Curriculum Materials for Kindergarten 5 th Grades CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT: ROAD TO GLORY This month has a sports theme, but with a twist. Since the Host isn t very good at any one sport, he s decided to make up his own brand-new combination sport, so he can play the game with honor and be on the Road to Glory. The sport itself will depend on whatever equipment you can find, so plan to decorate using a random arrangement of assorted sports equipment (the more random and the more you have, the better). BEFORE KIDS LEAVE THE 5TH GRADE, WE WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND 3 BASIC TRUTHS: WISDOM I need to make the wise choice. FAITH I can trust God no matter what. FRIENDSHIP I should treat others the way I want to be treated. 2 STATEMENT OF FAITH ABOUT GOD God is the one and only true God, yet He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing, or idea compares to God. ABOUT THE BIBLE God reveals Himself to us through the Bible, and it is 00% accurate, reliable, and authoritative. ABOUT PEOPLE People are made in God s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us. ABOUT SALVATION That s why Jesus God s Son came and lived on this earth, died, and rose again. God offers His free gift of salvation to all who believe in Jesus and accept Him as Savior the only way to be forgiven and reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts this gift is adopted as a son or daughter into God s family and will live with Him forever in heaven. Scripture marked NIV is taken from the Holy Bible, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION. SFX music or sound effects to play as part of the large group experience SMALL GROUP LEADER One consistent leader for the same 8-0 children all year We suggest you start and end in small group so kids connect relationally with one leader and other similar-aged peers. If you have multiple small groups meeting in one room, try using circle area rugs to give each group their own spot. Offer as many of the activities as your time, space, and resources allow.

October Week 203 K 5 Compact FOR LEADERS ONLY GOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN AND GOD S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD S BIG STORY All of God s creation is important to Him. Jesus told us that God remembers each sparrow, even though there are thousands (Luke 2:6-7). But Jesus said that people are even more valuable to God. In fact, God counts every hair on our heads! God shows us how important we are to Him when He pursues a relationship with us. And He started in the very beginning when He sought out Adam and Eve in the Garden. God shows us how much He values us because He loves us. Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. Like God s honor is fueled by His love for us, we show honor back to God because we love Him. And we follow God s example when we show honor to others. Showing honor demonstrates that we see others as God sees them. Every person we meet has value to God and deserves our honor. An inability to show honor to others is often a symptom of a self-centered attitude. Too often, we see ourselves as more valuable than someone else. We are tempted to try to honor ourselves rather than honor others. But when we remember that Jesus came to serve and not to be served, we recognize that our place is to show others how valuable they are. This month, let s think about how: () Giving honor to those that are different than us is not always easy. God showed honor towards us. As we become more like Him, we will begin showing honor to everyone. (2) The Bible challenges us to respond to others with honor even when it costs us something. (3) Honoring others shows them that we see them as God sees them. This week, we re discovering: In this week s Bible story, David didn t seem like someone who would be the next king, and he sure didn t look like he could defeat a giant ( Samuel 6:-3; 7:-58). But God could see David s heart and He knew David was worthy of honor. Samuel and all the Israelite army soon learned that people might be able to do far more than we expect. Our Bottom Line is: honor others by giving them a chance. The kid who seems like an underdog at recess might just need a supportive opportunity. The janitor, lunch lady, or bus driver might have some wise advice. Even the cool kid might have an insecurity she s sensitive about. We must be careful to avoid categorizing people just because of one characteristic. Everyone deserves a chance to be more than we expect. The monthly memory verse is: Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves. Romans 2:0, NIrV When we give people a chance, we show them that their ideas, feelings, and abilities are valuable. We give them honor by recognizing the contributions they can make in our lives. 3

