Baptism Preparation classes can be completed at either St. Hilary (Beth Rado, ) or at St. Sebastian (Cathy Sivec ext. 134 or sivecc@stsebastian.org). Call either parish for times and registration details. Proof of attendance should be presented to St. Vincent Church prior to the baptism. Marriages: Couples intending to marry should call at the rectory at least SIX MONTHS prior to the marriage. It is required to have copies of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation records, if these Sacraments are not received at St. Vincent. Wedding times on Saturday are at 2:00 PM. Parish School of Religion (PSR) Pre-School - 8th: Classes are September through May. Classes are held in St. Vincent Grade School on Sundays from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (Convert Classes): Classes begin in September: For information, call Hospital/Sick/Shut-in Visitation : Please notify the Rectory when a parishioner is hospitalized, shut-in or ill. A Philadelphia clergyman named Phillips Brooks penned these popular words back in the mid-1800s, but the prophet Micah could have used them first. Micah knew that from small packages great treasures come. In today's first reading, he knew that from tiny Bethlehem would come the Lord. The writer in Hebrews explains that Christ came to us to do the will of God by establishing a new order and by becoming our perfect sacrifice. And Luke tells us that Elizabeth and John, the infant in her womb, understand that great and wondrous things are at hand with the coming of the Lord. This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Soon we celebrate anew the fruit of Mary's womb. As we are told in Hebrews, Jesus' new order is being established even today. DISCIPLES FOR THE DYING The schedule is as follows: There will not be a First Friday Mass in January at St. Vincent as it is New Year s Day; Mass on February 5 at St. Sebastian at 5:00 p.m. All are Welcome. CYO BASKETBALL SEASON IS UNDERWAY! CONCESSION STAND Did you know that our CYO Booster Club offers concessions at our home basketball games? Outside of the gymnasium doors, you will find an assortment of drinks, candy, hot dogs and more! The concession sales help defray the cost for the families who wish to participate in CYO sports! Be sure to stop by and grab a bite to eat it s game time! KNIGHT AT THE RACES Mark your calendar! The St. Vincent Knights of Columbus will be holding a Knight at the Races on Saturday, January 16, In support of this effort please consider an ad for the Knight at the Races racing form. The ads are $25.00, $50.00, and $ respectively; all you need to do is to supply a business card or brochure and it can be placed into the racing form. A $50.00 ad will offer the extra publicity that comes with being a race sponsor; a $ ad will fill a whole page. Considering the inexpensive cost of these ads and the benefit to our parish, the good will to your company is not such a bad value. 6 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Six December 20, 2015 SVDP Parish School s 6th Grade Class has embraced the project of creating Little Free Libraries around West Akron! How does a group of learners accomplish a task like this? Learning about literacy, and about how they can spread literacy in our world. Researching the prospective Little Library sites: geographically and demographically; assessing need and the feasibility of maintaining a site. Presenting their ideas to owners of prospective sites: SVDP, St. Vincent St. Mary High School, Harvest Home, and the City of Akron, to name a few. Collaborating with fellow learners, teachers, parents, grandparents, and friends of SVDP: sharing ideas and materials to create the best outcome. Designing and constructing the actual Little Libraries using math science and engineering, and artistic skills. Receiving a grant though the First Energy STEM program which will help to cover costs associated with the project. Additionally, funds raised from our recent Book Fair will help to purchase books for the libraries. Our learners and staff believe in the mission of Little Free Library.org. To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. There are over 32,000 Little Free Library book exchanges around the world, bringing curbside literacy home and sharing over 1 million books annually. HANDEL S MESSIAH PART I St. Sebastian Parish presents Handel s Messiah Part I Music and Art Meet Scripture on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Sebastian Church. It will feature the Parish Choir and members of the Singers Companye, orchestra soloists and art projections. Bring your messiah score and join in on the choruses. A freewill offering will be taken.
