Host exits. Historyteller enters, bringing out the easels and sets them in the middle of the stage. SETTING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: Today I want to tell you about a guy named Timothy. (Hold up Bible.) Timothy was a leader in the early days of the church after Jesus died, came back to life, and went to heaven to be with God. The interesting thing about Timothy is that he was young at the time. Still, he was one of the strongest teachers and leaders in the early church. He was also one of Paul's closest friends. Paul even wrote a letter from prison saying that Timothy was like a son to him. Paul trusted Timothy so much so that he left him in charge of the church at Ephesus, even though Timothy was very young to have such an important job. But Paul knew that Timothy didn't need to wait until he was older to make a difference. Listen to the words Paul wrote to Timothy to encourage him. Open the Bible to 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIrV) and read. Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live. Also set an example in how you love and in what you believe. Show the believers how to be pure. How did Paul know that he could leave such a young guy with such a tough job? Let s look a little bit deeper into Timothy s life to find out. RELATABLE HISTORYTELLER: Timothy grew up in a small town called Lystra. His mother, Eunice, was Jewish, and she taught him the scriptures. Place Bible Story Image One (child Timothy and his parents) on the easel or chair back. But Timothy s father was a Greek man, which means he probably believed and cared about different things. It s very likely that Timothy might have grown up feeling awkward or out of place since he didn't quite fit in with the Jews or the Greeks in his town. REAL HISTORYTELLER: When Timothy was a teenager, the Apostle Paul and his friend Barnabas arrived in Lystra. They brought something new the gospel, the good news that Jesus, the Savior, had come! Place Bible Story Image Two (teenage Timothy with his mother and grandmother watching Paul speak) on the second easel or chair back. Paul didn t just have words to share; he also healed a man who couldn't walk. The crowds who gathered to hear Paul and Barnabas preach were so amazed that they wanted to WORSHIP the two men, but Paul told them to turn to God. Listen to what he said. 6
Open the Bible to Acts 14:15 (NIrV) and read. Friends, why are you doing this? We are only human, just like you. We are bringing you good news. Turn away from these worthless things. Turn to the living God. He is the one who made the heavens and the earth and the sea. He made everything in them. Timothy and his mother, as well as his grandmother Lois, heard Paul s teachings. They believed what Paul was saying about Jesus. The scriptures they had grown up with had promised that one day a Savior would come. Now they believed Jesus was that Savior! They decided to follow Jesus too. RIGHTEOUS HISTORYTELLER: Even after Paul and Barnabas were chased out of town for talking about Jesus, Timothy, his mom, and his grandma continued to meet with the brand-new church in Lystra. Timothy continued to grow in confidence, and he tried to reflect Jesus in what he said and did. When Paul returned to Lystra years later, the other believers pointed out Timothy. They told Paul how Timothy was living a life that honored God. Place Bible Story Image Three ( young man Timothy praying while other believers are pointing to him) on the third easel or chair back. Paul was so impressed by what he heard about Timothy that he invited Timothy to join him on his journey and share the news about Jesus. Before Timothy left with Paul, the other believers surrounded him and prayed for him. Over the following years, Timothy continued to travel with Paul, sharing the good news about Jesus in every city and town they visited. Paul trusted Timothy so much that he sent him to towns where the church was in trouble so Timothy could help lead the church in following Jesus. WRAPPING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: Later, Paul sent Timothy to take charge of the church in Ephesus. It was a tough job, but Timothy knew the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. Paul knew that God had made Timothy unique for a reason. God could use everything in Timothy s life all of Timothy s individuality to bring more people to Him. Let s think about all of the things that made Timothy unique. (Stand by the first picture.) Timothy was born to a Jewish mom and a Greek father. That means that a lot of people could relate to him both Jewish and Greek people. He could understand where others were coming from. (Flip the picture over.) That made Timothy RELATABLE. (Move to the second picture.) Also, Timothy grew up reading the scriptures, so he knew a lot about God. When Paul came and shared the news about Jesus and performed miracles in His name Timothy knew he could trust Jesus too. (Flip the picture over.) That made Timothy s faith REAL. (Move to the third picture.) Lastly, Timothy lived his life in a way that reflected Jesus. He [Basic Truth] made wise choices and [Basic Truth] treated others the way he wanted to be treated. He followed 7
God with His whole life so much that other believers pointed him out to Paul as a leader. (Flip the picture over.) Timothy lived a RIGHTEOUS life, or a life that followed after God. Everything in Timothy s life that might have made him feel different was something that God was able to use in a powerful way. Paul saw something in Timothy and gave him a chance to lead. And remember this: Timothy didn't wait until he felt old enough or confident enough to share about Jesus. He chose to let God use him to make a difference while he was young. Let s ask God to help us make a difference with the unique way He created us. CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide Pray HISTORYTELLER: Dear God, we are all so different. You ve made us all individuals with a purpose that only we can fulfill. But we know that You didn t make us different for no reason. You made us individuals so we can make a difference in the world. Help us to use the unique way You created each of us to shine Your light and show Your love to everyone around us. Help us to remember that it doesn t matter how young we are; You can use us to make a difference. We love You, and we pray these things in Jesus name, amen. If you have an offering with you today, raise your hand and we will bring the bucket over to you. Historyteller exits as Host enters. Closer HOST: If you re like most people, sometimes you might feel like you're not good enough to do big things for God. You might feel like you re too small or too young, or that you don t know enough yet to do anything really helpful. But God made you in His image! You were MADE to make a difference. Remember what Paul wrote to Timothy? Open the Bible to 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIrV) and read. Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live. Also set an example in how you love and in what you believe. Show the believers how to be pure. There s so much you can do, no matter how young you are. You can make the new kid in school feel welcome by showing him around or inviting him to sit with you at lunch. You can help around the house without your parents ever having to ask you. You can help your little brother or sister with their homework, or you can teach them how to kick the soccer ball. You can choose to say words that encourage others and make them feel good about themselves. You can think about some of the things that make you different, and think about how God might be able to use those things to make a difference in the world through you. In fact, that s a GREAT thing to talk about with a parent or Small Group Leader! CG: Bottom Line Slide 8
[Bottom Line] God made me to make a difference. Say that with me. HOST and KIDS: [Bottom Line] God made me to make a difference. HOST: (Hold up the bucket of assorted brushes.) Kind of like each different brush in this bucket was made for a specific purpose, God has a plan for your life too. He made each of us different, and those differences in each of us can help us make our own special mark on the world. We can praise Him for that. CG: Memory Verse I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14, NIV Let s get to Small Group now so we can help each other figure out how we can each make a difference! Dismiss children to their Small Groups. 10 Dare You to Move Bible: Dare You to Move (Timothy) 1 Timothy 4:12 (supporting: Acts 14 17; 1 Timothy 4:14; 1 Corinthians 4:17; 16:10) Bottom Line: God made me to make a difference. Memory Verse: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well Psalm 139:14, NIV Life App: Individuality Discovering who you are meant to be Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (10 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible Truth applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. 9:00 & 11:30 Verse Echo What You Need: Bibles What You Do: Help kids look up Psalm 139:14 in their Bibles. Use the tips in Week One if needed. Read the verse aloud several times. Guide kids to stand in a side-by-side line. (It can be the same line from previous activities if you wish.) Tell kids that you will say a few words of the verse, and you will point to someone to echo those words back to you. Say the first two words of the verse, and point to the first kid in line. Say the second two words and point to the next kid in line. Continue in this way until you ve gone through the entire verse and/or gone through the entire line. The next time through, don t point to the kids in order so they ll have to stay on their toes. The next time, point to TWO kids at a time. Continue as long as interest holds. Do it a different way each time. Finally, prompt all kids to echo back as you say long phrases of the verse. What You Say: You did such a good job echoing me. When we echo, that means we say something just like someone else said it. That s a lot like how God echoed himself when He made us. God is amazing and wonderful, and He made US amazing and wonderful. God can show compassion and self-control, and WE can show compassion and self-control. We are all SO amazing, and with our amazingness, we can make a difference in other people s lives. [Bottom Line] God made me to make a difference, and He made all of YOU to make a difference, too! 10
10:15 Can You Do It? What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Guide kids to stand in order from youngest to oldest again. Tell them to spread out a little and all face you. Explain that you will ask them to do certain motions if they can do the thing you say. Use the following ideas and/or come up with your own. Just make sure that EVERYONE in your group can do the things you say. Be sensitive to kids with special needs. o If you can walk, walk in place. o If you can run, run in place. o If you can put on your shoes, kick your foot out. o If you can brush your teeth, give me a big, cheesy smile. o If you can throw a ball, pretend to throw a ball. o If you can jump, jump three times. o If you can write your name, do a fist pump. o If you can sing the Happy Birthday song, give a thumbs up. o If you can tell someone you love them, give yourself a hug. o If you can sit down, sit down. What You Say: ALL of you could do ALL of those things, even though some of you are younger and some of you are older. There are SO many things that all of us can do, and God gave us the ability to do things so that we can make a difference in people s lives. Let s think about that. How can walking make a difference in someone else s life? (You might need to prompt them on this. You can go for a walk with your grandma so she can get some exercise. You can walk to a neighbor s house to give them some cookies.) How can writing make a difference? (You can write someone a note to tell them how much you love them. You can write a song to make someone happy.) Those are some great ideas! See? You can do lots of things to make a difference, even though you re five or six or seven years old. [Bottom Line] God made me to make a difference, and He made all of YOU to make a difference, too! All Service Times Pray and Dismiss (10 minutes) What You Need: Bible What You Do: Read Psalm 139:14 again. Tell kids that one way we can pray is to pray God s words from the Bible right back to Him. In fact, the book of Psalms is very much like a book of prayers. It s easy to pray the Psalms. Explain that you will say a sentence of a prayer from the memory verse, and kids will echo that prayer. What You Say (NIV): God, I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Pause.) Your works are wonderful. (Pause.) I know that full well. (Pause.) Amen. 11