October 203 K min Note! This version of the curriculum is designed especially for churches with fewer leaders and kids. You may want to use it if you have just one or two leaders and if you combine all your kids in both Large and Small Group time. GETTING READY : FOCUS THE ENERGY (Choose one or both of these activities.) Early Arriver An offering container Markers Large piece of butcher paper (at least the size of an adult) Hangman Dry erase board, poster board or chalkboard Dry erase markers, markers or chalk : ENGAGE THE HEART Engage children s hearts in a Large Group setting through interactive worship, prayer, and an innovative telling of today s Bible story. CREATE THIS MONTH S ENVIRONMENT: ROAD TO GLORY This month has a sports theme, but with a twist. Since the Assistant isn t very good at any one sport, he s decided to make up his own brand-new combination sport, so he can play the game with honor and be on the Road to Glory. The sport itself will depend on whatever equipment you can find, so plan to decorate using a random arrangement of assorted sports equipment (the more random, the better). Set your stage for the Basket-Half-Pipe-Capture-the-Whiffle-Pong game. This can be anything you can find around the church or borrow. Just set up a series of challenges that move the player from one side of the stage to the other. Finish off the obstacle course by challenging the player to put something through a hoop. You can borrow a Little Tykes basketball hoop or put a Nerf basketball hoop on a trashcan or even just use a plain old trash can. If you have any extra sports equipment, jerseys, pennants or posters you can place those on your stage or hang up on the walls. Here are a few other simple ideas for your obstacle course: Spin around a baseball bat 0 times with your nose touching the end of the bat. Jump up and down several times on an exercise step. Do 25 jumping jacks on a small workout trampoline. Set up soccer cones that the player has to run around or jump over. Crawl through a kid s play tunnel. Slide down a plastic toddler slide. Let your imagination run wild and make it over-the-top. 5

October 203 K min To take it up a notch: invite your kids, Small Group Leaders and your Assistant to wear t-shirts of their favorite sports team each week. They ll have a blast playing and laughing! Widget*: Place of Honor * widg et wij-it] noun. Something unspecific whose name is either forgotten or not known. 2. A device that is very useful for a particular job Origin: ; perhaps an alternative form of gadget Give someone the best seat at the table with this month s widget: the PLACE OF. This spiffy placemat can be used to honor a different member of the family each week for the unique qualities and actions that make them valuable! Find it in the Orange Store! Search Place of Honor to order.. OPENER/CLOSER What You Need: Assistant An assortment of random sports equipment for the Assistant to wear (sweatbands, catcher s mask, basketball jersey, shin guards, etc., whatever you have) Headband (You ll use this again in Week 2.) An assortment of sports equipment for the course (whatever you have) make sure it ends with some sort of basketball hoop Honor Box a decorated box with an opening where you can put notes (You ll need this all month long.) Music and Sound Effects (SFX): Upbeat music to use as kids enter and exit the room Stadium applause or cue kids to help you clap enthusiastically Large Group Visuals (downloadable from the website): Honor Slide Bottom Line Slide What You Do: Download the slides and have them ready to use. If you do not have CG capabilities, you have Orange s permission to enlarge and print the slides on paper. 6

October 203 K min Plan ahead for what you want your sports equipment course to look like. It can (and should) be totally random and silly, but think through what would be the funniest way to use the equipment you have. The only caveat is that the course should end in a basketball hoop. Preset the sports equipment for your Basket-Half-Pipe-Capture-the-Wiffle-Pong game during the Opener. Ask parents or Small Group Leaders to send you notes or s about times that their kids showed honor to someone else; we ll be using these notes in future weeks. Place the Honor Box somewhere in the Large Group room where it will be accessible to Small Group Leaders but within reasonable reach of the Assistant when he does his Closer. Make sure all SGLs know about the Honor Box and where it is located. Parents can turn notes in to the SGLs when they drop kids off, and SGLs can place the notes in the Honor Box before Large Group begins. 2. BIBLE STORY What You Need: Leader Bible pre-marked with the passages to be read in the Bible story Collect the following props and preset them onstage o Paper or Plastic Crown o A large sign the reads Eliab: Son # o A large sign that reads Son #2 o A large sign that reads Son #3, #4, #5 and #6 o Shepherd s crook o Chair Music and Sound Effects (SFX): Stadium Applause (same as used in Opener) or cue kids to help you clap Large Group Visuals (downloadable from the website): Big Story Timeline Bottom Line Slide What You Do: Download the slides and have them ready to use. If you do not have CG capabilities, you have Orange s permission to enlarge and print the slides on paper. Note: We provide standard and widescreen image sizes if you choose to display the Big Story Timeline on your screens. If you prefer to have a printed version, head to com, click Orange Store, and search Big Story Timeline to order a high-quality poster. 7

