Welcome to the St. Vincent de Paul Parish Community SYLVIA GLENN WATTERS, daughter of Joseph and Angela Watters, who was baptized Sunday, December 11, SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent's scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today's Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph's courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God's holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

3 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Three Sunday, December 18, 2016 A WORD FROM THE DEACON... Next weekend, of course, is Christmas. It seems to me that Christmas is all about hope. Very often when I preside at the baptism of an infant I like to remind those in attendance that the birth of every child is a sure reminder that God has not given up on us. Meditating upon the infant Jesus in the stable is the supreme reminder that, indeed, God has not and will not give up on the world. Hope empowers us to live differently because a Christian understanding of hope is rooted in the unshakable conviction that God loves us and wants our good. Christian hope reaches for an unsurpassable good we already, if imperfectly, possess: the very life, love, goodness and joy of God. For Christians, hope is both a gift and a calling. I read a useful essay about hope recently and, among other things, the author urges us to be MINISTERS OF HOPE. We minister hope when we help people find healing for hurts that will not go away and for memories that still haunt them. We minister hope when we forgive and allow ourselves to be forgiven. And we especially minister hope when we affirm the dignity of every person who passes in and out of our lives, celebrate their existence, and let them know how poorer the world would be without them. Pope Benedict once wrote: It is never too late to touch the heart of another, nor is it ever in vain. Good words for us this Christmas... On another matter... our diocese is now accepting expressions of interest from men who may be interested in serving the church as a Permanent Deacon. The deadline for inquiries to our Diocesan Diaconate Aspirancy Program, which will begin in September 2017, is 15 January All those men who are interested in applying to the 2017 program are asked to please write to Deacon David S. Kushner, Director of Diaconate Formation, Center for Pastoral Leadership, Euclid Avenue, Wickliffe, Ohio by the 15 January 2017 deadline or telephone the Diaconate Formation Office at Additionally, I would be happy to talk with anyone who may be interested in this vocation. Finally, thank you so much for the very warm welcome that you have offered to me and my wife, Martie, since I began serving here last summer. My ministry continues to evolve in a very happy and positive way. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.... RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS Thank you for supporting senior religious. A sister from Indiana writes, Because of your kindness, our elderly sisters will have the comfort, security, and joy of living out their remaining years here in their home. You truly honor them and their many years of service by y o u r g e n e r o s i t y. Religious across the United States offer sincere thanks for your generosity to last week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Thank you for our parish donations totaling $2,753. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Without the angel s intervention, a confused and hurt Joseph was planning to quietly divorce Mary. Those people who come into our lives at times of confusion and help us find our way are truly angels to us. Like Joseph, we need to listen to them; frequently those angels are in our own homes. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Knight at the Races Mark your calendar! The St. Vincent Knights of Columbus will be holding a Knight at the Races on Saturday, January 14, In support of this effort please consider an ad for the Knight at the Races racing form. The ads are $25, $50, and $100 respectively; all you need to do is to supply a business card or brochure and it can be placed into the racing form. A $50 ad will offer the extra publicity that comes with being a race sponsor; a $100 ad will fill a whole page. Considering the inexpensive cost of these ads and the benefit to our parish, the good will to your company is not such a bad value. For more information call Fred Neugebauer at or Brian Walsh at , or send your information to the rectory marked c/o Knights of Columbus by January 7, ST. 6 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Six Sunday, December 18, 2016 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, the first Christmas carols are heard in the home, but usually not yet in church. What is a "carol" anyway? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a festival such as a harvest. By the thirteenth century or so, carols were associated with household celebrations. "Carol" comes from the Old French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren't for church, since the language of liturgy was Latin and the carols were in the common language. Their characteristic sound comes from medieval chord patterns, and they often have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the Reformation, carols didn't make it into church services until the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. Anglicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn't admit carols to liturgy either, but we didn't make laws against them. We are told that the beloved carol "Silent Night" comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, had written the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the church's organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in The people were shocked to hear a guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the "Silent Night Memorial Chapel" at the site. Today the carol is in print in some three hundred languages. How wonderful that the pipe organ broke on that night! --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
