiz & Erica Davied Overnight Site Directors: Bob Fields, Scott Beaumont & John Hessler Medical Directors: Donna Holt, Andrew Lane & Belle Bacon To mark an end of our sheltering ministry to our guests this year, we will celebrate a farewell Mass for them this Sunday, December 3rd at 6:00pm. I invite you all to come and join in giving thanks to God as we wish them well in their next journey. May our almighty and loving God continue to watch over our guests and our community with God s peace and protection. God bless, Fr. Andrew Vu Nguyen Holy Family School News We began accepting applications for the school year for students in Preschool to 8th grade in November. 4 Small Things Count There s a person outside your grocery store asking for donations to a charity you never heard about. But it SOUNDS so worthy, and the person LOOKS so honest. Still, you wonder. Or there s a homeless person who looks so hungry, but are they for real? Then there s the kid at your door collecting for a charity his group is supporting as a school project or selling overpriced candy (that you won t/ shouldn t eat) so their team can go to national competition. Your heart goes out to all of these people, but you don t want to be scammed. How can you be sure your money goes to support people that really DO need it? Simple. Every time your heart speaks, ask your mind how much you would give if you were certain that this was a valid cause. Put that amount in a jar. After you ve done this awhile, give that money to a charity you re comfortable with. No amount is too small, so make your contribution often. That way, you satisfy your heart and mind, and you make someone s life a little easier. Call Jackie O Donnell at or write c/o Holy Family. A Little Thanksgiving Feast We are so thankful for our Holy Family community, our school, our staff and most of all our students. Our Preschoolers had a Thanksgiving feast celebration. They made their own feast which included pumpkin pie (preschooler version), fruit kabob, cranberry muffins, a customized place mat and napkin ring. They enjoyed their meal together and shared how much they enjoyed their time creating the meal when Mrs. Hannon came in for a visit. Click on the Faith Formation tab and then the link for Children s Faith Formation. Please prayerfully consider what time you and your family can get together with us at Holy Family. Sign-up for an appointment on the parish website. Continued from last week. Liturgy Link The Mass Our Offering Last week we spoke about the communion rite and receiving communion, this week we consider how we receive Holy Communion as part of fully participating in the Mass. Our disposition to the Eucharist is of utmost importance. Some of us may come to Mass and unable to receive the Blessed Sacrament, perhaps we have not maintained the fast, may need to go to confession, or are baptized but not yet received first Eucharist but we still come to the Mass and participate fully. In this case, we approach the Sacrament with reverence, bowing before it, with arms crossed over our chest so the priest or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion knows to offer a blessing. We bow again at the cup, but do not receive a second blessing. For those of us able to receive the Blessed Sacrament, we approach, bowing slightly to show our reverence, and then open our hands to receive the host, replying Amen! when it is placed in our hand, or holding out our hands to receive the chalice, replying Amen!. This AMEN! means that we are agreeing with what we are receiving as being the Body of Christ, truly Jesus made present to us. In addition, that Amen is YES! to our being part of the body of Christ, and choosing to live together in community.