October 203 K min 3. WORSHIP What You Need: Leader(s) Music and Sound Effects (SFX): We Will Dance from Zapped* Glory to God Forever from Jump* *Live lyrics video available from What You Do: Download all songs (available on AmberSkyRecords.com) and have them ready to use. Download and print this week s tech sheet for everyone helping with Large Group. 4. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES GET REEL: This month with Get Reel 2.0, create an environment that helps kids get on the Road to Glory so they can play the game with honor. This week, we recommend playing the Discovery video to inspire the key faith skill of Navigate the Bible. Our Assistant literally jumps into the Bible to help us discover how God wants us to be courageous. Also on Get Reel 2.0, you can enhance your environment with an M.C. Haggis video. M.C. Haggis and his sidekick Shamus McFamus tell us all about this month s widget. FEATURE PRESENTATION: We know that sometimes you want to mix things up to keep kids engaged with the most important thing you do every week in your Large Group: tell the Bible story. You also like having a back-up plan in case your Assistant or Leader cancels at the last minute. This is why our Large Group script is interchangeable with the Feature Presentation DVDs so you can plug and play the way you need to each week. Similar to the flow we create with our Large Group script, Feature Presentation also has weekly Intro and Outro videos with a Assistant. The Intros set up the Bible story and Life App, while the Outros smoothly transition from Large Group to Small Group. For the K-5 age group, we recommend playing 252 Story, which brings you the Bible story in a simple and direct way through a professional leader accompanied by illustrations. 8

October 203 K min BIBLE STORY: HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT Samuel 6:-3; 7:-58 BOTTOM LINE: Honor others by giving them a chance. MEMORY VERSE: Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves. Romans 2:0 NIrV BASIC TRUTH: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. : FOCUS THE ENERGY Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to give the kids courage and compassion to see the potential in other people. Pray they will realize every person they come in contact with is valuable to God. Ask God to use other people to help the kids grow.. EARLY ARRIVER IDEA What You Need: An offering container, large piece of butcher paper, markers What You Do: As students come in, have them work together to trace the outline on the piece of butcher paper of the largest giant they can imagine. When the outline is complete, allow students to fill in features such as eyes, nose, mouth, clothes, fingers and toes. Note: You ll use this outline in an activity during Catch On. What You Say: Finish this sentence: I can t wait to be bigger so I can. What are some ways you feel overlooked just because you are small? Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Personalize a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another TO ADAPT FOR OLDER KIDS: Lay down on the butcher paper and let one of the kids trace YOUR outline! And instead of the sentence above, have your kids finish the following sentence I can t wait to get older so I can. What are some ways you feel overlooked just because you re not old enough yet? 0

October 203 K min 2. HANGMAN What You Need: Dry erase board, poster board or chalkboard; dry erase markers, markers or chalk What You Do: Have students sit in a semi-circle and ask if anyone knows the new Life App for the month. If the Life App is not posted anywhere or your group does not know we are going to be talking about Honor for the rest of the month, begin a game of hangman on your board with five blanks for the word Honor. If your group already knows they will be learning about Honor, play a game of hangman with the Life App definition by leaving letter blanks for the words someone, see, and valuable. Once you have discovered the Life App and discussed the definition together, continue playing hangman with words that have to do with honor. Explain that different holidays are meant to honor people (i.e., Mother s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President s Day, Veteran s Day, etc.). You can also play with ways you honor people like with a medal, award or trophy. When you have played a few rounds and have had the opportunity to really talk about what it means to honor someone, ask each kid in your group to share a story about a time they honored someone. You may begin by telling a story about a time you planned something really great for Mother s Day, a friend s birthday or attended an award ceremony or graduation to celebrate someone special. (Note: Pay attention to these stories so you can write the examples from your kids down and submit them to the Honor Box!) TO ADAPT FOR YOUNGER KIDS: Do your best to hide the LIFE APP from the younger kids in your environment or at least try not to make it obvious. Play hangman to discover the word honor. Then share the definition with the kids and talk about what it means to show honor to others. If you have more time, you can do other simple and related words like, love and see. What You Say: But you know what? It doesn t have to be a holiday or big, special event to show someone honor. We can honor people every single day. Let s head to Large Group and hear about how God saw the value in a kid named David and gave him the chance to do something great. Lead your group to the Large Group area.

: ENGAGE THE HEART Engage children s hearts in a large group setting through interactive worship, prayer, and an innovative re-telling of today s Bible story. SFX: Play high-energy music as kids enter. Stage is preset with the equipment needed for Basket-Half- Pipe-Capture-the-Wiffle-Pong. Assistant enters, wearing an assortment of random sports equipment. He should be wearing the headband for sure it will come into play in Week 2. He s doing some lunges and stretches while the kids enter. Assistant: Make sure you take off the mask/helmet when you start into the script. OPENER ASSISTANT: (Stretching.) YES! I m feelin it! Feelin the burn! And I m so glad you guys are here today for what might be the most intense and amazing hour of your LIVES! SFX: Stadium applause Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Personalize a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another This month is going to be huge. You know why? Because we re talking about! And honor means letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. CG: Honor Slide Honor means seeing everyone as God sees them, showing love to each other, putting others ahead of yourself! Now, I m about to honor YOU guys, and let you know I see how valuable YOU are. You see, I ve invented an amazing new sport. And because you guys are so super-awesome, YOU are going to be the FIRST people on the planet to experience it! You see? Honor! But first, I need to see what kind of sports YOU like. How about you? What s your favorite sport? 2

