COLLECTIONS Thank you for your support! September 10, 2017 $ 6, $ $ 3, $ 3, Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: "Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?" Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus' parable in today's Gospel reminds us of God's compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. III II II I WEDDING BANNS Raul Vincente Rodriguez + Sarah Marie Hilkert Jonathan Matthew Boal + Maggie Michelle Fuller Mark Charles Weymer + Jaclyn Marie Guidetti Michael Thomas McGing + Kelly Marie Renzi FAMILY PERSPECTIVES When we forgive someone, we unilaterally choose not to hold a grudge against him or her. When we reconcile, we move to a new plateau in our relationship where the needs of all parties are heard and respected. In families we can sometimes forgive someone without even speaking. Reconciling is more difficult, for we must involve the one who has hurt us and rebuild trust. It is not always safe or possible to reconcile, but forgiveness is an essential ingredient of the Kingdom of Heaven. A person is a person no matter how small." Dr. Seuss

4 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, September 17, 2017 A WORD FROM THE DEACON As a deacon, I learned fairly early on that one can never say everything that could or even should be said in a homily. I try to stimulate a thought or two that hopefully can be connected to other homilies that you have heard over the years, bible study reflections, or your own meditating upon the activity of God in your life. I am grateful, though, for the opportunity to share a thought or two in this way. The readings from Sirach and the gospel of Matthew this weekend speak to us of the importance of forgiveness. Earlier in Matthew s gospel Jesus gives us the difficult command to... love your enemies. Forgiveness is but one expression of this command. Most of us, sadly, go through life with at least a few people we may feel are our enemies. Or, more broadly, people seem to hate us. There are people whom we ve offended and to whom we ve apologized, but who refuse to accept our apologies. There are people at work who we ve angered, who are jealous of us or who have set themselves against us. There are people in our families who hold a grudge against us for some mysterious reason that we can never comprehend. And there are people who seem to dislike us or wish us ill for no good reason. It s a sad part of human life. How are we to love these people? The word the gospel uses to describe this kind of love is agape. Agape is a sort of unconquerable benevolence or invincible goodwill. Jesus is asking us to agape people no matter how they treat us, no matter how they insult us. No matter what their actions, we never allow bitterness against them to invade our hearts, but will treat them with goodwill. It doesn t mean that we have to love our enemies the same way that we speak about falling in love with someone or the way we love our family members. It simply means we must open our hearts to them. All of this is easier said than done. In my life, I have found this probably the most difficult thing to do as a Christian. Much could be said about this. One thing I have learned is to pray for them. In my experience, it s easier to agape someone you dislike (or who dislikes you) when you pray for them. Because when you pray for them, God often opens your heart to seeing people the way that God sees them, rather than the way you see them, even people who may be filled with anger toward you.... Deacon Bob TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 17, 2017 Forgive your neighbor's injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. -- Sirach 28:2 SVDP MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY Tuesdays September 19 th, 26 th! 3 to 4:30 Service hours galore! 5 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Five Sunday, September 17, 2017 CATECHETICAL SUNDAY At our Masses this weekend, we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The theme this year is Living as Missionary Disciples. We honor the dedicated teachers in our Parish Day School, our Parish School of Religion (PSR), the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), and our other faith formation and spiritual renewal opportunities for youth and adults. They are truly conscientious and caring missionary disciples. We recognize, celebrate, and want to support all parents, grandparents, and other family members who exemplify and pass on our rich Catholic Christian faith in their homes. You are very significant catechists, missionary disciples and your home is the first missionary formation center. Fr. Norm The warmth of Summer is fading but we can still feel the warmth of Giving! Our group is concentrating on providing cereal/oatmeal, fruit, chunky soup, and stew/chili for the fall. As always, you may bring in ANY food from your pantry!
