3 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Three Sunday, May 21, 2017 A WORD FROM THE DEACON... Several weeks ago I had the great pleasure of attending the ordination of four men as Permanent Deacons for service to the Diocese of Cleveland. I was ordained 15 years ago and each of the ordinations I have attended since then have, in some way, made present - in a special way - something of my own. Reflecting back on the event of my own ordination and participating in some small way in the formation of others as deacons since then is always a profound and humbling experience. This year I was especially attentive to the significant changes that ordination occasions in one s life. Bishop Gries was gracious in acknowledging the role of men s wives and children in their formation and their ministry that follows. No one s life in the family is quite the same following ordination. In recognition of this, Bishop Pilla - right before the Rite began - asked each of the wives whether the church had permission to ordain their husbands. Throughout formation, he was very clear with all of us that our first responsibility was to our wives and families, our second to our workplaces, and our third to the Church (I have since retired from my employment, so the Church has now moved up to second!). All of us try very hard to maintain this necessary balance. I am grateful to Martie and our children for the encouragement and prayerful support that they provide me in my ministry. I am grateful to you for welcoming me to St. Vincent s and for your friendship and encouragement. I have been blessed to provide diaconal ministry to the good people of Queen of Heaven, Nativity of the Lord Jesus, St. Paul, and now you. Please let me know if there is something I can do for you.... DEACON BOB CATHOLIC CEMETERIES ASSOCIATION Join us for Mass to honor those who served, pray for peace, and join with the body of Christ. Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Cemetery, 100 East Waterloo Road, Akron, Monday, May 29, 2017, at 10 a.m. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Jesus reminds Christian families, If you love me, you will keep my commandments. We are to remind and exhort family members to do this, but always with gentleness and reverence. No matter what the problems, pray for the Holy Spirit s guidance and the way will be revealed to you. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Do you know someone suffering an illness? Experiencing a loss in his/her life? Going through a stressful time? The St. Vincent Prayer Shawl Ministry team now has prayer shawls available to any and all who would like one for a family member, friend, or acquaintance in need. The shawls are made in prayer and then blessed. They serve as a tangible sign of God s love and care. The shawls come in all sizes and colors. If you would like to give someone a shawl, please call the rectory to arrange a time to select a shawl for someone you know. Recipients of the shawls may be parishioners or non-parishioners. CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART DAY TRIP Saturday, June 3, :15AM 4:45PM COST: $3 All are invited to join us on a day trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art on June 3. We will be leaving St. Vincent s Church on the church van at 9:15 a.m. and returning around 4:45, just in time for the 5 p.m. Mass! We will have a docent lead tour of the Opulent Fashion of the Church exhibition in the morning, and the rest of the day is yours to explore! Please remember to bring money for lunch. Please contact Samantha Cornell ( or molodylo@hotmail.com) if you would like to attend. Deadline to register is May 26.

4 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, May 21, 2017 FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. NORM CONGRATULATIONS, EIGHTH GRADERS! Congratulations to all the eighth-graders graduating from our school this Thursday evening. Several of them have been at the school for 10 years since entering preschool. We are blessed to have a Catholic Christian, caring, vital, and competent school in which all the children have an opportunity to thrive intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Kudos to the faculty and staff who give of themselves completely and make such a positive difference. Last weekend our Parish School of Religion (PSR) completed their school year by participating in the 5 PM parish Mass. The faculty and staff of PSR are dedicated volunteers who give from their hearts much time and effort to strengthen the faith of these youth. The care and formation of our young people is one of the most significant ministries we do as a total parish. We pray for all their families who are the first Christian community in which these children come to know a God of love who wants to be at the heart of family life. ******************************************** PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL Following the Parish Pastoral Council Information Night held this past Monday evening, all those who attended were asked to reflect and pray on the information they received regarding the role of the Council and the various commissions being developed. They were asked to prayerfully discern whether or not they feel called to the ministry of service and leadership in any of these ways. This Monday, May 22, a discernment night will be held. All those who feel called will return. These individuals will be asked to address several questions regarding their gifts and their thoughts about the life and future of the parish. This will be done in the context of prayer and reflection. A discernment core group will come together in prayer later this week to determine who will be the members of our newly formed Parish Pastoral Council and who will be involved in the formation of our commissions which are Worship and Spiritual Life, Religious Education, Evangelization, Faith at Work, Social Service and Justice, Stewardship, and Communications. THE SERRA CLUB ALTAR SERVERS AWARDS Six 8 th grade Altar Servers of St. Vincent de Paul Parish will be presented with Altar Server Awards by The Serra Club of Akron at the 11 a.m. Mass today. The Serra Club appreciates the assistance of Father Douglas and parish staff in making this presentation a special event. Serra is an international organization of Catholic lay persons whose mission is the support and promotion of religious vocations, and The Serra Club of Akron is one of six clubs in the Diocese of Cleveland. Those altar servers being honored are Emily Bame, Jackson Deitrick, Simon Hamad, Griffin Morgan, Matthew O Connor, and Kouta Tabata. PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today's Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ST. ANTHONY PADUA St. Anthony Padua in Akron invites you to visit Our Lady of Fatima statue on the 13th of any month from May to October. Please visit for full information.

5 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Five Sunday, May 21, 2017 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This weekend, May 20-21, we are participating in a follow-up In-Pew Appeal for Catholic Charities, which will benefit the Hungry and Homeless throughout our Diocese. During this weekend, parishioners will have the opportunity to designate their gifts to support a critical need in the North Hill area of Akron: Blessed Trinity Food Pantry. This pantry provides monthly food supplements and weekly hot meals to families in need. All of the money raised from next weekend s Appeal will provide for fundamental needs, such as food, hot meals, shower facilities, and clothing, as well as future needs through training and case management programs. DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT! All new, increased, and additional gifts made in the In-Pew envelopes available next weekend or donated online at will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000. All proceeds from this Appeal will be invested in services for the Hungry and Homeless, by providing for the basic needs and new beginnings for those in our Diocese who are most vulnerable. Please give as generously as possible. From Matthew s Gospel: Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for the least among us, you did it for me. FUN FACTS! Without exception Recycling is the top action society can do to improve the environment, economy, sustainable manufacturing, and to prevent waste from going to the oceans! Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Thank you Parishioners! For March our 6,020 lbs. of recycled paper saved: Trees Pounds of CO Cubic Yards of Landfill Space 21,070 Gallons of Water 12,341 Kilowatts of Electricity 3.01 Homes Heated for 5 months Pounds of Air Pollutants The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you're visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the "when in Rome" rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a "metasis," toward the altar--bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ's presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar's significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! -Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