October 203 K min Call on two or three kids and react to their favorite sport. ( Yeah, me too! I love basketball! ) Cool. Yeah, I know! Sports are awesome. I love em all. And my friends are the same way. [Friend s name] is all about college football. [Friend s name] is into baseball. And [friend s name] plays soccer on the weekends. Assistant: [Personalize] these with your real-life friends and the sports they like. Ideally, these should match up with the gear you re wearing. Now you may be wondering about all of this sports equipment on stage here. Well, see I love ALL of the sports my friends play. But I m not very good at most of them. So I decided to make up my OWN sport one that has never been seen before on planet Earth. It may just change your life. I call it Basket-Half-Pipe-Capture-the-Wiffle-Pong. (Adjust this depending on what sports equipment you have.) SFX: Stadium applause or cue kids to clap wildly Yes! I m glad you re excited! Basket-Half-Pipe-Capture-the-Wiffle-Pong! You see, I figure if I make up my own sport, then I m destined for greatness. I m on the Road to Glory! I will play the game with honor. I WILL be the champion! SFX: Stadium applause or cue kids to clap wildly So here s how this game is going to work: Demonstrate the steps while you describe them. (You ll need to adjust the following dialogue for your own equipment just make sure that you end with some sort of basketball hoop.) Step : I start here by dribbling the ball between my legs. Step 2: I throw it in the air, spin in a circle, and catch it behind the back with my baseball glove. Step 3: I lay down a righteous beat with my Ping-Pong paddles. Step 4: I throw myself an alley-oop, catch it, and dunk (Hesitating, realizing he can t do this without a partner.) Uh, right. Um. Maybe this isn t going to be so easy by myself. You know what? I need a teammate to throw me an alley-oop! I need help! And I am going to honor (Looking around, choosing a kid.) YOU, and give you a chance to be part of my amazing game. (To kid.) Dude, are you ready for this? Are you ready to play the game with honor? Well, then let s do this! 3

October 203 K min Assistant does each step of the game, narrating as he does it. For the last step, he gives the ball to the SGL and has the SGL throw him an alley-oop pass. He catches it and dunks it, then acts like he s won the NBA Finals. YEAAHHHHH! Make some noise! (To crowd.) YOU are amazing! (To SGL.) YOU are amazing! I honor your amazingness! Assistant high-fives a bunch of kids while the music ends. And now it s time to honor the One who really deserves ALL our praise. You guys get up on your feet, cause we re going to sing to our awesome God! Leader enters; Assistant exits. WORSHIP LEADER: Yes, that s right! It IS time to sing to our awesome God! Are you ready to sing and dance with us as we honor the very best and greatest of all? (Get a reaction.) Yes, our God is awesome so let s sing and celebrate Him now. SFX: We Will Dance / track 2 from Zapped LEADER: There is no one like our God. To give glory to someone simply means to honor them and give them what is rightfully theirs. Revelation 4: says: You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. (NIV) Our God is worthy of all gory and honor so let s sing to Him now. This is an easy worship song that says (singing), Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God forever! Sing along. SFX: Glory to God Forever / track 6 from Jump! SETTING UP THE STORY LEADER: I LOVE worshipping with you guys! And now, I ve got an awesome TRUE story to tell you today. It comes from the LOST TRIBES section of our Big Story Timeline. CG: Big Story Timeline You see (point to spot on the Big Story Timeline), God promised to show those who were LOST that He would always love them. God wanted everyone to know He was the only way the world could be rescued! 4

