4 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, August 26, 2018 A WORD FROM THE DEACON This is the last week, for a while of reading from the Gospel of John, Chapter 6. Next week we return to Mark s gospel. This week, though, we have one of the most touching scenes in all of the gospels. Peter s decision was based on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. There were many things he did not understand; he was just as bewildered and puzzled as anyone else. But there was something about Jesus for which he would willingly die. In the last analysis, Christianity is not a philosophy which we accept, nor a theory to which we give allegiance. It is a personal decision and response to Jesus Christ. It is the loyalty and love which we give because our hearts will not allow us to do anything else. If Jesus remains for us mostly a figure we read about in a book or an object of study - he is external to us; but when like Peter we make the decision to allow Jesus to enter into our hearts, we can feed upon the life, and the strength and the dynamic vitality that he gives to us. Jesus has said to us that we must eat his body and drink his blood. It is as if he is saying: You must stop thinking of me as a subject for some sort of theological debate; you must take me into you, and you must come into me; you must take my life into the very core of your hearts and then you will have eternal life. This is what Jesus meant when he spoke about us abiding in him and himself abiding in us.... Deacon Bob PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION - PSR Did you know P.S.R. serves Pre-K 8 th grade? If your child is not attending a Catholic school, please take advantage of this wonderful program. P.S.R. Registration will be Sunday, September 9 th in the P.S.R. Office in the school between 9:30-11 am. Please plan on registering. Extra registration forms and information are available in the back of the church. Classrooms will be open for you to see. If this presents a problem, please contact Ellen Dies at or X 101. REMEMBER ME Adoration JESUS ASKS: WILL YOU SPEND TIME WITH ME? SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 1 9 am - Noon WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT? Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Perhaps you ve been thinking of becoming a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish or perhaps you are just curious about what Catholics believe. Please join us for coffee and a treat on Sunday, September 9th at 9:45 A.M. in the Family Center, or Monday, September 10th at 7 P.M. in the rectory for a 45-minute question-andanswer session. All are welcome. If you d like more information, Ellen at ellen@stvincentchurch.com. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Today s second reading from Ephesians makes today nudge Sunday. Husbands nudge their wives when they hear wives should be subordinate to their husbands. Wives return the nudge at the words husbands love your wives as Christ loves the Church. The key to this reading is the first line: be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. When love is mutual and generously shared between husband and wife marriage goes to a whole new wonderful level! Every day, more than 3,000 children are killed in our country through abortion, and most of their bodies are discarded with medical waste. Please join Right to Life of Northeast Ohio on Saturday, September 8th as we observe the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children at 1 pm at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron. Participants include Fr. Norm Douglas, St. Vincent s Akron, Rev. Daren Brake from The House of the Lord, and Ohio representative Kristina Roegner. Visit our website at for more information and a printable map.

Be your Best Be IRISH! In the ancient world, "household" was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn't think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the "households" of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many "strangers" every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are "next door" to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a "household" that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
