On May 13 th, we will gather to process around Holy Family, while praying together the Rosary and singing. Our procession will begin at 5:00pm and once done we will assemble for the 5:30pm Mass. Our Lady appeared every month on the 13 th to the 3 children, each time speaking with Lucia, from May through October. In October she gave a miracle to all those who gathered with the 3 children. Though they could not see Our Lady, as the children did, all those gathered saw the miracle of the sun. On the last visitation, she identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary, and again asked that the Rosary be recited daily for peace in the world. Our Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree members will lead the procession carrying a statue of Our Lady. Father Andrew will lead us in the recitation of the Rosary, meditating on the Joyful Mysteries. We will sing the Ave Maria, and, at the end, we will join in song to our Lady, singing Salve Regina Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae: Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve. O clemens: O pia: O dulcis Virgo Maria. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Village House Needs Help Village House is a shelter for homeless women. St. Paul s Methodist church is hosting it in this month but they have a very small con- gregation and need much help. Please consider volunteering at St Paul s for the week of May 17th - 24th. You could help out more if you like but Holy Family and St Martin of Tours are sharing responsibility for that week. Here is a link to an online signup for St Paul s There is even more info on the Village House website This would be good practice for all of us as Holy Family will be hosting the shelter in November.
2 Plenary Indulgence Available for Centennial of Our Lady of Fatima Apparitions In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, a one-year Jubilee began on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2016, at the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima in Portugal and will continue until November 26, Pope Francis will make a pilgrimage to the shrine next week, May 12-13, on the anniversary of the first apparition to Lucía Santos and Blesseds Jacinta and Francisco Marto at the Cova da Iria. The Apostolic Penitentiary has granted a plenary indulgence for the centennial anniversary of the Fatima apparitions. An English translation of the decree was released by the basilica shrine: The plenary indulgence of the jubilee is granted: a) to the faithful who visit the Shrine of Fatima in pilgrimage and devotedly participate in a celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary, pray the Our Father, recite the Symbol of Faith (Creed) and invoke Our Lady of Fatima; b) to the pious faithful who visit with devotion an image of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly displayed for public veneration in any temple, oratory or adequate place, during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions (the 13th of each month, from May to October 2017), and devotedly participate there in any celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary, pray the Our Father, recite the Symbol of Faith (Creed) and invoke Our Lady of Fatima; c) to the faithful who, due to their age, disease or other serious reason, are impeded of moving, if, repentant of all their sins and having the firm intention of performing, as soon as possible, the three conditions mentioned below, in front of a small image of Our Lady of Fatima, spiritually unite in the days of the apparitions to the Jubilee celebrations, offering with trust to God all-merciful through Mary their prayers and pains, or the sacrifices of their own lives. To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful, truly penitent and animated with charity, must ritually fulfill the following conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. More important than the actual apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary are her profound messages for the People of God. At Fatima, Our Lady asked men and women of good will to pray for peace, especially through the Rosary and by greater devotion to her Immaculate Heart. Celebrating her appearances to three humble shepherd children, the Church continues its fervent prayers for a just and lasting peace throughout the world: O God, who chose the Mother of your Son to be our Mother also, grant us that, persevering in penance and prayer for the salvation of the world, we may further more effectively each day the reign of Christ. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Those wishing to learn more about the basilica shrine, especially if making a pilgrimage, should visit their website at In addition, the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima is in the middle of a two- year tour of parishes throughout the United States, sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima U.S.A. Your gift to Catholic Charities will be a channel of hope for thousands of people through programs and services here in Santa Clara County. Please welcome our appeal speakers and please give generously! For more information contact Linda at Small Things Count This is International Compost Awareness Week (May 7 13). Doesn t sound exciting? Sounds like way too much work? Actually, it s a fun, easy family activity. Find at least a 3 x 3 sunny spot in your yard and start collecting coarse materials like pieces of bark, twigs, and prunings. These make a base that will allow for air-flow and access by those wriggly workers, worms (if you build it, they will come or add your own). On top of that, put 2-4 of kitchen waste, animal manure, grass clipping (mix with dry leaves to avoid compacting), and other organic matter. Lightly water the pile and build a similar pile on top of it. Another light spray, then continue. Every other week, add a handful of bone meal or a shovelful of manure and turn the pile with a pitchfork. Soon you have a very rich substance to feed the flowers and vegetables. Meanwhile, if the kids have learned a little something, who ll complain? Call Jackie O Donnell at or write c/o Holy Family. Holy Family School learns agriculture just down the street Ethel Cottle had a vision knowing that future young people in Santa Clara Valley would need to learn how agriculture shaped our region. With that knowledge, Ethel planned to preserve the land where the familiar South San Jose landmark, The House, at Snell and Branham, would be a place to bring together new generations to enjoy the landscape and explore our history. Today, Martial Cottle Park serves as an area for learning the agricultural heritage and the tradition of farming in the Santa Clara Valley. Our 2nd Grade class had the honor of being one of the first groups to take part of their educational program. Our 2nd graders were so excited to participate in the hands on activities, which included milking a cow! Hearing that children in the 1900 s would be expected to milk cows as one of their chores early in the morning brought a level of appreciation to just being able to attend school. Besides milking cows, the students were able to try their hand at steer roping. Students were exposed to the many ways an eight year old would help on the farm, certainly chores they would not be expected to do today. The 2nd graders learned about planting seeds, but also the ways children had fun. Many outdoor games were played including kendama. First was work, then play, a value shared then and now. As the final part of this trip, students participated in a map activity showing them the changes around the ranch from 1899 until 1960 s. The changes through time were quite eye opening. The 2nd graders got a small glimpse of agricultural life, more they truly gained a greater appreciation for the important history in their own backyard. Liturgy Link The Mass The Mass has 4 parts; the introductory rites, the liturgy of the Word, the liturgy of the Eucharist and the concluding rites. I wrote a few weeks ago about the liturgy of the Word so now let s look at the first part, the introductory rites. Its parts are: Procession Greeting Penitential Act Collect The procession begins, not when the altar server with the cross enters the church proper, but rather when we begin our preparations at home. For some of us, that begins the night before, when we read the following day s scripture. For others, it begins when we rouse ourselves from our slumber and quietly being the preparations of the morning. For most of us with children, it begins in a very chaotic way of waking up each member of the household, ensuring all have been fed, helping them choose appropriate clothing, and then making a mad dash out the door to arrive in time. If I look back to when my children were young, I d say that we seldom got out the door without tears. For all those struggles, I was always so thankful when I arrived in my pew and settled in, knowing I d be given so much peace through this beautiful prayer. The procession that begins with the cross and ends with Father, is now symbolic. It represents all of our processing to the Mass, and reminds us that before our churches grew so large all the faithful would gather behind the cross and make our way to the Mass together in procession. We all stand during this time maintaining the same posture. Continued next week with the greeting Kathy Bohac Coordinator of Liturgy Catholic Professionals Thursday, May 11 at Three Flames Restaurant Banquet Room, 1547 Meridian Avenue, San Jose. 7am Mass, 7:35am Speaker. Come hear Nancy Kehoe, RSCJ, PhD and author of Wrestling with Our Inner Angels; Faith, Mental Illness and the Journey to Wholeness, speak about Robbed by Mental Illness: Discarded by Society, Who will be my Good Samaritan?