October 203 K min These lost people we re talking about are God s people, the Israelites. Time and time again, God rescued His people. But instead of thanking God for rescuing them, they forgot all about Him and decided to do their own thing. Not a very wise choice. God sent several judges to lead them, but eventually, they decided they wanted their own king like all the other countries around them. They didn t trust GOD to take care of them and protect them from their enemies. KING SAUL IS A FAILURE LEADER: So God gave the Israelites a king a king named Saul. Put the crown on your head. And guess what? Things didn t go so well. Sure, Saul was tall and handsome. He seemed like a great king on the outside. And after all, God had chosen him as the king. But Saul didn t always listen to God. And so Samuel, a prophet who spoke for God, came to Saul and told him Take off the crown. LEADER: (Speaking with an authoritative accent) You haven t obeyed God. So, now your kingdom won t last! LEADER: (Back to normal voice) And it was true. Even while Saul was still king, God spoke to Samuel. He said Open the Bible to Samuel 6:-2 and read. I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king. But Samuel said, How can I go? King Saul will hear about it. Then he ll kill me. (NIrV) God gave Samuel some ideas on how he could talk to Jesse without getting into any trouble. CHOOSING DAVID LEADER: So, in Bethlehem, Samuel waited for Jesse s family to arrive. And when they got there, Samuel saw Jesse s oldest son, Eliab (ee-lai-ab). Hold up the Eliab sign. And Samuel thought, Surely this is the guy! Eliab was tall and handsome. He definitely LOOKED like a king. But listen to what God said directly to Samuel Open the Bible to Samuel 6:7 and read. 5

October 203 K min Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen him. I do not look at the things people look at. Man looks at how someone appears on the outside. But I look at what is in the heart. (NIrV) Throw the sign behind you. And so Jesse brought his other six sons and paraded them all in front of Samuel, too. Hold up the Son #2 sign in one hand. Then the signs that read Son s #3, #4, #5, #6 in the other hand. LEADER: Whoa. That s a lot of sons. Surely one of them should have a chance to be king, right? But God hadn t chosen any of them. What was it God said? Man looks at how someone appears on the outside. But I look at what is in the heart. LEADER: So, Samuel asked Jesse, Do you have any more sons? And Jesse said, Yes just my youngest boy. He s out taking care of the sheep. And Samuel said, Send for him! Hold up the shepherd s crook. LEADER: The youngest boy was David. And when David arrived, he was a handsome young guy but he was kind of sunburned and he probably smelled like sheep. His dad hadn t even considered him because he was the youngest in the family! But even though he didn t look or smell like a king, he was the one God had chosen. Because God looks at the heart! DAVID & GOLIATH LEADER: But for a while, nothing seemed to change. Saul was still king and David was still stuck with the sheep. Put away the shepherd s crook. One day, the Philistines gathered to fight against King Saul and the Israelites including David s brothers. And the Philistines sent out a mighty warrior who you might have heard of before GOLIATH! Listen Goliath was NINE feet tall. Can we just stop there for a second? Nine feet tall! That s taller than the tallest man you ve ever seen. That s like, having three of you stand on each other s shoulders. He was an actual giant! If you imagine a guy like that, with heavy armor and a javelin, staring you down trust me, it was a terrifying sight! And he yelled Climb up on the chair. 6

October 203 K min LEADER: (Yelling) I dare you to send out a man to fight me! If you kill me, we ll be your slaves. But if I kill your man, you will be OUR slaves! Ha ha ha ha. Come down off the chair. LEADER: Goliath shouted his dare every morning and evening for forty days! And King Saul and the Israelites were way too scared to do anything about it. One day, David arrived to see his brothers and bring them some food. He saw Goliath yelling, and something rose up inside his heart the heart of the future king! He said, Who does this guy think he is, challenging God s army? Someone s got to do something about this! He made so much commotion that King Saul sent for him. LEADER: David told King Saul, Don t lose hope because of that Philistine. I ll fight him! Saul told David that he was way too young but David said, I ve killed a lion and a bear to save my father s sheep. God saved me then, and God will save me when I fight Goliath! Saul offered David his own armor and sword. But David said, No thanks. I ve got my own weapons. And he went down to the stream and chose five smooth stones. Use fingers of one hand to count up high to 5. WRAPPING UP THE STORY LEADER: David was ready. The boy no one had even considered was about to do something NO ONE else had the guts to do. He grabbed his slingshot and marched out into the valley, straight toward that giant. Listen to what David said to Goliath Open the Bible to Samuel 7:45-46 and read. You are coming to fight against me with a sword, a spear and a javelin. But I m coming against you in the name of the LORD who rules over all. He is the God of the armies of Israel. He s the one you have dared to fight against. This very day the LORD will hand you over to me. I ll strike you down Then the whole world will know there is a God in Israel. (NIrV) As Goliath raced forward to attack, David ran to meet him! He placed a stone into his slingshot and whipped it around in the air. The stone flew from the sling and hit Goliath on the forehead. He fell down dead with his face to the ground. 7

October 203 K min David had won the battle for the Israelites! Turn hand into a fist, pump into the air, then point up to God. SFX: Stadium Applause or cue kids to help clap LEADER: MAN! That story is intense! Sure the David and Goliath part was great, but you know what s really cool? I love how we can look back and see how God had been working in David s life all along the way. God wanted a king who was a man after His own heart. God had seen David s true value and gave him a chance right from the beginning. And since David knew how God felt about him, he could show courage on the battlefield. It s what helped him trust God and to take down a GIANT to save God s people. God can use anyone. So, we need to honor everyone! We need to give others a chance like God did with David. We shouldn t look at what s on the outside. We need to honor others by giving them a chance. CG: Bottom Line Slide Let s pray and ask God to help us do that. PRAY LEADER: God, it is so great to know that You don t look at what s on the outside, but You look at the heart! Thanks for knowing each one of us inside and out the good stuff and the bad stuff the things we get excited about the things that scare us the things we care about the most. We want to be like David. We want to have a heart that cares about YOU most of all. Thanks for giving David a chance to do such amazing things for You. Please help us remember to honor other people, too, and give THEM a chance just like You did with David. We ask these things in Jesus name, amen. Leader exits. Assistant enters. CLOSER ASSISTANT: Man! I love that story! I think I can relate to David, because sometimes I feel like other people don t give me a chance or don t take me seriously. But I m like, I can do it! Really! (Pause.) I bet you guys feel that way sometimes too. Am I right? Yeah I thought so. 8

October 203 K min But this is what s so cool about God! I mean, in our story, David was the LEAST likely person to defeat Goliath. First of all, when Samuel came to choose a king, Jesse didn t think David was king material he didn t even bother to bring him in at first! And Samuel only honored David as the future king after God had made it really clear to him. And then King Saul thought David was too young to take on Goliath. David didn t really look like a king or a giant-killer. But God LOVES underdogs! And God looked at what was inside David s heart and knew that David was the right guy for the job. No one but God thought that David was worthy enough to accomplish what God had put before him! God gave David a chance. He ED David. He saw how valuable David really was on the inside. And that s what we should do for other people. We should treat others the way we want to be treated the way God treats US! We should show others that we see them the way God sees them. If we really love God and love others, then we ll want to them and make them feel important. For example, maybe you aren t choosing the next king of your school, but I bet you get to choose someone for your team in kickball. It s always tempting to pick the kid everyone likes. Or the kid who can kick the ball over the fence. But what if right at the start you pick the kid who always gets chosen last? You might change the way people think about that person. Maybe you ll even get a new friend out of it. I bet you can think of someone at school or in your neighborhood who could really use a friend someone to make him feel important. Or what about the lunch lady everyone makes fun of because she has to wear a funny net on her hair? Instead of laughing too, what if you smile and thank her for serving you those tasty tater tots? Give her a chance to smile back. Show her she s valuable, even if no one else sees it. We need to honor other people, because otherwise we think only about ourselves and want other people to show more honor to us. We forget to honor God. And the people around us might not know how much God really values them. So, this is the most important thing for us to remember today: Honor others by giving them a chance. CG: Bottom Line Slide When I see you next week, I want to hear all kinds of awesome stories of how you guys honored others and gave them a chance. But YOU can t tell me, or else you ll be trying to get all the honor for yourselves. HA! So we re going to see if your parents or your Small Group Leaders will brag on you and tell us all about it. I ll put all your examples here in my Honor Box (hold up Honor Box) and read one of them each week. It s going to be great! Now, you guys are going to head to Small Group and talk about ways you can honor others by giving them a chance. Have fun! Dismiss children to their Small Groups. SFX: Play high-energy music as the kids exit. 9

October 203 K min : MAKE THE CONNECTION Make the connection on how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. *. DAVID AND THE GIANT (MARSHMALLOWS) (review the Bible story / great for active learners) What You Need: Giant outline, marshmallows, tape, thick red marker, Review Questions (Activity Page) What You Do: Tape your giant to one wall of your room. Make sure the giant s feet are fairly close to the ground. Using the thick red marker, divide the giant into three sections: One small section from the top of the head to the shoulders, one section a little bigger than the first from the shoulders to the belly button, and a third section which is the biggest from the belly button to the toes. Write the number 0 in the first section, 5 in the second section, and 3 in the third section. These sections will determine the number of points given for each correct answer: 0 points for anything inside the first section, and so on. Mark a line about ten feet from the wall with tape. (You may bring the line a couple of feet closer or further if ten feet seems too far/close for your kids. Place it far enough away so it s a challenge for your age group of kids. Also, if you can t put tape on the wall, just put it on floor far away from kids.) Divide your group into two teams. Have one student from each team toss a marshmallow at the giant from behind the tapeline. The team to get closest to the middle of the 0-point section gets to go first. One person from that team stands at the tapeline and tosses a giant marshmallow at the giant. If the marshmallow hits outside the piece of paper (on the wall or floor), that team loses the chance to answer a question. If the marshmallow lands within one of the three sections, the team gets the chance to answer a review question for the corresponding number of points. If the question is answered correctly, the team is awarded the number of points that corresponds with the section of the giant they hit with their marshmallow. If the question is answered incorrectly, it is left to be answered in another round. Stand close to the giant to best judge where the marshmallow hits. Keep score on a piece of paper, phone, or in your head. Continue playing until all questions have been answered correctly. Have kids help pick up the marshmallows (and put them in the trash!) before sitting together in a circle to discuss. If you provided an extra bag of marshmallows for kids to have as a treat, let them eat them while you unpack the object of the activity. Note: Before handing out the marshmallows to eat, ensure that you don t have any kids who are allergic. Also, if you have a small number of children in your group today, you may want to combine with another group to play this game. TO ADAPT FOR OLDER KIDS: Select one child to be scorekeeper, give him a piece of paper to tally points as they are awarded, to declare a winner. Select another child in the group to stand near the giant sketch to best judge where the marshmallow hits. 20

October 203 K min What You Say: Wow! You guys did a great job. Our giant didn t stand a chance against you and your giant marshmallows! Just like David was given a chance to make a difference at a young age, you guys can show others around you the same honor by giving them a chance to be on your sports team, a chance to work with you on a school project, or a chance to help you beat your favorite video game! Remember, when you give someone a chance who might otherwise be overlooked, you are showing how valuable you think they are. So this week, remember to honor others by giving them a chance. 2. MUSICAL CHAIRS (application activity / great for active learners) What You Need: Chairs (one less than the number of kids in your group) or pieces of construction paper, music NOTE: If your small groups sit around rugs on the floor, use construction paper to serve as spots instead of chairs (just make sure to use one less than the number of kids in your group). What You Do: To begin, play the game the traditional way. Place chairs in a circle, facing out instead of in. Have students walk slowly around the chairs as the music plays. Stop the music after a few seconds. As soon as the music stops, students must find a chair. The student left without a chair is out. Take away one chair and continue rounds until there is one winner. After you have played this way once or twice, change the rules around so that everyone has a chance to play the entire game. Keep the chairs the same, starting with one less and removing one chair per round but allow all students to stay in the game. The new challenge is for the group to work together to think of a way for everyone to sit on a chair when the music stops. What You Say: Which way did you like playing best? Was it more fun to sit on the sidelines once you were out or to get to play the whole game together? (Pause for answers.) Have you ever had to sit by yourself on the sidelines while other kids played? How did it make you feel? (Listen to their replies.) Honoring someone is all about showing that person how valuable they are. But when you are left out, it doesn t make you feel very valuable. What are some other games you could adapt to include everyone? What are some other ways you could give others a chance and make everyone feel valuable? (Take a minute to discuss.) Those are some great ideas! There are many ways to show honor but one really great way is to honor others by giving them a chance. Optional 5th Grade Discussion Questions If you lead fifth graders, consider asking these discussion questions: Describe what it feels like to be overlooked or not given a chance. We all know what it feels like to be left out or made to feel unimportant. It s pretty awful. So why do we sometimes treat others that way? 2

October 203 K min What are some ways you can lift others up and make them feel important? You worked together to lift up the yardstick in our activity. How can you work together with your friends to show honor to people who are usually overlooked? * 3. YARN MATCH (memory verse activity) What You Need: Bibles, 9-foot length of yarn, ball of yarn, scissors What You Do: Ask kids to open their Bibles to Romans 2:0. Help any who are not familiar with locating books and chapters in the Bible. (See the tips below.) Finding verses with kindergartners: Guide children to open the Bibles to the marked page. Point to the word Romans at the top of the page as you say Romans aloud. Then guide children to find the big number 2 on the page. Explain that this is the chapter number. Finally, guide them to look under the big 2 for the little 0; this is the verse number. Tell them to leave their finger on the verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the verse together. Finding verses with st graders: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents. (Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of contents, lead them to find Romans in the list under New Testament. You can help by telling them that Romans starts with the letters R-O-M. When the kids find Romans, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the number tells them on what page they can find Romans. Help the kids find the page. When they find Romans, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help them find chapter 2. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Help them find verse 0 in chapter 2. Tell them to leave their finger on the verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the verse together. Finding verses with 2nd and 3rd graders: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents. (Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of contents, lead them to find Romans in the list under New Testament. Finding verses with 4th-5th graders: Our verse is from Romans. Ask kids to tell you whether that s in the Old Testament or the New Testament. (New) So we know it s toward the back of the Bible. It s after the first of the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and the book of Acts. When they find Romans, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Tell them to find chapter 2. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Tell them to them find verse 0 in chapter 2. 22

October 203 K min Say the verse together to help kids begin memorizing it. Share an example of someone you know who lives out Romans 2:0. How does that person treat others? How does he or she honor others? Ask kids to share examples of people they know or have read about who follow Romans 2:0 in the way they honor others. Ask them to give examples of how Jesus honors each of us. What has He done to show us how important and valuable we are? How can we follow His example? Hold up the length of yarn you ve cut. (Consider using it to illustrate that Goliath, in today s Bible story, was over nine feet tall.) Set the yarn piece aside or put it in your pocket. Pass a ball of yarn or string and ask kids to cut off a piece they believe to be exactly the same length as yours. When everyone is done, let kids take turns comparing their yarn pieces to the original to see how close they came. What You Say: It wasn t easy to perfectly match your lengths of yarn to mine, but some of you came very close. When it comes to loving others deeply and showing them honor, we have a perfect example in Jesus. He showed other people how valuable they really were by spending time with them. He ate with people who usually ate alone. He served people who usually got ignored. He paid attention to those who normally didn t get a lot of attention. If Jesus thought it was important to love everyone, then we should, too. How close can you come this week to matching His example? Here s where to start: honor others by giving them a chance. When you do, you ll be showing them God s love. ALTERNATE ACTIVITY FOR YOUNGER KIDS STICKER PRICE (memory verse activity / great for active learners) What You Need: Bibles, dot stickers or small Post-it notes, Shout Out Loud (this month s song) and a way to play it What You Do: Guide each child to find a partner. Tell the kids they are going to play a wacky game where each child will try to honor her partner more than herself. Give each child a sheet of star stickers. These are stars of honor. When you play this month s theme song, the kids will race to stick all their stars to their partners. When their sticker sheet is empty, they will race to take stars off themselves and onto their partners. It will be a mad dash of kids trying to out- unstick themselves and out- stick their partners! Time ends when you stop the music. Congratulate the teams for wanting to honor their partners more than themselves! NOTE: Be sure every sticker or Post-it gets recycled or thrown away before the children leave: no sticker residue = happy parents and a happy custodian! What You Say: Romans 2:0 tells us to Honor others more than yourselves. What do you think it means to Honor others more than yourselves? (Pause.) Yes! God wants us to think about how we can show others they are valuable instead of first thinking about ourselves. Why do you think God wants us to honor others? (He loves them; He wants us to honor them so they know how valuable they are to Him; God wants us to honor them so they can know that He loves 23

October 203 K min them, etc.) God wants everyone to know that He LOVES them. He wants everyone to know how special and how valuable they are to Him. One way people can know God s love and know how valuable they are to God is for us to show them honor. When we honor others, we show them that we see them as God sees them, and that s a GREAT thing! So this week, honor others by giving them a chance. PRAY AND DISMISS What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Take a minute to talk about how cool it is that we get to talk to God anytime, anywhere, about anything! Ask the kids who usually prays at their house before meals or during family devotional time, if they have one. Is it usually an adult? Have they ever been given the chance to pray? How does it feel to be given the chance to pray? Are they scared or proud? Explain that it can be intimidating to pray out loud in front of others but prayer doesn t have to be full of big words or even make sense to anyone else but you because God knows what you mean! He hears and loves the prayer of a grown up just as much as the prayer of a Kindergartener or 5th grader! Ask your students if anyone wants to pray for the group. Give everyone a chance to pray out loud. TO ADAPT FOR OLDER KIDS: Use the same language as above, but let them pair up to pray out loud for each other. What You Say: Praying is a great habit to get into. Whether you are alone or in a big group, old or young, bold or shy, you always have the chance to pray to God. Dear God, thank You so much for the story of David as a young boy. Help this story encourage these kids to remember how great it feels when someone trusts in them enough to give them the chance to do something big. Help them to honor others in their lives in the same way by giving someone else a chance to do something cool. We love You! In Jesus name, amen. Give each child a GodTime card. Pass out Parent CUE cards as adults arrive for pick-up. 24
